Samurai Showdown Thread

Those silly systems were excellent and well thought-out once you dove into them. Plus the added bonus was they usually only came into play on the final round as they were once per match deals, and the systems countered each other.

I never really felt robbed by the system.

If meditation was messing you up, here’s the counter. Save your meter, and when they hit you, rage to avoid getting hit hard, their meditation meter should run out unless they have a ton of it, then you have rage. Also, you can risk going for the instant kill move- which moves at full speed and beats anything they can do (as they are meditating they can be instant killed) A miss can get you issened on reversal timing only.

So there is depth to the system. The biggest change is that jumping becomes REALLY discouraged once meditation comes into play.

I will be finishing payment on my SSIV AES cart in about two weeks and I will be runing that shit and SSV on cart at my tournaments as a side tourny on a regular and will add it as a 2 on 2 team tourny as well. 2009 is going to be so much fun! When Samurai Spirits Sen hits, it is all overy baby. SFVI what…,HD who…? wILL NOT BE ABLE TO HEAR YOU, WILL BE TOO BUZY SLICING AND DICING!!!

> So there is depth to the system.

I don’t think anyone said that there wasn’t depth to the system. Just that in contrasting it to SS2, the lack of said systems in SS2 doesn’t automatically mean that it has more depth than SS2.

They key difference between SS0S and SS2 to me: SS0S has deeper systems, but SS2 has deeper characters. It’s really a preference thing. From as objective a stance as I can take, I think they’re about roughly equal. But I prefer SS2’s feel and controls myself.

(Though Ukyo wasn’t the only thing stupid in SS2; dashing throws were really stupid as well).

Black Shroud:

I’m gonna have to ask: Who are the 4 Kings of SS4? I read your tier list on your site, and (your forums are down at the moment) IIRC I remember Slash Nako, Bust Sogetsu, Slash Sogetsu, and Bust Galford being on top. Was BUst Haoh up there too? Can’t remember. Slash Nako and Slash Soggy I agree with (Bust Haoh as well if he’s up there), but Bust Sogetsu is news to me. And I was also astonished that Bust Amakusa was so low; that definitely seems wrong. Bust Galford I always thought was overpowered, but I later thought that he wasn’t quite as stupid as the other top characters. I also thought Bust Tam Tam was a lot higher than where you had him.

Anyway, from my experience, what I had seen and what I had heard, I would have thought the top chars were Slash Nako, Slash Soggy, Bust Amakusa, and Bust Haoh. Bust Galford, Slash Hanzo and Bust Soggy would have been under them.

EDIT:

Hey, your forums are back up now. And… huh. It has Zankuro listed? People play him seriously?

As for the rest… Bust Genjuro no.4? I had forgotten about Slash Hanzo, which is odd because I had this conversation with Dandy J not too long ago. I see Bust Haoh is indeed up there. But Slash Genjuro also high? And Bust Galford is way down at no.8. So what’s this Four Kings thing? And again, no way is BUst Amakusa at no. 20. WTF…

Whoa wait: Cham CHam? WTF, is this from the PSX version or something? If so, forget this list then. >:|

Thanks for response Shroud. I used to play SS in the arcade and just recently got back into it, but can’t find much info on SS 3 and SS 4 as far as the tournament history and the supposed tier lists. I seem to have alot of fun with 4, specially with Bust Gal, who is just alot of fun with his emphasis on lightning. He does seem very fast and aggressive, without the zoning aspect of poppy and the projectile. I think it sux they didn’t add more of his moveset to SSVP.

Who are and what makes them the 4 kings? Are they god tiered or just the high tiered chars of the game?

thanks…

Ohh yeah cool checking out your site now it seem to go up and down at any given moment?? Not sure why its doing that. You have alot of info on here ill be check this out alot for the comming weeks. Good stuff!!

Rasetsu Haohmaru because of his Calm Blade setups and great weapon flipper. He can make very long combos with Calm Blade setup. Rasetsu Galford because of Plasma Fist, kawarimi setups that leave opponent with wooden log as he comboes Galford and the fact he destroys Sogetsu. Shura Hanzo because of his Rage Enhanced fireball spam setups (very annoying and almost unescapeable), again kawarimi (rasetsu hanzo lacks this), and some good teleport game

Gonna have to ask for some exposition there. What’s kawarimi/kawarimi setups and how exactly does Bust Galford destroy (Slash I assume?) Sogetsu.

Also, you only mentioned 3. Who’s the 4th King: S.Soggy?

“Kawarimi no jutsu” is a term for ninja disappearing, leaving wooden log to take damage in own stead, while himself doing sneak attack at opponent. Actual skills of Galford and Hanzo are named Imitate Replica and Migawari no Jutsu (Substitution Jutsu), but I wrote general term because its more widely known, especially after being popularized by Naruto media franchise.

Rasetsu Galford destroys Sogetsu because he effectively prevents Sogetsu from early rage, because he can block last hit of Sogetsu’s 14-hitter CD combo; and Shura Sogetsu is a beast when raged due to his Moonlight (geyser move) being enhanced and enabling corner traps.
But Rasetsu Galford can get around those easily with his teleports too, and as he is close range character he has more tools to assassinate Sogetsu after teleport than Shura Galford who plays long-range runaway game. Sogetsu dominates at long range, Rasetsu Galford at short range; getting close to Sogetsu is easy for him and it wins the “range war” at same time.

