San Diego Saltmines (Weekly Tournaments & Casuals)

Good opening, i had fun look forward to doing it all again!

Good shit everybody! Sure it was hot, stuff and unorganized, but it was a lot of fun. It was cool that P4A was given a spot, I was the Naoto player btw. Anyway, San Diego Saltmines looks like the kind of weekly event where every fighter is welcome, which is great, hopefully some of you guys pick up JoJo as well.

thanks for coming out and brining your setup! see you in 2 weeks

Sorry for the hectic first session, glad you all had fun regardless! when its not so humid in SD it should be a little more bearable, and you guys should have just bought an ice cold soda from our concession staff (all proceeds go directly to helping pay for the venue, which is currently coming out of pocket)

and yes, every fighter is welcome, every game is welcome. if you want to play it, by all means play it.

ratings and other bracket prizes will be awarded later in the week, after I finish my finals. I look forward to seeing you all next week.

Looks like we are going to be running a best of 3 AE tournament next week. what do you guys think about that?

AE all day.

The place is big enough to run both tournaments and there were more than enough setups to have both AE and Marvel. There’s really no need for a biweekly marvel/ae tournament and it can most definitely be run in 3 hours or less.
Also I still think there’s no need for different leveled pools for a tournament. It’s the player’s decision on whether or not he wants to progress in the brackets.
The venue is nice and it’s good that there’s another place to play in San Diego though.

For those of you who didn’t make it, come check out what you missed.

The venue is nice and has plenty of room. I saw 12 or more stations set up with drinks/shirts/snacks/water for sale for helping to pay for the venue.

Im going to be totally honest here. I think this place should charge a venue fee of 3$ a person just to get that out of the way. Make sure the place stays open and you guys are staying afloat. There was around 40 heads in there. 3$ a head is enough for venue once a week.

When running tournaments, pick either PS3 or Xbox and leave it at that. Tournaments running on multiple consoles is never a good idea. Grand Finals last night was a good example of that. 3 people playing sets on ps3 when the main stream is xbox? Then the stream monsters sit there with no matches to watch because matches are happening only off stream. And grand finals had a ps3 pad player. Had to do a system switch which took alot of time.

Pick one sole console please. One that is converter friendly. If the pad players don’t have converters, get one.

And the tournament tier structure thing has got to go.

TTF gets mad heads at times, 30 to 40 people. The tournaments there are THREE dollars. Not even Five. Three. And we get like 9 people to enter (which really is disappointing, cmon guys…).

SD Saltmines got 19 people to enter (alot of new people) at 5$ a head. 95$ in the pot. I won grand finals and got 1st. I got paid 10$.

I paid around 5$ in gas to go back and forth to mira mesa, and 5$ to enter the tournament. so in total, I made 0$.

For those 5$, some of that money goes to venue fee and something else. Which is why im suggesting the 3$ venue fee and a separate fee for tournaments. Please keep it 5$ though. Either players stay hungry or just play casuals on the side, but please give tournament players actually something to stay hungry for.

70/20/10 split is the way to go for tournaments and im standing by that. If things don’t change and the format remains the same, as nice as it is to have a roomy venue with tons of set ups, if the tournaments have a end profit margin of 0$ by the end of the day, im going to have to just stick with TTF since its closer to me and they do charge for venue, but the tournament fee is separate and goes to the players, as it should.

Hope you take some of my advice into consideration.

I wouldn’t mind paying just to get in, IIRC, someone who posted on San Diego’s thread in Dustloop said that the people running it on Monday paid out of their pockets just to have us there, so us paying a short fee if there’s going to be at least 20 of us there every Monday should help them out. Don’t know if they’ll be seeing the same numbers once Fall semester hits though.

numbers always go down during school
i mean it really doesnt effect ttf since we all live hella close to it
but ill still be making it out
plus if the numbers drop at saltmines your still in convoy and theres stuff to do

well said
you cant baby the scene
theres been many discussions about this topic
from all sorts of known players and regular joes

sic pics :]

i do consider your advice with some weight, as to the caliber player you are. and you are right. the way the tournament was set was unacceptable to the higher class players. I have decided to revise it, but i insist on maintaining a beginner class. I am going to dissolve the intermediate class and add that pool to the open bracket, effectively doubling the prize pool for then open section.

