Samurai Shodown Sen aka Edge of Destiny

Looks like it’s X-Box exclusive? Why?

Anyways:

Nope. Pretty much can’t even find it anymore. It’s super fast and feels kind of random and mashy, so that kind of takes away the appeal, especially when you’re expecting, you know, samurai shodown.

bill gates owns the world

BlackShroud, those Galford videos you posted…man, is there anyway I can get ahold of those SamSho games? Man I love that move galford did at 2:01-2:09 it’s the Galford vs Hanzo. (both Raetsu)

Video narrator guy: "… But what you’re about to see is not going to be pretty."
Me: “No kidding.”

It’s probably Xbox exclusive because SNK has had better relations with Microsoft in the past and currently. Also, SNK’s trying to sell copies of the game… why would they release it on the PS3?

Double post

Black Shroud, I cannot believe you’d post videos of SS64-2 and not post a video featuring my epic namesake, Gandara:

Want to buy Gandara as a sub-boss in SS Sen. Seriously, THAT’S a sub-boss!

For now we can only hope for further progress of MAME team in decrypting HNG64 (now its only partially decrypted). I also heard SNK lost source codes to SS64/SSAZ games, but now for some reason decided to go 3D with shitty gameplay instead of going 3D with SSAZ gameplay again.

This game is a joke in japan, basically. Few of japanese I know play the game, but even they say that they are considered to be “weird japanese” for playing that game, and they play it just for sake of SS label and characters in it. On other hand, SS64 and SSAZ still get tourneys, albeit not on so big scale like modern fightings. Sen is just a badly put together mashfest comboed into jugglefest

For now the only way is to buy a HNG64 board and games somewhere on eBay or amazon, then plug them into arcade machine or supergun and play it at home. Roms of SS64/SSAZ games do exist but they arent emulated fully yet. No console ports of games were made too.

Ahem, I already posted that people can just go to http://www.samurai-shodown.com and watch there SSAZ videos to their heart’s content, and no Im not gonna post all 300+ video links here on SRK because it will make no sense; and also there are so much gandara videos on http://www.samurai-shodown.com that one can get bored from watching him

Didn’t they had the development of Samurai Spirits Sen to the guys that make Tenchu or something. Like it’s basically a SNK game only through name association. (Last game they actually worked on was the original Sam Sho 5 right?, correct me if I’m wrong)

They were in team at times of SS3, maybe earlier too, and were known as “Team Garapagos” (yes with R), then that team moved on and started to make Tenchu games, and became known as “K2” instead, and now they developed Sen as K2.
There was also a rumor for quite awhile that when that team developed SS3, they wanted to make it a perfect fencing simulator while dumping non-fencing stuff, but they were stopped from that by SNK who wanted to preserve gameplay elements that SS series were known by, too. If thats the case, it seems Sen was their new take in that direction and they successfully dumped most of stuff that isnt mindless sword swinging, from game

Sen made by the team that made SS3 (I refuse to believe the same team that made the brilliant SS2 also made the abominable SS3)? That explains a lot. >:|

SSSen was pretty much destined (no pun intended) to be garbage, because “3D” (gameplay, not necessarily graphics) + “Samurai Shodown” don’t mix. The fact that they made a boring Tekken/SC ripoff in the process and removed everything remotely identifyable as SS only makes it worse.

Why not just give this game a chance as its own game, and not necessarily a successor to the previous games, which are at a dead end anyways? SSVI had everything from the previous games, all at once, they couldn’t have topped that. The new-style Samsho peaked at Special anyways. They just need to make it good (though I heard they didn’t)

It makes sense to move the series in an all new direction- given the popularity of the characters, and the fact that you can’t really build on the old series anymore.

I’m kinda surprised SNK didn’t pull a GG2: Overture or a non-fighting game with the chars to be honest- that would have made good business sense (though we would have shit all over it)

Description: Here’s an interview with Shane Bettenhausen, Director of New Business Development at Ignition Entertainment. It’s his honor to fill you in on the latest iteration of the Samurai Shodown series - Edge of Destiny.

Summary: “Cool, the game doesnt carries on storyline of previous games! Wow, this game now is in full 3D! Wow characters have weapons (and different ones at that!). Woww, you can kill opponent at the end of match! … and some chars even have projectiles!”

My comment: Storylines of all the previous SS games were better than this new Lesbia…erm…Lesphica Kingdom popping up from nowhere, with boss looking like marching band director. Previous SS games that used 3D graphics had far and beyond better gameplay then Sen. Characters always had weapons and always different at that. You could kill opponent at the end of match in nearly every samsho started from SS1. And SS series had perphaps the biggest variety of special move types in fighting game genre, and these are now reduced almost to nothing. Few projectiles, pff. Author looks like he never played samsho games (I dont even say was an SS fan) before. Interview is pretty weak and they probably think everyone will just jump at the game because violence was made a central gimmick…

@ Arstal - you would be right, probably, but taken that SNK didnt ported two of its previous 3D titles that had better gameplay would make one suggest that they should use the new 3D installment as a way to bring back that good gameplay and at least allow everyone to play SS game of good quality in 3D. Now they drop the ball, copy Namco and waste millions of polygons on underhanded gameplay that is mostly liked by prepaid reviewers, and that is very sad

This topic only makes me want to try SS64-2 more and SS Sen even less.

