OK. I meant human vs human matches. So he isn’t normally playable? Dang. Wanted to use him.
He is a sub-boss and can fire series of unblockable bullets while other characters dont have even blockable projectiles. Im sure it will be fun playing against him online if they will make bosses playable in console version
black shroud,
i appreciate your love of the series!
I bought a NEOGEO cart 10+ years ago to enjoy samurai shodown 2, still one of my two most cherished fighting games (darkstalkers ties).
the slow poking or super hard slashing with occasional 2in1 combos and FLASHY special moves, all done with VIBRANT colors, made old ss art in motion!
i think SNK realizes this now, seeing KOF XII in completion. Heck, even SFIV shows that you can be lazy with 3D models and still have that old gameplay.
here’s to hoping SNK does not base it’s future decision on how well this new 3D ss does.
**asura does keep the flare of ss i think, just the graphics are pretty old
hey shroud,
do you know if ss asura has fatalities or stunt moves? i have seen videos of the first ss 64 having them.
would love some videos of asura’s stunts.
thanks!
I’m personally looking forward to this game. I just wanna play with the afro samurai dude, he looks badass.
SSAZ has finishers with slice in half, slice arm off, and with blood spray I think; arm slice being the new one (and its carried over to Sen/Edge of Destiny)
By stunt moves you mean moves that cause stun? Or just “free hit” moves like, dunno, Rimururu’s Ice Puddle? The stun mechanics in SSAZ are, if you do a counterhit with physical attack (punch or kick but not weapon attack), opponent will slowly collapse and fall down (imagine a hit in the solar plexus), before he completely falls he can be hit though, so you can combo from such counterhit. Also, if counterhit is an overhead-hitting attack, it will smash opponent into ground with force and he will bounce from it one time (again open for hit for that time) before completely falling to ground.
About free hit moves, there are alot of them I guess (in same fashion as in 2D games), Hanmen no Asura’s leahciM, Galford’s Machine Gun Dog (I think), Genjuro’s Sake Cup Breaker and Sake Cup Smasher command grabs (free hit after them), Hanma’s Hurl Up and Centrifugal Grab (if you dont follow them with followup grabs), Hanzo’s Exploding Dragon (juggles same as in SS4), Haohmaru’s Whirlwinds (free juggle hit like in SS4), Enja’s Burning Hot Hell, Nakoruru’s hawk-sending moves, Rimururu’s Ice Puddle and some other freeze moves, Sogetsu’s Rising Moon (water bubble), Suija’s Water Moon (exploding water sphere), Taizan’s Law of Kanji Seal: “Wind” (Haohmaru whirlwind); and also Rasetsu Taizan has moves that seal opponent’s special moves and throws, mix his directions or buttons; dunno if that counts.
About J. (afro samurai dude), his gimmick seems to be his weird “Upper Side Hold” stance where he sticks sword in the ground and stands in somewhat crippled position, I think it has several followups, one of them is where he twirls in air causing sword to go into steel spring-like position before releasing it from ground, which enhances following slash attack power. Also, his official nickname by SNK is “Samurai of thundercloud”, I wonder if that refers to his hairdo…
Im liking Sen till now. Dont know why.
Oh boi!
Tekken Shodown Edge of Fail!
…
I find it ridiculous we haven’t gotten ports of the 64 titles yet. Even if they supposedly lost the programming data, I see no reason why they can’t just find a cab/rom around somewhere and re-port it.
Oh, didn’t know about the unblockable shots. The military rapier guy isn’t broken though right? If he is then I’ll try out the Latin rapier guy.
Isn’t that SamSho 64? Because if that is, man that brings back good memories. Don’t remember much of it, but it had a cult following in Puerto Rico.
whoa, i had no idea about this game. thanks for the post!
That is Samurai Spirits 2 Asura Zanmaden (translation: Samurai Spirits 2: Asura Slashing Demon Legend), which had “Samurai Shodown 64 Warriors Rage” in its title for english version. It still has tournaments going in Japan and has somewhat a cult following too (even though its somewhat rare) because its one of SS games with least flaws, where SNK managed to do everything right. It is the sequel of original Samurai Shodown 64 which was too for Hyper Neo-Geo 64 arcade platform but had more free 3D roaming and multi-tiered arenas done in full 3D.
Sometimes people refer to both SS64 and SSAZ as “the SS64 games” since they were released on HNG64 platform, you can also see SSAZ called SS64_2 or in similar fashion.
Basically.
SS1 = first game in series
SS2 = sequel to SS1
SS3 & SS4 = interquel, happen between SS1 and SS2
SS64 = direct sequel to SS2, you can see some videos of it on this page. The game has free 3D roaming, multi-tiered arenas and “stamina” gauge on which part of player’s actions feed to be executed.

SSAZ = direct sequel to SS64, can be described best as SS4 in 3D. Overseas name is “warriors rage”. This is the best of the three 3D SS games released in 90’s. It has smart damage system (attack’s basic damage level + damage revision modifier + body part modifier + deepness of cut modifier). Canonically, Ukyo and Genjuro die during events of this game. Videos from it I already posted (you can see them quoted above), you can access more through videos section of http://www.samurai-shodown.com
SS:Shinsho = direct sequel to SSAZ taking place 20 years ahead (a “Garou” game of SS series), this is PSX 3D SS game with old Haohmaru with a beard. Overseas name is “warriors rage” too, hence the frequent confusion
SS5 = prequel to SS1. This is not a sequel to any game
SS5sp and SS6 = uncanon dream-match installments
SS:Sen = seems to follow different storyline branch, and there are almost no connections to main SS storyline. Judging from date of events, it would take place after SSAZ but before SS:Shinsho.
About SS:Sen / EoD, you can read feedback of few people who actually played it, here:

Another trailer for those who haven’t seen…hope it’s not old

Is this game getting a NA release? Also I’m going to try this game out, looks like Tekken but has some Soul Calibur mixed into it,too which makes me even more interested in it.
Interesting, Im gonna add that to my SS notes, and it will then appear on site in J’s section. I havent acquainted myself with Shigurui yet (though I must because I heard of it).
Sorry but it seems this game is a bigger flop than Capcom Fighting Jam. Im not gonna repeat points about the game which were already repeated alot, I will just point you there

to read feedback from people who actually played the game. Yes it actually looks like a SNK’s bad attempt to make Namco-like game instead of good Namco one or good SNK one.
Yeah, that trailer was for the NA release. Interesting thing, though…the trailer only discusses X-box version…
That SS64 looks pretty solid, wish the virtual console would ge tit or something.
If my xbox isnt broken i will be in top 10 when this game drops…Just calling it now. It looks really bad from all the gameplay i have seen. But deep in the game i see it has some potential for fun.
oodles of kudos
mike
for the record, shigurui is BADAZZ.
…and i’m still going to buy this game even if it sucks
EDIT: is this game still played competitively in japan?
