San Diego Saltmines (Weekly Tournaments & Casuals)

Not as glad as I am to be moving out of Middle of Nowhere, Arkansas. Looking forward to playing with people offline again.

"However, as a beginner player myself, I know the frustration and low motivation that comes with getting your ass handed to you over and over."
There’s a place for begginers and newbies (such as myself if you look at last week’s bracket) in the SINGLE bracket that should be posted in tournament. And that’s called the bottom half of the bracket. 1st place in the beginners bracket is no where close to first place in an actual tournament. If you want other players to play nice, that’s meant for casuals. If you want players to learn and ask questions, that’s meant for casuals. If you want to introduce beginners into the scene, that’s meant for casuals. If you want

"Yes I agree its the only way to get better, but it doesn’t mean it has to be as painful as it is."
NOTE: This is coming from a shitty player that no one in the SD FGC (in general) respects my gameplay in ether SFIV or UMvC3.
Loser’s should not be rewarded for placing over a bunch of other losers. That’s just not how the learning curve works. Just because you get your ass handed to you doesn’t mean that you should feel discouraged and build that barrier higher than it should be. That barrier was built in the first place for you to blow away. I get my ass handed to me every week and I always tell myself I’m never meant to be good at anything, but then I go “fuck that” and I progress as far as I can.

"I could make a whole lot more money by just staying at home and doing work, not playing tournaments, and it is not my intention to create a tournament to supply good marvel players with a source of weekly income. My intent is to establish an event that beginners will feel welcome and inclined to goto and get better."
Money is not a “source of weekly income” for good players.
Example: The Dios X Gas Money Foundation is not the reason why Dios X plays to win first place. He plays to reassure himself that he’s one of the best and that he wants to win that badly (as seen on WNF, SoCal Regionals, and Curleh Mustache). Money symbolizes as a reward for the player’s performance within that circumstance. So a $10 payout for first place winner would be suitable for a 3 man tournament, but if you say their performance for their hard work and dedication is worth $10 for a 19 man bracket, then that’s not cool. Dios X would only win only $24 (without a prize split) a week at TTF if there were at least an 8 man tournament. If a player just happens to make a buttload of money just because he wins every single tournament, then it’s only the community’s mistake to let him even get that far. Again, I’m not a top player (or even a decent player), and I don’t see this kind of prize money ever but I get rewarded through getting higher in the brackets off of progress and that’s at least worth my $5 investment every week at the Box Arena or TTF. That’s the thing that new players should be looking forward to. Progress makes and a sense of community is what makes players happy, not just cheap sessions with no sense of worth in tourneys.

"I agree you cannot baby the scene as it stands, but if you want to introduce people INTO the scene, you’re going to have to play a little nicer with them. once they’re in, i agree, its all fair game, but thats not my aim."
Now for new players. If you really wanna find a place to play and hang out and learn how to play the game. SDFGC (along with TTF and Cosmic Odyssey both in National City) are the perfect places for you. Why? Because there’s a ton of setups that people like to bring because it is awesome to see people wanting to learn the game. Now if you wanna compete but are too intimidated by the seasoned veterans, do it anyways but don’t be discouraged. You can get salty, but don’t ever say that you can never get to their level because of school, work, family, etc. Anyone can learn and anyone can progress. And if someone doesn’t play nice with you, go off and ask questions from anybody that can help so you can learn how to fuck that guy up so he can respect you more. If you don’t know how to lose then you’re certainly never going to win.

"I look forward to seeing you all on Monday, and hopefully one day we can see eye to eye on this issue, whether it simply be an understanding of differing views, or a merging of ideologies."
You can still be a good host and I understand why you guys are doing this and I know it’s gonna take time for you guys to figure things out. But you need to understand why other people run weeklys the way they do first by actually viewing the events and not just assuming. I want people to come back to these weeklys as much as you guys do and I know why you guys are running the way you are but there’s just some things that aren’t really practical.
Don’t take my word as final and don’t take me as some spokes person for the rest of the San Diego community, but a lot of people were upset and disappointed and there’s a lot to be made up for.

The scene won’t grow through your event if you don’t grow into the scene.
Sorry for the harshness but I tried to make it polite as I can.

Your words don’t hurt me no worries, I try to understand everyones critiscism and advice. and here are your responses. Let me start with an announcement before I respond to your post.

I think you misunderstand. There is no separate bracket. If you look at the last tournament structure, it was a SINGLE BRACKET. Beginners are NOT sheltered from having to play other people. The only thing is that their prize fund is protected and awarded by rating. I’m not asking people to play nice, I’m creating a system where they don’t have to. Playing nice or going easy on people in games is almost insulting to me, and I don’t support that, especially for people playing against me. I want everyone to come out hungry and thirsty for that win, but I also want to give the beginners some “hope” or a consolation prize, something they can be equally willing to fight for. I know I would fight even harder if I knew there was a chance for me to get something, not that I go into the tournament planning to lose, but lets face it, 90% of you guys would easily dominate me, and Dios-X could probably destroy me with his eyes closed.

