Santa Cruz

gotta go to crown where all my former FG hype was at. i don’t know about now, but crownftw!

good luck finding competition. nowadays, it’s not easy to get them at santa cruz.

Seriously, I would be down for some mvc2 comp when i go to visit my friends. However, I ain’t playin on d-pad, sticks all the way. I go there every other weekend or so.

Hey guys. I’ll be down at Santa Cruz this upcoming Sunday. I’m from Modesto so I’ll be rolling by on my Vacation for some competition. Where’s the competition at? I play CvS2 and 3s.

find sum of that neiman in ucsc. He will fuck your shit up with that Hugo!

contact neiman. He’s the best 3S player I know from UCSC.

and he’s known in the competitive world. i know, for fact, he’s the best 3s player in UCSC and possibly one of the best hugo players in the northern california.

blushes:smile:

I’m disappointed that some the games I’m hoping for aren’t posted. Regardless, I can’t make it anyways. But if any of you want to put up something, there are empty stations - if you plan on using an empty station, then let the people who run the tourney know beforehand. Also, parking is free on weekends (for those of you who are coming from faraway lands).

Competition is actually determining where I go for college, lol.

I’m from So.Cal and there are a lot of decent arcades here, but I got accepted to UCSC and am wondering how the games up there go for 3S?

I know there’s good stuff 'round UCR (my other option), but seriously can anyone tell me?

DO NOT base your college education around where the 3rd strike competition is. lol. and for that matter there’s only like 4-5 people in this city that actually know how to play the game well.

lolol I know, I know. I’m not dumb (dumb enough not to get in anywhere decent, but still).

Yeah, anyway- I only got two choices: UCR and UCSC. I’m hoping to transfer to somewhere prestigious like UCSD or even LA after 2 years or so, but while I’m completing my GE and shit- I’d like to have some fun.

Seriously, the only game I play consistently is 3S.

hmm…my g/f tells me that she tends to run into people who are really artsy fartsy and think their fart smells better than others just because they recycle. dunno if that helps any…

her average weekend consists of reading out in the lawn, beach, or going downtown. it’s a real college town imo so, not too much to do there if you are looking for fun but at least santa cruz has an amazing view.

well if you do go to ucsc you are about a half-hour or so from Keystone II which is hell of a good place for comp. next close watering hole for some good 3s comp is the Rack-n-cue at SF state but, travel there and back my be a little long… not sure how long it would take.

all in all. i think you will have with the college life whichever college you choose. dorming imo is like living on your own in an apartment where all your neighbors is around the same age and some of them was sheltered in highschool so, they go crazy since it is the first taste of freedom they’ve had(i.e. getting retardedly drunk).

p.s. they also have the naked run which is a sight to be seen…

Well, it’s imperative that you run into the, so-called, artsy fartsy people when you live in Porter or Oaks. Basically, there’s 10 different colleges you can affiliate yourself in and choose accordingly - each college has it’s designated theme (being a former Crownie - many of my hallmates were science majors).

UC Santa Cruz has been voted, by Princeton Review, to be the #1 beautiful campus in the nation. You can tree climb, go caving, ocean kayaking, surfing, you name it! Whatever unique outdoor sport you want to do, you can do them at santa cruz. I used to take the trails to hike to class and I liked it.

There is a downtown Santa Cruz (as well as the Boardwalk). But in comparison to LA or NY, there’s relatively little to explore. For me, it was more than enough.

And, yes, you can’t forget the famous Porter Run. People run naked across campus during the first rain of the school year.

UC Santa Cruz is, widely, known for their astronomy and biological research departments - #2 in the world. What people don’t know is that UCSC has a relatively strong soft-science dept too (especially our literature, creative writing, philosophy, music, and yes - visual arts). UCSC’s was, originally, a university for the arts - not science.

The truth is, every college is a party college (some more than others). But to say that UCSC is a big party college is like comparing apples and oranges. Besides, where there’s big party colleges, there’s also big party poopers.

Also, I was a philosophy major and stayed in Crown college designated for science majors. There certainly were a few party goers, but most of them lived off campus by the 2nd year. Frankly, I’m glad I lived in with the science guys - they got me into the FG hype. :3

It’s your decision, but if you want my humble opinion…GO TO UC SANTA CRUZ! Banana Slugs FTW! ^^

Another note: UC Santa Cruz has one of the top game design programs in the nation. You won’t be able to pass up THAT offer in any university. I WISH I could’ve stayed an extra year JUST so I could take one game design class. Whether or not you want to be a game programmer, it’s an amazing experience (or so I’ve been told).

Another note: Since UCSC is near the ocean, you won’t get massive heat waves. Think about that during your summer vacation.

Another note: I, too, knew no one when I moved to UCSC. But as long as you keep your door open (and take the initiative to know your hallmates), then you’ll be fine. If you don’t like your hallmates, then you can always get to know your classmates. Point being, it’s impossible to be outside a social network unless you, literally, box yourself in. I was fortunate to stay in the dorms for all 4 years…and I loved it.

Dang…that pretty much clinched it  Thanks Mayftw!

Going to UC Santa Cruz was one of the best four years of my life. Enjoy it thoroughly!

My personal recommendation would be for you to attend Crown College (though I know there are others who would beg to differ). Dormitories aren’t spacious, but they’re manageable. Even though you have to climb cardiac hill to get up to your dormitory, all your classes won’t be too far or too close - most of your classes will be within walking distance. Since you said that you’ll be transferring in 2 years, it’s likely that you’ll have to take the G.E. classes in lecture halls called 'Classroom Unit 1 and/or 2. Though if you do decide to take visual art courses, then it’s likely that none of your hallmates would take your same classes.

After living in Crown for four years, I did build some sexy calves. ;D

College 9/10 (college of social science) have, somewhat, newly renovated dormitories - they’re the biggest dormitories on campus (and the least shabbiest dining facility). Though Cowell apartments have the latest renovated apartments on campus.

420 @ UCSC.

That’s pretty much sums it up, except it’s relatively compressed into one zone.

420 wazzat?

an alternative title for 420 would be marijuana day

on the topic of choosing ucsc over ucr

I’d have to say that UCSC is a pretty dope school. It’s incredibly beautiful, lots of interesting people, the town is small and quaint, there are plenty of parties, danky weed, and summer/spring is gorgeous. Winter is FUCKING cold though.

lol, You shoulda’ said 4/20.

I thought it was some kinda’ arcade. Are most people into that over there? Not too into that personally, but I’ll be down for the occasional ride-around to blaze. Are the cops pretty chill over there or is it a bust?

And shit, I love cold weather. It beats a damn 90 degree winter any day. See you guys soon.

Oh, yeah- you guys know anything about the transfer program once I enroll? Like, if I wanted to go to some other school after 2 years or something?

Also, I’m a not too shabby Remy player. I used to play T5 as Lee, but I haven’t played that in like a year.

man i wanted to be at santa cruz at 4/20, unfortunately im going to be in fairfield for that weekend. ):

RANDOM THOUGHTS:
the pink man in santa cruz… has anyone tried talking to him? i always wonder how he makes a living…

i think the cafeteria food in uscs is the bomb-diggity…mcdonald tasting mcnuggets ftw

hey have any seen any cool crittters while attending ucsc? even though i only visit ucsc i managed to have a picnic by a couple of deers and chilled at a bus stop with a family of racoons…my next goal is to play soccer with a cougar

any really dope spots to hang out in santa cruz that often go overlooked?