I understand your frustration, but for those of us who aren’t as good as you, (or for me at least) i dont travel to play games to make money. I just go to play. the money is just something that motivates me to play for, but it doesnt factor into my decision making process if you understand what i mean? I could make a whole lot more money by just staying at home and doing work, not playing tournaments, and it is not my intention to create a tournament to supply good marvel players with a source of weekly income. My intent is to establish an event that beginners will feel welcome and inclined to goto and get better.

I guess my perspective is skewed, but I can see where you are coming from, and believe me, I feel your frustration. However, as a beginner player myself, I know the frustration and low motivation that comes with getting your ass handed to you over and over. Yes I agree its the only way to get better, but it doesn’t mean it has to be as painful as it is. As it stands, there are too many little motivational barriers towards introducing beginner players into the scene. From my experience at Box Arena and free tournaments here and there, free events are a great way to motivate beginner players and get that spark going. Once that spark is going, then i agree, they should be looking for a more rigorous tournament venue, where they arent babied. (i.e. the open section). I hope you can try to understand my thinking, I know it must have been a long time for many of you since you were as bad as I am at fighting games.

and I respectfully disagree. I agree you cannot baby the scene as it stands, but if you want to introduce people INTO the scene, you’re going to have to play a little nicer with them. once they’re in, i agree, its all fair game, but thats not my aim.

that being said, the tournament structure and ratings will be restructured and updated tonight when I get back from work. I hope you will all continue to come out and support us, but if not, it was great having you with us and hearing all your thoughts and input. Even if you don’t agree with me, you can’t deny that changing up the way things work around in the scene can only be good for the scene. Worst case scenario, no new players come at all, and its just a new place for old players to play. If new players are coming out, then the old scenes (ttf) are still around.

I look forward to seeing you all on Monday, and hopefully one day we can see eye to eye on this issue, whether it simply be an understanding of differing views, or a merging of ideologies.

Oh one last thing before I sign off for a bit, Dios-X I appreciate all your constructive criticism, and yes, we will be implementing a one console tournament, that was too much of a headache to be nice to everyone and accomodate both consoles, though if I can think of a more efficient way to do so, I may go back to dual console.

thanks for pointing out we have things for sale, i think most people didnt even realize,

and i refuse to charge a door fee on principle. Even if it costs me more money, complete noobs like me shouldn’t be charged to play a game they are already bad at. if veteran players benefit from such generosity, then thats fine with me. if they want to make small donations through cash, credit, or simply buying a snack from us, then that would be a great way to contribute, especially if they are used to paying a $3 door fee anyways, might as well get some soda and snacks for your money.

I understand its not likely to be self sufficient without a door fee, but my hope is that people will understand that donations through buying shirts/snacks, or simple donations are VOLUNTARY. if you dont have the money to help out that week, im not going to keep you from playing. its a game for goodness sake, come out and have some fun. especially in times like these, i wouldnt be able to sleep at night if i knew i was charging newbies and students like myself to come and relax. I will find a way to keep casuals free and run the tournaments more smoothly, even if I have to take up a second job.

my dream is if the scene gets big enough, we will be able to sustain ourselves simply through a tournament, as it should be.

I look forward to working with you all in the future and hopefully running a larger tournament later in the year!

I’m moving to San Diego in about a month and was wondering what’s the best way to keep up with what’s current with this group? This post? facebook? website? No need in waiting until I’m there to start getting involved with stuff.

facebook, this thread or twitter, all 3 are updated regularly, so whatever your choice of social medium!

glad to hear we’re getting more SD players, see you soon!
