simmer down. i was joking. anyways, are those ss64 games finally working?
ya seriously what’s taking so long on ng64 emulation… i’ve been waiting over 10 years for that system to be emu’d. I liked ss 64 1 and 2 and would love to play them again but they never brought either game out on console.
technically gameplay works, but only 2D stuff is displayed so far. You cant see character models; also no sound like for all HNG64 games on MAME.
We still wait next MAME update that will implement stuff you saw at that link, since latest MAME build released emulates palettes uncorrectly, and prevents SS64 from entering gameplay too (only SSAZ enters).
Well, even on current MAME build I managed to get to 10th stage of SSAZ while testing - thats while not seeing character models
I put all the related info to this thread

The SF4 models dont look morbidly overweight?
Any word on this game still coming out on consoles? It used to be listed on Gamestop’s site but isn’t anymore and i’ve heard nothing new about it.
Good, bad, or indifferent; i’d like to give it a shot.
It was postponed to 2010. Who knows, maybe they are giving good 3D titles of samsho more time to get emulated before releasing the bad one ^^
lol what?
Sorry for reviving this old thread, but when someone mentions an invalid reason as to why a game isn’t as popular as some others, I gotta… say something about it
First, I consider (or rather “considered” since I no longer play the game) myself PRETTY GOOD at DOA. While I didn’t play the first one for whatever reasons, I picked up the 2nd one when it came out on the Dreamcast, and spent a damn long time on it. Yeah, the girls and the breasts caught my eye, but the gameplay was actually interesting; it wasn’t as laidback as your other fighters, seeing as how while it is a rock-paper-scissor game, you can exploit it to your advantage (i.e. think quicker than your opponent).
In any case, I’ve played my fair share at local tourneys. If anything, the obvious flaw is the rock-paper-scissor formula – you may think that it’s a 33.3/33.3/33.3 type of game, but when the really-dumbed-down counter system totally negates punches and kicks (or rather, it’d be unwise for anyone to use punches and kicks; use them sparingly), you get a boring game. But alas, that’s why you have quick pokes, for those times when you obviously play the good-ol “mind-games”
Was the multi-tiered level crap a negative factor in this game? Uhhh, no? While some stages did have that, it wasn’t anything game-breaking. Really, suggesting something like that is really IDIOTIC.
Skip to DOA4, and now we have a counter-system that basically says, “Hahaha, you have X amount of counters, and all counters counter a different thing! Have fun guessing!” While the change was targeted towards the easy countering in the previous games, the change, altogether, made the game… stupid. As someone stated before, it became a mindless fighting game. Really, if you were to play it, you’d just play it for the chicks (then again, that’s why the majority bought the game ^^)
Again, was the multi-tiered level crap a negative factor in this game? And again, uhhh, no? If anything, there were OTHER, BIGGER FLAWS that you can point out – the multi-tiered level crap is definitely at the BOTTOM OF THE LIST (if you even consider it “bad”).
Sorry for the revival of this thread, but whenever I see someone bringing up “facts” when they’re not facts, I just have to say something Don’t try to belittle something with false accusations.
Samurai Shodown 64 (first 3D fighter with multi-tiered stages, with MK3 probably being first 2D fighter at that), is pretty fun to play because the stages are interactive - you have wall bounces in some parts of stages, breakables that lead to different tier of stage in other parts, and ringouts in yet other parts. So the stage takes active part in overall gameplay strategy, since no wants to have dangeorus stage zone behind his back. Now that its fully playable on MAME, everyone can try it and see.
On topic (SS:Sen): I wonder if we will ever see the official console releases taken that people hacked game’s arcade platform itself (TaitoX2) so those are basically playable on PC (for now its in theory since only BlazBlue: Continuum Shift surfaced for now, but sources say every TaitoX2 game is the same in that aspect). With only difference console version bringing would be playable bosses and pause menu, sales of console port would drop even below current level (which is low to begin with due to game’s low ratings and unpopularity)
COTA had multi-tiered stages and came out before MK3.
And “SS64” and “fun” don’t belong in the same sentence. That hot garbage had me longing to play Samurai Shodown 3.
Sen is stlil set for Europe last I checked. I don’t think the board getting hacked is going to stop them from releasing it, because if they were at all concerned about the game’s sales, they wouldn’t bother to release it anywhere.
COTA wasn’t a 3D fighter. I believe the point was the first THREE DIMENSIONAL fighter that had multi-tiered stages.
Besides COTA’s leveled stages didn’t affect you really, besides a change of scenery.
