Santa Cruz

um last time i went there( 2 months ago) everything worked…the sticks are 8-way and feel crappy to me.

Well, I was a former UCSC student (though I graduated last summer). But I still have connection with people who are into fighting games. Also, be sure to check out the Porter Game Tournament (held in UCSC Porter College’s Dining Hall) in April to build some connections. They’ve got games ranging from SF to Beatmania to MK to CvS2 to MvC2 to Brawl to GG. Trust me, it’s an event you don’t want to miss. :]

Is this the same UCSC tournament that banned the use of 'cade sticks?

I remember there was a weekend (or more) long game tournament (at UCSC) that covered many different genres, including fighting games. One of the people running the tournament banned the use of sticks because he said they gave an unfair advantage over those who use D-Pad.

I was down in SC visiting my girlfriend at that time, remember being excited and then not so much after hearing that.

Yeah, that’s the one. But, frankly, my friend and I managed to sneak in a few sticks - we didn’t get caught. I’ve managed to compete pretty well against lots of stick players with a pad (and win). So if you want to bring a stick, then bring it when everyone becomes tired. Bring a bunch of equipment for a station and they won’t notice (and if they do, bring it anyways).

Word. If they randomly decide to run CVS2 again, I honestly can’t do A or N Groove on a pad.

San Anselmo? Who knew there were more Marin FG players?

Well, since guilty gear wasn’t there last year, my friend and i randomly decided to run it at the last minute. not only did we get to sneak our sticks in, we also got a casual session + tournament happening. Also, we had access to the big speaker so we announced it to the whole tourney!

Wait?! Since when were there FG players in Marin?! @____@ Well, I’m mostly a GG player, but I’m open to all FGs :3.

I just moved up here recently to do my grad studies, but I commute to the south bay every weekend (particularly sunnyvale and cupertino). Also, I do Costco runs every month at Novato. perhaps we can get together sometime :3

That’s bullshit, no sticks. Just tell that guy he’s wrong and you guys are going to use sticks.

What’s he going to do? Beat you up? You have a big stick and you can slap him around with it.

never been to the porter game thingy, never heard of it after 5+ years.

where my santa cruz 3s/marvel heads at? we get it poppin at stevenson college - ucsc.

fuck man. i’m never in sc anymore. what days are you guys playing on now?

does lanre still go to ucsc? i don’t know if he graduated, but he was considered to be one of the best hugo players in west coast. look him up on facebook. also, chris li was another 3s ST player, but i don’t know if he’s still there. the 3s scene in santa cruz was lacking, but there are still a few good peops around. you shouldve moved to crown buddy - that’s where all my FG hype was at.

seriously, i thought it was one of the stupidest rules ever made. how could you NOT have a stick in competitive play? regardless, we still brought them and no one seemed to care.

the porter video game tourney is doing it’s 3rd annual tournament (or was it the 5th). so if you didn’t pay attention to the bulletins on the bus stops, then you probably missed it. facebook it!

oh, and just to put this out on the table…

if any of you santa cruz folk play guilty gear and/or melty blood competitively, then i know 3 hardcore japanese players who are aching for competition. send me a message and i’ll contact them.

Ah i always love posting once in a while. I don’t really play CvS2 or 3s anymore, but i might play agian if there are people in the area willing to play. I play VF5 only nowadays. And whats this UCSC tourny all about…what day/time is it?

every year, students from UCSC host a huge video game tourney at Porter College (hence the Porter Video Game Tournament). games ranging from beatmania to guitar hero to ST to Soul Caliber to brawl to duck hunt to Halo to MK to CvS2 (list goes on and on) are held at the tournament. Each designated station holds X number of games and rotate accordingly. It’ll be held at April 19th, but there’s no details on the games that’ll be at the tournament…yet. I’ll keep you all posted for any changes. And if you’re in UCSC, be sure to check out the bus stop bulletins. People will start advertising soon!

I believe that non-UCSC students had to pay $2 and UCSC students were able to get in free. And, also, they don’t let you bring in your bags and wear cargo pants (precaution for thefts). but i wore them anyways XD. If you plan on going, be sure to bring in a lock.

Neiman seems to be aching for competition. why don’t you hit him up at stevenson college? i wouldn’t say there’s people who play competitively in santa cruz (except for a small handful), but they’re around. you just gotta find them. but if you want guilty gear competition, then i can help you with that.

There were actually a good number of us for a while. I met a majority of them at my old job.

Problem was that phone calls I made recently were never returned. Invites to Sonoma County tournaments/crew challenges were never taken. Everyone sort of just fell off and did their own thing. Mostly GGXX and Tekken players.

I think I’ll be in Santa Cruz on the weekend of the 19th, do you have an email of anyone running the tourney at UCSC. I’m always down to get random games of CVS2 in wherever I am.

HAHAHAHAHAH, lanre can’t play street fighter for shit. He’s in davis now and i’m in UCSD. Next time Kneeman

portervgt5.0@gmail.com - best means of contacting the people who run the tourney. and if you have facebook, they set up a group.

unfortunately, i work during the 19th and don’t want to splurge money on gas. i can help you get some contacts, but that’s it. as for CvS2 casuals, be sure to ask for the ‘ok’ to use their equipment. they have tourneys scheduled every hour in each station. but if you bring in your own equipment, then that’s another thing. just be sure to properly check-in and out.

thanks for the heads up. i’m reeeeeally behind on the santa cruz scene.

guess its just us Neiman haha, maybe someday Corey will play again, i know he moved in with lucien and lisa over in Aptos. He was talking about playing again, who knows. And when the hell are you ever coming back to SC David?

I still play tekken for fun. I have an HDTV+ps3+tdr and a regular tv + ps2 + ttt.

It’s quite a nice setup.
We also have a wii+ssbb.

Jesse and I want everyone to know next weekend sometime I’ll have everyone over to play tekken at least. Hopefully have some beer as well. I hope maybe jhunter and chris will come.

We’re wondering what day/time is best.

I want to play Tekken :frowning:

I’d also enjoy playing a lot of other fighting games

Anyone interested in MCP’s proposal for next weekend? I can get it organized.

Thanks, I emailed them which a bunch of questions/info.

WHAAt didnt think they were cvs2/mvc2 gamers at scsc jeez… next time i go down there i’ll post here ahead of time. i go down there once a month or so because my g/f goes there. Sterile merril ftw lol.