If a lot of people are upset and disappointed, then let them speak up, for the most part it looked like a lot of people had fun, even myself, and I promise this next tournament will be better hosted and streamed, now that we’ve had a chance to see what its like. I had lots of fun meeting new faces, everyone I met, it seemed was genuinely nice and helpful to me, and once again, I know its not the standard way of running things, but I think the SD scene needs a jolt of something new anyways. **Again, there really isn’t much different about this tournament structure, just a small subsidized prize pool for the beginner class. I could just take that $1 out of every 5 towards the venue, since we are way in the red, but I don’t need the money as much as I need to see the SD scene grow. **

See you guys all tomorrow!

Also, remember that the tournament structure has changed.

Open Section will be 50-33-17, so if there are 20 people like last time, that would be $20-13-7

I posted the corrections in the first thread, on facebook, and twitter. The adjustments will be accounted for for the first tournament as well, so Dios X needs to claim $10, MaximusPrime - $7, and OMFGerald - $4 for their performance last week.

A beginner’s consolation prize might as well be part of a separate tournament.

And why is that? How will that encourage more players to play?

If the beginner tourmeys are bringing out new and more players than thats good for the scene.
It does suck for the “pros” or the old school players, but its a new era and we need new players for the scene.

I like everything about this venue. The destination is right in the middle of san diego. It’s like 15 minutes away from the south east players and 15 minutes away from the north county players. The room is nice, just don’t put setups in the middle of the room and youll be fine. Basically put all the set ups on the the wall and you should be good.
The only thing I don’t like is it closes at 10pm, but you cant do nothing about that because its not you guys its the venue.

I’m glad to have you guys part of the sd scene and wish you luck.
The scene can get nasty to new people but just keep up the good work and youll guys have my full support.

Thanks alot. It means a lot coming from you.

See you guys tonight!

If you really want to encourage weaker players you might want to setup some sort of danisen system for casuals so people feel like they are working towards something even if they aren’t placing in tournaments.

Loading up a 5ms monitor and xbox w/sf4 tonight, just a heads up if you guys got room.

i had to look that up haha, but that is a brilliant idea. I will put some thought into how we can enforce and reward that system. thanks alot for the tip actually, i had never considered or heard of such a thing

I dont know how many setups we are going to have, but I’ll make room for yours!

Okay, I’m most likely going, expect there to be at least two or three P4A setups, so if you’re interested in playing or trying it out, feel more than welcome to.

Current logo reminded my friend of something… http://i.imgur.com/PARKH.jpg

we use to do this at ttf
we called them level up stations during vanilla
we had like 4 set ups
tv 1 pros
tv 2 intermediate
tv 3 alright
tv4 noobs

thats the old thread for it but i dont know if i put how it was ran

Yo I left my backpack over there its a purple checkered one so yeah…Did anyone see it? I would very much like that back…

Another good night everybody! P4A was fun, and watching everybody get crazy hype for UMvC3 was bueno as well! Unfortunately, this may be the last time I come for a while since classes at SDSU start next Monday. :frowning:

I’m going to SDSU too! Hopefully you can still make it out!

Congrats to JonKun for winning the AE tournament tonight! Mr. Certified for placing second, and Nghia for a strong 3rd.

13 players entered, so we closed the beginner class.

1st - JonKun - $20
2nd - Mr. Certified - $13
3rd - Nghia - $6

Thanks to all that came out tonight, Marvel Team Tournamaent was mad hype, and lots of good casual AE play and P4A as well!

Special recognition goes to Max, for his awesome commentary and help with the AE stream. The stream was laggy, due to lack of bandwidth at Pangea, but we are looking to fix that next week. Fortunately, the entire stream should have been captured locally, so we should have those videos up for you within the week.

Please remember, you can always make small donations or by snacks and t-shirts to help support the cause!

Also, regarding side tournaments. We were aware of a P4A and the Marvel side tournaments tonight. As long as the side tournament you are hosting is not the same game as the main tournament, and is FREE you may run it at any time!

If there is money involved, we ask that you see an SDFGC member beforehand, and we ask that the players (either through the tournament fee or just a seperate fund) make a reasonable donation to the venue. We aren’t trying to stop you from having fun, just ask that if you do come to our casuals and decide to host a side tournament, please make a donation to our venue, and check with a team member before hand, as many of them are paying out of pocket and dedicating their time and effort towards making the venue available to all of you!

We appreciate all of your contributions to the effort, and we’ll see you next week!

When the ratings come out for this weeks AE tournament, the best 3 beginners will get some form or tournament credit or small prize instead of a prize fund only because the tournament pool was too small, but we still want to reward you for coming out and playing it out.

Remember, if you want T-shirts, we’re coming out with a few more t-shirt design, but the SDFGC shirt you see the staff members wearing is $20, any size. Message me or wait for the website to update to order yours and help support the venue!

I saw it when I was packing up but I thought you were still around so I left it. Sorry dude.
