I want to get into to this series. What’s a good game, and when is this Anthology collection slated for?
Q4 on the anthology and I’d recommend either SSVsp (emu/neo) or SST (ps2/atomiswave)
oh i only watched the last 10 seconds of that SS Sen trailer;
the beginning looks terrible. =\
IMHO I’d go with SS2 first (emulator). It might be the rosy-eyed view of nostalgia talking, but I’ve found that no other game after it in the series has captured the same atmosphere or feeling. SS2 has that grit, character and mystique about it (lots of hidden stuff) - everything afterwards feels too cartoony, although I did like the slash / bust system of 3 and 4.
ah, the SS series. my favorite series of all time, back in the days that is. the thing that fucked SS up was actually samurai shodown II. after this game back 94 everybody had gotten their hopes way the fuck up, too far actually. cause the game never reached the genius of II, part of the reason the series died out slowly. i blame snk for this. if they had released SSIV as III but without the damn Cd combos (and with the extra bg’s from III in it) and made V an actual complete new game from scratch, the game could have STILL been a big hit.
play them all and see what fits
I like how Tenka looks.
This may be kind of a bogus way to look at things(SinceI do play Super Turbo),but man.Samurai Showdown 2 looks so dated,I’m afraid to play.
This is yet another reason why even if the collection comes out with SSVSP, we still gotta include Tenka in tournaments…hands down…it looks the best out of them all…and its more or less like the CVS2 style of Sam Sho…
So I’ll be running SSVSP, SSII, SSIV, SST tournaments and whatever/special request.
I’m failing in love with Tenka right now.
I know this was answered a long time ago, but I don’t remember in what topic, and plus this thread needs bumping so I’ll ask here:
What exactly is the difference between Purple Nakoruru and the regular Nak in Tenka???
I think Purp was faster or sumthing. Too tired to remember, sorry. They both kinda suck though:sad:
purple nak is faster and does not suck
We played the shit out of SS2 during college, when it first hit the arcades. Most of us had migrated to Samurai Shodown 1 after getting burnt out on Street Fighter 2 (they lost me after Champion Edition), and once SS2 came out, the arcade at college had massive crowds around that cabinet. Really, really competitive and brutal matches every single day. Didn’t even need coffee back then, as the adrenaline alone was enough to keep you pumped for hours.
I remember learning my “doll moves” with Earthquake, I once broke Haohmaru’s sword (much to everyones shock and awe–I had no idea how I did that), and witnessed some of the true pros there bust out late blocking techniques and all kinds of trickery with every single character in the game.
I didn’t initially like SS3, because they’d dropped so many of my favorite players (where was my WanFu, Earthquake, and Tam-Tam? And man did Kyoshiro look funky!), but I did pick up Gaira and got good at both his slash and bust forms. SS3 grew on me after a while, and we played the hell out of it on the Sega Saturn. That game is actually extremely underrated, and a very bold move by SNK to seriously push the 2D weapons fighting into an entirely new area. The step-around moves, the overheads, the grab-and-push, all good stuff. The only serious issue I had with it was the broken counter attack system that would cost you over half your health if someone hit you the right way. Talk about a game that truly needed a “3rd Strike.”
SS4 was pretty decent–a nice hybrid of 2 and 3, bringing back my Tam Tam and I got way into Kazuki. But the art felt lazier, not as vibrant as SS2 or as moody and detailed as SS3. By the time 5 came out, I hardly noticed.
All that being said, Tenka looks AMAZING, and I would really like to get my paws on it. It looks like a nice blend of every single version they’ve made to date, and the new characters look nuts! I especially like the revamped backgrounds.
I don’t think any of the titles will ever reach that pinnacle that SS2 had set, in terms of a cohesive artistic/creative package, but if they can get close, I’ll be satisfied. I’m just grateful I got to experience this series in the arcade with my fellow fanatics at the time. Wow, talk about a golden age of 2D fighting games!

This has a lot of SSVSP matches of various sorts. This is why I think the ST folks could appreciate the game- throwing is important, execution really isn’t, and knowledge of moves is supreme. It doesn’t play like ST, but good ST players would do very well.
I can see it already guys…proof we may have to market both SSVSP and Tenka…both appeal to different audiences as I have been saying…
I have noticed that she doesn’t have quite the sucky recovery that regular Nak does.
However, her moves generally do a few points less damage. To me, that is a MORE than fair trade-off, because goddamn, does regular Nak get killed for whiffing ANYTHING.
Yes its surely a worthy tradeoff…
NO. We have limited resources (time, TVs, etc.) and therefore have to decide on one.
I know you’ve put a good deal of effort into Tenka and would be sad if it were dropped, but this is about far more than just you.
It doesnt matter to me either way…because either way I am going to be ready to win that cash…
So to tell you the truth it really doesnt matter…I’m still gonna be ready to win either way.
Edit- Also…whatever one is dropped the other will be marketed as an appetizer…
seeing as how there is a actual PS2 port of Tenka we should run with that until the samsho collection comes… then its up in the air but i think both should be run in all honesty
hope the ss2 challenge still stands when it’s out. I’ll be waiting until that day arrives :wonder:
