Well, think of it like 3D Mortal Kombat without barehanded fighting style, without much custom combos, without special moves, without interactive arenas, with juggles consisting of repeated single hit and with same command grab and same set of 5-6 fatalities shared between all characters.
There are special moves, just no projectiles. Also, a few of the juggles do just repeat a single (or two) hit. Everyone’s grab is the same old Samurai Showdown (grab then kick away) throw. And the “fatalities” are input as a move during the match or by finishing the opponent with a certain move (so that it cuts them in half or such).
Think of it more as a dumbed-down Soul Calibur with pre-Tekken 6 style juggles. It is fun, but not necessarily deep.
You know what would rule
If SNK went and made a new SS (in the vein of SS2 if I had my way) with KOF XII/XIII-quality sprites
It’s a pity SS isn’t mainstream enough (anymore?) to inspire that kind of effort on them
i think it says something about the state of the market because really what kind of idiot doesn’t like samurais
damn straight
can a mod change the title of the thread please?
Aside of that those “special moves” in Sen hardly differ from normals in concept. They are basically high hit / low hit / juggle starter. Few characters have teleports, and Galford has his dog, but overall you wont be able to tell apart most of specials from normals.
This is not the same old, as in SS1-SS2 everyone had unique grabs, in SS3-4-64-AZ-Shinsho you could do a custom followup to grab, in SS5-5sp each character had preset followup (still unique) which you may or may not use, and in SS6 it became automatic (but still unique to each char). Now in Sen theres just damn copypaste on 1 throw animation to 20+ characters, and looking at small kid like Rimururu knee kicking in the face big guys like Wan-Fu just feels weird.
Thank you very much!
Do you own sen? And i am not syaing this to insult you but you dont sound like you own the game. Every character has abunch of special moves that look very different. You know how the japanese players play blackshroud. They use the most effective moves over and over again. But every character has special moves. And only a handfull of characters have one button juggles (ukyo, kyo, nako). Hoahmaru has a one move juggle but its actully really hard.
There are some characters that only have one low attack, there are some characters that only have one launcher. Every character is different. the game really isnt as bad as it looks. It just doesnt have a huge amount of depth.
Btw some characters parry is a teleport move(kasuki, sogetsu, galford, hanzo).
@ m216xlegendx:
i tried kazuki out to see how hard his just input commands were and the hardest by far is his 123 enja thing. i could not get the just input on that one at all so he would start the combo, take the opponent into the air, but never hit him downward. when am i supposed to hit VS and then VS+K?
EDIT
i wish there was a wiki for this game to see how you’re supposed to do all the moves since the most they give you is an “N” and “,” for timing.
EDIT2
nvm, i just did it. for anybody else having problems with it, when you do :qcf::k: look for when he just starts to thrust his leg forward to pres VS. if you do it just after that, even it it’s before it hits, it still won’t work. after that you press VS+K just before the VS attack hits and you’ll see blue sparks coming out. i’ve done it three times in a row now but sometimes it takes me ten tries to do it again. if you do it right it will take half of your opponents life!
What the hell do you want a “special move” to do in a 3d game? There aren’t many options other than hit high, low, or juggle.
I haven’t played all the characters, but here is a quick list (definitely not a complete list):
Kizuki: Has Enja’s 3-move just frame combo. Has Enja’s fire pillar super.
Sogetsu: Has teleport. Has water pillar (works like Enja’s pillar).
Charlotte: Has multi-stab. Has Tri-Fount. She has Power Gradation (the uppercut).
Genjuro: Has his attack where he launches them and then slashes them mid-air with cards showing up.
Hoahmaru: Has his double uppercut. Has a wind attack launcher (not really a tornado anymore). Has earth splitter (i think that is the name) overhead.
Nakoruru: Can hang on her bird. Has her dash attacks.
Rimiruru: Has Ice Slide. Can make an ice stalagmite.
Damn im interested on the game more now. I have an edge for obscure/unknown fighters and Sen (IMO) has all the signs of becoming one soon. m216xlegendx if you and the other guys who have it could share more info please do!
Hey Pedro, when i finish playin with my copy, i’ll mail it to you
Best Buy is offering $10 off SS for Gamer Zone Club members last time I checked the April Insider.
well i can only speak for myself and tell you that i find the game a lot of fun and not nearly as bad as people have been saying. if you really like samurai shodown type games then you might not like this game because it plays a lot like tekken/soul calibur, etc… so don’t expect a samsho game, just play it as a new game. that said, it does retain some classic things like special moves, two attack buttons pressed at the same time will give you a really powerful attack, sword deflecting and some other small things.
it’s easy to do combos and there are a lot of high/low mixups but it’s not a very complicated game. i don’t think it will take too long to master any of the characters just that some characters have some really hard specials.
aesthetically the game is a mixed bag. some stuff looks good, some stuff looks bad. the stage music is good and the games presentation is good, especially with the ink style drawings when the game is bringing up the character selection screen. most of the models in the game are great or decent but the major problems being some animations look awkward (hands aren’t really holding weapon, etc…), horrible textures and a really boring lighting scheme. some sound effects seem to disappear during moves like kazuki’s enja combo and other little weird things. i think there’s actually only one background character and he’s in the middle-east stage selling fruits or some shit.
but for someone like me who’s been waiting to play this game and had the impression that it was really bad, finally being able to play it and see that it’s actually decent, made it worth the money i spent. if it doesn’t sell well (which is likely) it should be easy to find for cheap online in a month or two.
Haha I dont believe you…
Performing a combo is actually harder than you think. Not many of the pre-set strings actually combo; so, most characters only have a couple natural combos. Counter hits don’t change much for comboing…they only give extra damage and not hit-stun. Juggling is really your only way to get a combo. That’s why there isn’t a combo-counter in the game.
Also, the special moves themselves aren’t hard (usually just qcf), but the way the game reads inputs make it difficult. It seems like buffering is a big no-no. If you start the motion before the previous move recovers, then you will not get your special. Also, you have to make sure to press toward completely and not linger on any specific direction for too long (too long being a very short time). Pick Claude for example. His quick-step is 236 (qcf). If you do it right, then he will do a quick-step forward (and allow you to, at any point in the quick-step, do the follow-up attacks). If you instead just press 23 (down, down-toward) then Claude will start the animation for the quick-step and then go to a crouch state (not allowing you to do the follow-ups no matter how fast you hit the attack button). So, if you hit an attack button even a split-second before hitting toward, then you will not get the special to come out. This can obviously be confusing and frustrating to people who are unaware of the system.
hmm, that’s true. like i posted a couple days ago, i suck at 3D fighters and i don’t have too much experience with them. there is no combo counter and the moves in the game are really just an attack with high/mid/low followups for a mixup. i don’t have too much problems with the special motions but i only use two characters and have only experimented with the rest of the cast for a few minutes each. regardless, i still think the game is worth buying
Well bad news for me, my xbox finally went rrod. Good news is im borrowing a buddys xbox for afew days. SO the next few days i will be playing sen non stop. And after that i will only be able to get on acouple times aweek.
kasuki 123 is not that hard, what the command list doesnt tell you is the 2nd hit of the combo is also (just input). So you do QCF+kick- right when kasuki’s kick hits opponent you press VS- Right when VS hits you press HARD horizontal slash. To me the hardest part is hit 2. I found a small trick that works very well. Kasuki yells when he does qcf +kick. As soon as you hear him yell press VS. Offline i can do the 123 almost 100%. Online is another story lol.
I recently learned galford, he is really strong. Extremely good mix ups. But the interesting thing is his juggles suck. But he is still top tier . So that right there proves that not all the best character are good at juggles.
