Samurai Shodown Sen aka Edge of Destiny

You can’t compare the animation of an inherently 3D game (Tekken) to the animation of a 2D turned 3D game (KOF:MI or SS:EoD). Both games have far different intentions when it comes to animation, pace, and gameplay. Apples. Oranges.

And, TTT had some weird looking models. Hwoarang’s clown shoes FTW.

Anyways, why are we already comparing this to VF5 graphically? We don’t even know what system this is supposed to come out for, do we?

EDIT: One of the few time SS stories are actuallytranslated to Engrish. It’s good to know what’s going on for once!

Sure he can compare the game to Tekken or VF5’s graphic engine. It hardly matters where it derived from; they are all 3-D based, next-gen fighters. There’s no sugar coating that.

Its running on the Taito X2 hardware: http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=903&gid=18659#18659

I don’t mind the graphics and the presentation. I have a beef with the gameplay, which is what really counts around here.

Tekken uses motion capturing and realistic movements that are much slower than those of 2D fighters like SF or KOF. You can do 4 or 5 kicks per second in a SF/KOF game. But, that would look ridiculous or extreme in a 3D game.

Characters do crazy, back breaking flash kicks and extremely unnatural movements in 2D games. SF moves were developed in the 2D hand-drawn world where you can get away with different degrees of realism that you can’t normally get away with in 3D.

That’s why people used to say the SF4 looks jerky compared to Tekken or SC. Of course it does. Because, to match the old 2D pacing, each move has to be much faster. A jab in Tekken =/= a jab in SF or KOF. Comparing then directly, without any consideration is silly.

And, BTW, KOF: MIRA also uses the Taito engine, and it’s a PS2 game. A bit of a stretch comparing potential PS2 games with the graphics of PS3 games like VF5.

Rioting Soul:

> When I look at this game, it’s at least obvious to me that SNKP intended to compete in Soul Calibur’s niche of the genre. Apparently, this time they decided to be more conservative in that regard by toning down the traditional 2D-style specials(do they even do chip damage in this game?).

Again, this is the problem: You’re not going to out-SC SC, so why bother? What purpose does this serve? Who is going to be fooled? Evo and yourself are probably a tiny minority. It would have been better for SNK to go off in their own direction (even a continuation of what they did with 2D SS in 3D, with much better efforts than the abominable SS64 games, would have been better) with Sen rather than throwing out a mediocre SC-clone.

> With that in mind, it not being SS-ish isn’t a minus for me but on the other hand I’m not as attached to the series as others are.

I could be wrong, but this game doesn’t appeal to long-time SS fans, at all. Now considering how SS has dwindled from SNK’s hierarchy (their own fault for botching SS3 so badly), perhaps that’s not a bad thing from a financial standpoint. Maybe there IS money to be made with a mediocre-SC clone with SS characters. It’s certainly violent enough. But I still think it would have been better, both for SNK and SS’s fanbase, if they had gone in a direction that respected what came before.

So then is every 2D game by the virtue of being 2D trying to out-SF2, guess why bother right? Besides that, how would you go about a 3D weapon based fighter with you’r own direction…if it isn’t broke don’t fix it so it makes perfect sense they would adapt namco mechanics.

So basically recreate a duplicate clone of game we all played before…this isn’t SF2 this is SS. I can appreciate the new direction, and there aspects I would have changed but overall I like the Namco style mechanics would suit a 3D iteration of this game fairly well.

No. Make SS in 3D. This is not SS in 3D this is something else masquerading as a SS game.

Right, cause going with mechanics that are proven to work is clearly a mistake as opposed to going with something completly experimental and unproven…maybe u all would be happy with this game can only be played with Wii remotes for true innovation lol.

As i said earlier in the topic forgive me for wanting my Sam Sho games to play like Sam Sho games. That’s why I play Sam Sho. I don’t want a 3D Street Fighter to play like anything but Street Fighter. And don’t throw that Wii Mote BS in here it has no place in this discussion. We’re not asking for Innovation we’re asking for Sam Sho. At least I am.