But yeah…you’re right, SamSho is pretty much at a dead end now. If they want to continue the series, they should start thinking outside the box…maybe a Tenchu-style action game starring Hanzo/Jubei/Haohmaru, or an action RPG (as far as I know, the original SSRPG wasn’t that big of a hit was it? And that was back in the prime of SS2 when SS’s popularity was at its peak).

Why they wont do with SS same that, to say SF4 did with SF2? Because its basically SF2 cast in 3D graphics with extra characters/gimmicks. And storyline shouldnt be done in traditional way, i.e. they can pull a sword master mode from SC, in a sense of text parts of story being mixed with actual fights, and those can take place here and there on main storyline.
Not to mention SS6 storyline was good while being uncanon, i e it shown right how respective characters would behave in said setting, which wasnt part of canon storyline.
Basically what we fans want is to have cast of cool characters, mostly made of fan favourites, with cool dark setting and this special kind of SS music that makes use of silence and traditional japanese instruments to make certain atmosphere, and also good voice acting, all this being backed with wide range of special moves allowing great variety of gameplay situations, cool supers, and also some balance in gameplay and blood and slicing in two being present as always. I dont mention storyline because for some people its optional, for me it allows to “feel” characters and their personalities better.
Now why SNK chose to dont make such a game, but making weird knack at Namco is beyond me. I mean now that they created high-polygonal realistic Sogetsu model, how hard it was to give him his water bubble and water fountain in same realstic graphics? Its not even a case of their move being financially motivated, because Sen (as it is now) blew in Japan and is ignored there for most part, and I doubt console version will have enough extras to make up for that

well they did start another venture called “Samurai Spirits Online” but i don’t know what ever happened to that.

The boss- like Amakusa, was based on a historical figure- in this case Simon Bolivar- the George Washington of South America. They had Andrew Jackson in Tenka, and Bolivar’s around the same timeframe.

As I said, this game has to be judged on its own merits, and not the previous games, many of which were substandard (really, only II and Speical stand the test of time) I’m going to be fair to this game- if it stinks, it stinks, if it’s good, it’s good.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the earlier 3D games ported, but SNK can’t really- apparently they don’t own the source code to HNG games- maybe they can find the ROMs online or something.

As for Samsho- I really think they’d be better off making the series into an RPG or Action game. As a fighter it’s pretty much branched to its conclusion. As much as I hated Last Blade, if they were going to make a weapon-based fighter- a LB3 would be a better choice- as there is plenty to fix and improve in that.

You can’t fault Shane for knowing his audience…which is the AMERICAN video game audience. A.K.A. the place where MK games selling millions of copies.
So, yes, he’s going to focus on the blood, the 3D graphics, and weapons, and stuff.

Its an MMORPG where you create own character, but apparently you can use other SS characters’ clothes elements during that. No gameplay videos were yet released

Well, Tenka didnt had actual timeframe, being a dream-match installment, and year of Tenka’s Imperial Tourney was never specified. How about Golba being based on General Donald Morgen (antagonist from Metal Slug series) instead of Simon Bolivar? Especially that SNK wikia states that, while I saw Bolivar reference in your post for first time.

Sen was released more than a year ago - in Japan; and it already failed test of time pretty much

If they lost source codes they could just make the re-release (like Tekken Tag was to Tekken 3) of SSAZ with those graphics that Sen uses now and additional characters.

Umm, how it could reach conclusion before reaching its peak? SS2 being nowadays the game with simplistic gameplay, and SS5sp suffering from somewhat bland graphics and cuts in animation frames and voice clips, SS6 suffering from it samurai spirit being totally destroyed, and SSAZ being basically unplayable yet?

I always personally thought that SS’s simplicity was always it’s strongest aspect. Sometimes u don’t need the clutter of so many varying sub-systems to make a game exciting or innovative…sometimes the simpliest and most practical approach cnd eventually prove to be the best course. IMO, SNK should just use SS2 as a base and build upon it in the same way Capcom did with SF4. Now granted, SF4 failed terribly in that regard IMO but the same basic philosphy applies…go with what works and build on that and plz don’t try to reinvent the wheel.

The reason Samsho reached its conclusion was that unlike KOF, they didn’t leave anyone from anywhere out. To make a new game in that vein, they had to cut out a lot and rebuild. Simply put if you show everything, you can’t top that. It’s like how you’re going to pose nude in Playboy, if you try to top that, it’s just not going to work. They HAD to revamp the series drastically. Even SF4- there was still plenty that could be done. If 3S had included all the alpha chars and SF2 chars, then it would have been harder.

The only way a 2d Samsho could work is if they took the KOFXII approach, and quite honestly, it’s a lot safer to do that with a series that is still popular such as KOF or even FF (I do think KOFXII engine should have been used for a FF game instead, then make KOFXII as the 2nd game).
