Samurai Shodown Sen aka Edge of Destiny

so yeah, ignoring the last 2 pages. I should pick up this game?

Im an SNK fan, I’m enjoyed XII, and I respect a LOT the saga and also the pro players of this game than IMO are the most skilled ignoring Virtua fighter of all the genres. but I really don’t care if this game doesn’t fall as a sam sho because is not a saga that I had in a mega altar

I would get it once it gets cheaper just for collection purposes of course. It looks like a PS2 fighter and the online is dead.

This is not quite SS / VF / SC / Tekken, although it looks like Sen tries to be all of those games at once.

Giantbomb site has a great quick lookup of Sen.

For those who would like to download it instead of watching on site, heres the direct download link

I read this thread because I played it in Japan and thought it was the biggest piece of shit ever. And I’m intrigued that there’s actually people who think it looks good. And right now I’m even more amazed that people still think it’s good after being able to play it. Lol.

It looks kinda good, on screenshots that is (although even japanese say Genjuro and Kazuki look like ass in Sen (specifically, they say Kazuki = monkey). However the game in motion is another story. The reviewer from Giantbomb rightly mentioned that he sees no momentum in those swings, most attacks in game are very fast swings from side to side, as if swords are made from plastic. Another thing is, theres not enough pushback off blocked attacks, which kinda gives you idea things to come.

i would take reviews from Giantbomb about fighting games with a grain of salt. online game sites don’t know shit about fighters. IGN gave sf4 a 9.3 for God’s sakes. i agree that the game is too damn dark though and the animations are ass. genjuro looks like a samurai hippie or some shit but kazuki doesn’t look like a monkey at all. he did in other ss games because he’s always crouched over and his hands are almost touching the floor.

I believe they took Genjuro’s colors too bright in Sen (the blue and pink stuff), and it looks weird. They knew better than that in previous 3D games, where he had black pants and dark red hair.

If I’m not wrong, Kazuki goes for the most default stances in samsho: he has 4
In 2D games he has semi-crouching “arm to floor” stance, in SS64 he has martial arts stance with arms crossed in front, in SSAZ a ninja stance with one hand on sword grip over his shoulder…in SS64/AZ Sogetsu had “sword on shoulder” stance instead and both Sogetsu and Kazuki use that one in Sen.

However the “monkey” remark goes mainly for his face in Sen

This is true, but we don’t need reviews. Its already well known the game is garbage.

I just can’t believe how much time blackshroud spends bashing sen and he loves ss64  Shroud i really do think you would enjoy sen, its better than any of the other samsho’s that are 3D. The juggle system is alot harder than i thought. All the juggles you see in arcade matches of sen are just begginer combo’s. I just dont think anyone got real deep into the game. the funny thing is i play with nagasia ### on xbl now. He is pretty awsome at sen. And i know nagasia like’s all the other ss3d games too.

If you happen to rec some casuals or good combos please post them!

Just couldnt pass on this golden post

Marked in bold the stuff I responded to here. Anyway, what do you think about arguments in the post I quoted? It seems after 10 bad and non-fun games Samsho franchise is finally on the right track? :wow:

The game fucking sucks.

Fun factor- 8/10

depth-5/10

graffics- 6/10

online netcode- 4/10 (but the game really doesnt have fast low attacks so the delay online does not affect gameplay too much)

overall- 7/10 maybe even 6/10

For those who are thinking of buying WAIT. Wait till it becomes cheaper trust me it will happen soon. This isnt a game you will need to play for years to become good at. Infact if you play this game for aweek you can master a character.

Samurai Shodown Sen rankings by gaming sites:**
IGN** http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/108/1081921p1.html = 4.0 / Ugly
1UP http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3178598&p=4 = D+ / Bad
ZTGameDomain http://www.ztgamedomain.com/9392/Samurai-Showdown-Sen.html = 6.0 / Decent
Xbox Evolved http://xboxevolved.e-mpire.com/article/Samurai_Shodown_Sen/6160.html = 7.5 / Silver
GameZone http://xbox360.gamezone.com/gzreviews/r39844.htm = 4.5
GameRankings Average = 5.5 (at 2009/04/06)
GameFAQs Rating Average = 3.6 (at 2009/04/06)

would be interesting to compare your rating by points (like graphics, netcode, etc), but those reviewers rate other things too like sound

Just tio clarify: Just because I think the game is merely mediocre in an absolute sense doesn’t mean I don’t dislike it. It’s a bizarre ugly dark SC/Tekken clone with charcters vaguely resembling SS characters. As I said, on it’s own, it’s merely mediocre and unnecessary, but from an SS fan’s point of view, it’s an abomination.

