Actually, I was thinking that they should have not implemented State of NOthingness, not the Zetsumei Ougis. The oneshot kill moves aren’t that great or useful, even if they weren’t a counter to State of Nothingness.
I understand how and why the systems were arranged, but from a casual standpoint, they can be confusing.
Shiki:
IN Tenka’s case, I agree that it’s more important that it just be a good game. Which I believe it is. But the low damage and shallowing of defense, along with all the other changes (increased cancelability on moves for example) does make the game seem rather un-SS-like and more like a “standard” fighter.
Virtua_LEon:
Sadly, there’s reason to worry that the US version might be substantially different (and worse) than the JPN version of Rokuban Shobu, hence my questions. See also: Orochi Saga.
By 3 characters, you mean Iroha, Gaira, and Mizuki?
For Iroha at least, it’s not a loop. She can only use her super throw once. For Gaira and Mizuka, their infinites are banned in tournament play. Problem solved.
Isn’t that in EVERY SNK GAME EVER?
Flipping an opponent’s weapon and trying to prevent them from getting it is a part of other SamSho games too.
Amakusa is really the only one who can exploit it.
And?
The game does have a balance problem, but it’s not worse than a lot of more popular games.
They actually did try to target new fans with the release, mainly with the creation of Iroha.
But why is the fact that they wanted more people to get in SS such a bad thing?
Okay, targeting new fans, then why we just dont make next SS game with Mina, Iroha, Suzuhime and Nakoruru as top tiers, and 20+ fanservice characters including all Cham Cham’s friends from pachinko game, and all Nakoruru’s friends from NakoADV, make gameplay a cross between KOF:MI and Tekken but with swords in hands, get Falcoon to design character costumes, then add some colorful MvC/TvC-styled arenas, music from a chinese restaurant, seyus from the street like in Tenka, announcer from KOF:MI2, then insert a storyline from Oedo Love Scroll, and finally insert 6 button control system with two buttons for sword attacks, then for example left kick, right kick, left boob smack and right boob smack, and call that Samurai Shodown Paradise
I guarantee more people will get in SS, but even more people will leave it, lol
SS2 is solid, no question, but the thing actually is, a really big chunk of SS gameplay mechanics, special moves, characters was uninvented back then. In comparison with newer games, SS2 will inevitably feel limited in roster and gameplay. For example I like characters Sogetsu, Suija and Asura. Even if SS2 is super good, those are nowhere to be found.
If SS6 would be a qualified game, I could just play anyone on Shin groove, but thats a big “if”.
Personally my favourite from SS games seems to be Asura Zanmaden (isnt lacking in both roster, gameplay, music, atmoshpere and storyline), but while being badass, its still unemulated sigh HNG64 sigh
SS5sp is the game I played the most though, and its always fun because of big cast and fair balance.
I honestly couldn’t care less about most of the roster that came in the later games. For its time, SS2 had a LOT of options and very robust gameplay. A lot of the extra options introduced in later games seem to do more to limit variety in gameplay, rather than encourage it. 0SP hit it right on the nail for the most part, but overall I just prefer the feel of SS2.
Do you own a Hyper Neo Geo 64? I have been thinking of grabbing one but the VERY limited supply of games makes me wary. Plus I have heard horror stories about it’s power consumption, like would my regular HAPP power supply be enough for it and my supergun.
Asura Zanmaden is basically your SS4 in 3D with pseudo 3D Tekken-3 style arenas, it retains like every SS4 mechanic and adds new ones, and has some of the coolest characters and character designs.
I do not own one, to start I dont have the space to locate it, plus shipping, and low salaries in my country (Ukraine). HNG64, ask on neogeo.com, but if you have arcade cabinet and can find the board itself on eBay or Amazon being near your country, you can get it together with games pretty cheap I guess. #1 aim is to get revision 2 of the board, and #2 aim is no shipping price to pay, basically
I’m also over at neo-geo.com but the stories on the system are varied, especially when it comes to using it on superguns. There is one on ebay right now for $25 but it is untested. I also registered for your forum, just waiting for the verification. I don’t play the games on emulators, I like to stick to the actual cart in my MVS.
I do agree the game lost some things in its iteration on the Atomicswave system, but so did KOF (well, actually I’m not too found of KOFXI so maybe that was a bad example), and I don’t consider it the best, but from playing it, I still know this was a title mainly meant fans like us. Sure, there’s Iroha and stuff to get in new people but…
In anycase, my personal list for favorite SS games:
To me, SS Zero Special had a large cast of characters, deep and balanced system, the feel was retained, the stage and music was good; it pretty much has everything you need. SS64-2 was not just a great 3-D fighter but a good one in general, and I love how its Bust/Slash system was made deeper in that game than in SS4. Tenka is next because its like a poor man’s SS0sp mixed with CvS2. And I suppose that I’m biased on that note because CvS2 was the first game I played in tourneys and took seriously. The second SS64 was fun to me and I liked how they tried to make it different, but the exhaustion system is annoying. SS2 is solid, nough’ said but is irrelevant next to SS0sp. SS4 is fun, but sucks at high level play; SS0 is fun and has great presentation but has balance problems, SS is irrelevant but okay, and SS3 is garbage.
Again, I agree Tenka has made some mistakes. But they tried, and they did consider the fans; also perhaps on this issue I’m once again biased as I’ve been waiting for an SS update before Tenka rolled around that would spark interest, and it wasn’t a total sellout so I became enamored with it. There are better titles though.
And I still don’t see why they didn’t use Earthquake’s SVC chaos sprite in Tenka! :wasted:
@ jamiejame11
Rasetsu/Bust Charlotte is worser than her Shura/Slash counterpart, but they play similarly for most part.
Rasetsu/Bust Galford is average character in SS3, but in SS4 he is one of 4 top characters, known as “Four Kings” in high-level play in asia. Although he cant zone, he is pretty mobile and fast, can escape corner traps, has own trap setups including cancel in unblockable grab, then he destroys Sogetsu who can become major obstacle to other characters, and when unarmed he gets Plasma Fist move which is one of best moves in game, its super fast, does lots of damage (can kill opponent from 6 hits), almost no recovery AND it can combo in itself in the corner hitting in opponent’s back. Basically if unarmed Rasetsu Galford grabs you near the corner, you are dead meat
@ Tech Romancer:
It seems that Ass-quake is smaller than he should be in SS6…like they didn’t quite scale him right; and that stance is disgracefull, i mean it seems like hes facing the screen instead of the other player… and even the colour of his suit seems a bit fishy… I mean pink instead of orange? Yeah cool update of the wardrobe ??
Also gameplay-wise he got considerably nerfed in Tenka, making him more of a trash character. His main tools are gone (Fat Copy, old aerial gut attack with huge hitbox and cross-up ability, fast and damaging heavy slashes - those were nerfed), plus his Fat Breath does less block damage.
IMO Samurai Shodown 2 was nearly perfect and the best on the series. Ukyo is stupid, but other than that the game is excellent. SS5sp is really good too but the silly systems they added (Meditation mainly) ruin it a bit for me. More systems doesn’t equal to more depth, by the way. I also like SS2’s control system much more than 5sp’s.