And SS64 is fine; don’t dare lump it with SS3. Just not your type of game. I will agree objectively that SS64-2 Is better but seeing as the engines focus on different things this is clearly debatable.
I wouldnt say SS64 is pro game, but its a fun to play, well, in a Power Stone, Smash, etc way. It puts characters in interactive 3D space and has probably easiest controls (every special move has 1 version for simplicity sake). Everyone has a bunch of different attacks/combo strings/juggles, and some amount of 1-version special moves.
When people compared two games, I often heard “SSAZ is more cool/flashy/polished experience, while SS64 is more fun to play”. Few examples: In SS64 you can do unblockable uppercuts with Hanma to launch opponent very high, and you can upgrade Kazuki’s fireball to the state of nuclear warhead (get raged and use enja awakening at same time, then try to do fireball); you can teleport into background with Sogetsu, you can knock people into parts of stages, etc.
Also SS64 isnt as immediately broken as some say, it has 2 systems that prevent infinites, and only 1 specific way to bypass them both; theres no way you will do a infinite accidentally, so I believe that way will just end up softbanned, should the game be played competitively.
@ Ultima:
Since SS64 gameplay type is considerably different, I would recommend to look at it as a fun minigame with 11 ss characters in it. Plus minigame approach would do justice to game’s graphics and the size of cast. Such trick wouldnt work with Sen though, since there they just flat-out tried to copy namco and failed (game is more limited and more wooden than namco games)
Just wanted to say that it looks like XSeed is realeasing this game stateside, but release date is still tba.
I never said that the game wasn’t popular because of tiered stages. I said that I THINK competitive players would rather not have tiered stages, than have tiered stages. Sounds like completely different statements to me. I believe I also said to take everything I said with a grain of salt because I was only basing the idea on my observations, which are that people do not generally like tiered stages. Because even if it is a small complaint; it is still a complaint.
Again this is completely off-topic. PM me if you want to discuss it…don’t pollute the thread.
Well…its a topic about a shitty game so no-one’s losing out.
But yeah, can’t believe this guy necro posted just to do thread derailment.
Tech Romancer:
> COTA wasn’t a 3D fighter. I believe the point was the first THREE DIMENSIONAL fighter that had multi-tiered stages.
I was responding to when Black Shroud said this:
COTA did it first.
> Besides COTA’s leveled stages didn’t affect you really, besides a change of scenery.
Er, so? MK3’s multi-tier stages were only accessible by uppercutting your opponent through the roof. COTA’s muti-tiered stages were only available by inflicting enough damage that the floor gave way (Spiral stage). What’s the difference?
> And SS64 is fine; don’t dare lump it with SS3. Just not your type of game.
SS64, besides an ugly, ungainly mess to look at and having awful systems (whoever thought of the stamina bar needs to be shot), has possibly the worst hit detection I’ve ever encountered in a fighting game. I knew it was time to call it quits when Kazuki’s explosion super hit me when I was standing a whole two inches away from the blast field.
I thought the hit detection and graphics were just fine.
Stamina bar was the way to reward the defensively playing players (if you play rushdown you are rewarded wth, well, damaging your opponent; if you play turtle you are rewarded with having more stamina), and also to enforce 2D aspect of the game (since you have more stamina when you play it without sidestepping, and if you decide to sidestep a projectile - for example - you pay for it with stamina).
SS5, SS5sp, SS6 too reward the defensively playing players, only Sword Gauge does it instead of Stamina Gauge, and bonus is a damage bonus.
The idea is the same in SS64, SS5/sp/6 - as character attacks he gets tired, so choose what and when to do wisely. Because of that those games are more defensive/tactical, compared to, lets say, SS4 which is rushdown-based game.
SSAZ (SS64_2) is by all means spiritual successor of SS4, and it is a game that rewards rushdown, but persecutes defensive play and runaway (you cant even backdash 2 times in a row since you will trip and fall down being vulnerable)
I just checked this out. Good for XSEED for stepping up to the plate for Sen’s release.
When I heard that HNG64 emulation getting alot better, I just had to check this out. I’ve read that you need to patch the first source code to display the 3D graphics for the Samsho titles for the HNG64. However, I have no how I do that. If anyone knows how to do this for a Windows platform, please email me what to do at chikarazero@aol.com (or a link if that is allowed). I’d appreciate it very much.
Back on topic. So it seems that SSSen is getting a bad rep. I’ll definitely will play this when I get the chance. All I need to know is it going to be released for the PS3 in any form?