4th king is Shura Nakoruru. She is a combo beast; she is ranked 1st in game’s tier list while Zankuro himself is ranked 2nd. Her hawk stuns opponent, she has multi-hitting dive attacks which can connect from her medium slash which is fast and has good range; she has ABCD cancel of those moves as well; she can make really long combos in the back; while on hawk she can cross-up opponent easily too. AND she can escape Sogetsu’s corner traps as well, on her hawk.

Sogetsu is ranked high at tier list, because he is effective against most of characters, but his fatal flaws are matchups with Galford, Basara and some other characters who can both escape corner traps and punish him.

Ah I see. See, as far as I’m concerned Slash Soggy is the most god awful broken thing in SSIV (I’ve seen him inflict 100% block damage). I was earlier told that Amakusa was a counter to him, but that seemed really fishy (can you perfectly teleport out of every spout attempt?). I can see Bust Galford being a harder match up for S.Soggy (but Basara? Really?). But IMO, escaping (more like avoiding) the traps and punishing him is… unreliable. All it takes is a single knock down for Soggy to screw you over. But Bust Galford is indeed a beast up close, so I guess he can actually make it hard for Soggy to get the spouts going consistently.

I knew about Slash Nako so no argument there. Dunno how well she deals with S.Soggy though.

However, I have to say that AFAIK all those Replica attacks in SS are garbage. Well maybe not Hanzo’s so much, but Galford’s? Who the hell actually gets hit by that?

Can I get tiers for IV and a small run down of why that character is in that tier? VSP would help too.

Shura Sogetsu is my main char in SS4, so I know his weaknesses actually. There are several ways to escape corner trap and that block damage.

By the way I made a guide for SS6’s survival mode, with missions translated to english so you actually understand what you need to do:

Anakron if you want detailed rundown, then ask at my forum, for link see above.
Its categorised at least and info wont drown like in 1-thread location at SRK.
Im not gonna write down all the characters here, lol

Thanks. Do all those people in that forum play on 2DF?

I’m down for some IV.

Okay, so I’m trying to get into V Special now. I’m still learning every little nuance in the game, and keep in mind that I’m using a game pad which is not ideal for this game (what with the ABC, BCD, AC, and BC attacks). I prefer using Genjuro do to him being pretty easy to use, but I can also use Jubei and Hanzo (somewhat), I would love to learn Yoshitora, Ukyo, Gaoh, and Rasetsumaru. But that will take time I realize.

Here is the replay of the matches via 2DF, http://2dfighter.com/freeplay/2DF%20FreePlay%20Client.application?replay=40/2009/16/21584_4731_128766376735876245.2df&p1=Ophelia%20Guardian&p2=Alex2501 As Genjuro I had great difficulty getting to Rimururu. Every friggin’ projectile she/he would throw at me would keep me away, the game of keep away really got to me. They have 3 projectile attacks, which I feel is excessive; the ice mirror (which if I attack her through it, I do deal damage, but I take damage too), the ice floor, and the rising/falling ice. I could not get near them to close the gap. I think ‘hey, I can jump it’ but no, falling/rising ice gets me. They do the ice mirror, I block and wait, and in the meantime they dash in and grab me. Rinse and repeat strategy.

This one character (and the other Ice character whose name I forget for the moment) I find really annoying to deal with. Are there any strategies I can use?

@ Anakron
Yeah, no one plays on kaillera right now as I am concerned.

@ Alexander
Haha, you cant get to Rimururu.
I left some Genjuro tips right now in his section there
http://forum.int13.ru/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=72&p=3114#p3114

Overall strategy vs Rimururu or any spam character is to block & punish, or to feint attack, block her punishment & punish her, also try to drive her in corner. She will tend to attack you with slashes in close and when you block them you would want to punish her but she will guard cancel them into moves, mostly in Ice Flower (rising ice). So punish her after her whiffed/blocked special moves only. And if you slash at her Ice Mirror you will eat the damage you would give her.

As for controls, I play on keyboard myself, and original games at arcades were played at arcade sticks, so I cant really say something about pad.

Well, that helped somewhat. I’m slowly getting better at the game.

The only characters that give me trouble are keep away characters like Rimururu, the other Sub Zero character, and Mina. I know they can take a lot of damage, but closing the gap is the biggest issue I have.

I saw this video:

And the player using Enja was experiencing the same problem I have of closing the gap. I think using Hanzo may be the solution to that.

@ Black Shroud - I took a look at your SS Tenka movelist and posted a reply in that forum. Also I made a new thread about Character Strats. Going to go into practice mode tomorrow and work on my characters.

i just wish there was a way to play SSVsp on my x360

I wish there was a way to play it on any console really. We got close with V on the first xbox but as far as I know it isn’t BC with the 360. Is there any official and firm word on if V Special is going to be on the upcoming and constantly delayed Anthology?

SNK denies V Special by all possible ways since the Nevada-tan incident (school slashing) after SNK got big troubles and started SSVsp censorship campaign. Since then, SS5sp wasnt touched by SNK.
As for the console lovers - is it hard to get a good gamepad and big monitor for your PC and play SSVsp online with lag compensation ?? Is it too different from sitting before TV with console pad ? lol