I don’t think that a series should be tied down by its original format. If SNKP wants to make a spinoff then they should have 100% creative freedom. Would Namco get the same flak if they decided to make a 2D Tekken/SC? Yeah, they could have made it a completely new game. But then you’d realize that the game would have the same character archetypes(Musashi homage, Iaido user, fencer, ninja, etc.) anyway. SNKP wanted to make a 3D weapons fighter along SC’s vein and they already have weapon-fighting characters.

As long as this isn’t the new(and only) direction SamSho will be taking then it’s fine.

Look, you already admitted earlier in the thread you’re not a big fan of the rest of the series, so why are you even arguing with us on that note? Of course if we’ve loved the rest of the series and its mechanics we are going be disappointed when the game makes a transition to next-gen without the stuff we love. The bottom line is we SS fans have been waiting for more games to come, and I in particular wanted to see a next-gen update (like many fans to their respective fighting games) building upon the formula we have come to love.

Again, why use the SS name if it has practically nothing to do with SS? We don’t need another freakin’ tekken clone when what we want is simply to enjoy more what drew us in before. And on that note, the game isn’t even being innovative so I can’t give it that either.

You asked me why sidestepping was useless. Look at those vids that were linked earlier. Did sidestepping help the players at all? Not from what I saw; all it did was give them something to do until they made their next pick or threw out a launcher. Just like Tekken, moves’ tracking properties are too damn good. Its pointless.

And what’s this BS about tying down the series? That’s *why we play it in the first place. *

don’t worry they can still make 2d samurai showdown games… kof has a 3d and 2d version

It’s a spin-off, that was the point I was trying to make. It isn’t a direct sequel, if it was then I’d think it was bad as well.

About the sidestepping. I couldn’t distinguish if the majority of the attacks that hit sidestep were horizontal or vertical. Is there any particular match that you could point to where it was obvious? If vertical attacks have tracking then that wouldn’t be good.

Ha, ha

Maybe the rumors of SSS’s demise were greatly exaggerated.

One thing you have to remember is Samsho has a spotty track record for quality

1 was ok, 2 was great, 3 was pure shit, 4 was controversial, 5 was mediocre, 5SP was awesome but no one played it, and Tenka was mediocre.

So taking the series in a new direction, or trying some new things, isn’t a bad idea. The problem was they gutted the soul of the game in the process- and the soul is what made Samsho Samsho.

Well, it’s not as if the characters don’t retain their classic personalities…

Haohmaru’s still cocky and he still spits sake on his sword…Nakaruru’s still cute…Ukyo’s still coughing and stuff during his win poses (Go, go super TB!)…Wan-Fu is still a meat head…

They all have classic moves…even the animal helpers show up.

It’s not like you can’t recognize anyone, or that characters are depicted differently…

So, why must a change in play mechanics = death of SS soul?

After all, every SS game feels pretty different from the last…

This game plays WAAAAAAAYYYY too much like Soul calibur, and the lack of blood, killing and everything else that made the SS series so great that everyone here mentioned already just makes the game even MORE dull (Although it does have blood and killing in the US version but not very much).

I wish they could of took the SF4 route with this game, or even the KOF12 route. Then again this game isn’t even made by SNKP. Instead it was made by the people who made the Tenchu series, which is quite odd considering how violent THOSE games are. But then again neither was SF4 made by Capcom since it was instead made by Dimps but at least those guys KNEW what they were doing with that game since about half of the group used to work for Capcom.

Whatsamattah, cutting someone’s arm/head/torso off with gallons of spurting blood ain’t enough for ya?

Desensitization!

Honestly, I’d rather have interesting gameplay, but that’s just me.

Fixed.

It’s also surprising that GG and Blazblue aren’t even on that list, nor are any characters from it.