I’m only posting in this thread, aside from responding to specific things, to see what people say about the game out of curiosity. I’m not surprised some folks are enjoying it (except for m216) cause some people will enjoy anything, but I think the majority of people who will like it probably never played (or alternately - weren’t good at) an SS game before. But I’m not here to shit on the game unnecessarily (I don’t have to, it does that all by itself  or on those who like it. If you somehow like Sen, good for you! Better you than me.

Hmm its interesting you bring up sound. the music in the game is awsome (sound tracks). But for some reason at the main menu screen the game has static sounds when you select different modes. I tested this on two different xbox’s so i know its the game. This is very weird to me. I would give the sound 5/10 maybe less. But the music for the game is great.

I am not gona pepper up my answer’s. poeple who want honest answer’s can trust what i say. The game is simple so alot of advanced gammers wont like it. The game is not like samurai shodown, so samsho player’s might not like it. This game is for poeple who play fighting games casually and like swords  Its easy to pick up and play and have fun. My favorite characters in the samurai shodown world are kasuki sogetsu and i hate sogetsu in sen.

Dont listen to some game site’s ranking. These poeple havent played the game for over an hour. I have played this game for aweek. At first i was disappionted but the more i play it the more i enjoy it for some reason.

How would you rank characters in each type from strongest to weakest? I believe this will be easier than doing a full tier list. And also, which types are Draco and Golba?

POWER
Haohmaru, Genjuro, Wan-fu, Kazuki, Takechiyo, Suzuhime, Claude, Garros, Walter

SPEED
Nakoruru, Rimururu, Charlotte, Kirian

TRICKY
Hanzo, Galford, Kyoshiro, Angelica, Black Hawk, J

SKILL
Ukyo, Jubei, Sogetsu, Kim Hae-Ryueong, Jinbei

Edit: Moved Kazuki to Power group

I have a hard time making tiers right now. I have not learned every character. Also tiers change online depending on how much lag there is.

Online ukyo is not good, but in very bad lag wanfu is  As so manny japanese players have taught me lol. I agree that ukyo is top tier. I have not seen one person pick kyoshiro. Everyone uses hanzo and galford. The 3 most used characters online are hanzo, galford, hoahmaru.

ill tell you best two character in each department.

Skill- ukyo/sogetsu I put sogetsu because i had two for each anyways and i feel he is the next best in skill.

tricky- kyoshiro/galford I have not fought kyoshiro yet.

speed- nakoruru/charlot nakoruru is alittle better, charlot is better online.

power- takechiyo/kasuki takechiyo is alot better than kasuki but the next best is kasuki for sure. I would add hoahamru but i feel like his moves are easy to predict even though he has alot of power. (btw kasuki is power)

What do you think about bosses and which types are they? And are there only 4 speed characters in mai roster then (rurus, charlotte, kirian) ?

I put this on my Gamefly Q with every intention of keeping it once I got it. I got a $5 off coupon right before getting it, so, even better. After getting it and putting a little time into it now though (not a lot), I’m just not sure it’s even worth the keep it price minus the $5. It just seems inconsistent in jarring ways.

Some of the music and general sound is great, and feels Japanese, Samurai Showdown-y, then they through a little something more orchestrated, sounding more like Soul Calibur at you, or more wonky, like a song on one of the American Stages (I don’t remember specifically which one) which really seemed WTF out of place. A lot of the ambient noises that stood out to me in previous SS games, like board specific noises, or certain moves or weapon clashes, seem to not be there at all. The general menu selection noise seems kinda plain as well.

Visually, the menu look and transitions are very stylized and feel like SS, and the character art is good. Some of the models look okay, others are just WTF. SS always had a very stylized look to me, and I can see where that could be difficult to bring into 3D models, but some of these characters look like a first pass where work should have continued on them.

The fighting in general doesn’t seem very fluid to me, but I feel like I need to put some more time in for that. I dunno, I don’t have a problem with mediocre games or even bad games (especially awesomely bad games), but this one is feeling like maybe a $20 price max to me currently and should probably be called Samurai Showdown WTF . . .
