Samurai Shodown Anthology

well it’s mostly trivial but i liked some of the character stances and the slightly cartoonier look the first game had. the second game looks almost identical but they overloaded it with a bunch of evasive options that i barely used. it was super risky to use them except for the :df::df: forward roll that would go under some projectiles and high attacks.

i’m not arguing that the second game isn’t better overall because it is. as retarded as this is going to sound, i just liked the aesthetics in the first game better overall. maybe it has more to do with nostalgia than anything else.

SS1 Hanzo stage/stage music > SS2 Hanzo stage/stage music. I have no clue why they decided to change it in SS2.

Does this thread ever have like, match videos or strategies? I just see a bunch of people bitching about which game is better, which is irrelevant when the collection has all the fucking games on it. Seriously, this is one of the most useless games threads here with the lack of information later on.

Edit: Specifically can I get a comparison on SS5 SP and SS6, as well as match/tournament videos of each. Also a basic move list for SS2 would be appreciated.

Thank you very much Black Shroud, the help is appreciated.

agreed, but i been posting info so i will answer your questions. I cant find anywhere that i can watch ss6 sbo. does any one know somewhere i can watch it?

ss5sp is about poking and timming, ss6 is about overwhelming offense and get up game. But dont get me wrong both games are pretty alike. The first samurai shodown i played seriously was ss5zero and then ss5sp and then ss6. So i feel like a have a good prespective on the question.

all rimsiz matches are tournament matches.

mauve has a whole achocup tournament on his youtube, one of my favorites:)

  1. Game is pretty trash compared to SS games now. People keep trying to hide bad play mechanics behind nostalgia and “Skill”. It has nothing to do with skill in the game as I win more than the people I’m talking about that I play with. The game as a whole is over and done. As time went on, poking like a fucking retard became more of a burden when the sword gauge was put into play but I guess you like mashing buttons to get a hit out?

And the way you go into rage was so fucking stupid and annoying(For the one who went into it/and the opponent) as it messes up vital points of retaliation most of the time. Pretty much the one of the reasons I have a love/hate relationship with Halfmoon in MeltyBlood AA.

  1. Running throws have a missed animation which you can punish in later games to make them learn not to do it so much so that’s a moot point and like you told me"Your own fault"if you get killed like that.

  2. I know you still play SF 2 because most people who play that to this day still think SamSho 2 is acceptable as the best SamSho because they have a lot in common.

Moral of the story is: Play your game and I’ll play mine.

@At ARE YOU OKAY: They did shitloads of writeups on characters in this thread if you cared to look for them. This arguing shit only happened when someone came in didn’t like the fact that people don’t hold 2 as sacred anymore.

You and Black Shroud do a lot for this thread, and I really enjoy the information you two have compiled together. It just get easily lost in all the other crap.

First for me was SamSho, but first competitive I guess would be the SamSho II I got for Live. Poke fests aren’t bad, but I like combo centric games. Both 5 SP and 6 appeal to me on a visual level and from the gameplay I’ve been watching they are both good in their own right.

having a million little systems in place for every new samsho game doesn’t necessarily make it better or more interesting than older games. and just because you don’t like ss2 doesn’t make it trash. for me, it’s the simplicity of the older games that actually made them more fun and less niche and so more people played them.

So you’re admitting that nostalgia/simplicity is the only reason you play it?

Maybe trash is too strong of a word, I’ll admit that. But it get’s me kinda pissed when someone can denounce a game for getting more different/technical as it went on. But just calling it the best(Without provocation) in front of people who you know have problems with it in general is just asking for good old fashioned SRK stupidity.

People who say KOF 98 is the best 99% of the time have no idea why they think that other than someone told them rather than play it indepth to see if they think that themselves. I treat a lot of SamSho 2 people like that too because they feel the need to throw it in your face when you talk about SamSho.

Nobody said anything bad about SamSho 2 until certain people felt the need to force their opinion on us.

Last thing we were talking about before the Samsho 2 defense/offense force showed up was SS642 being emu’d to a playable point.

yo! i can’t send pms because i have no posts, but… wanna play this online sometime? 2df or whatever mame version is fine

i like a lot of chars… jubei and basara are very fun
decent with sogetsu, charlotte, tam tam, haohmaru.

i am maybe a 7.5/10 player?

nope. i also play it because it’s fun. i rarely play any samsho games anymore but the one i have the most FUN with is 1 and 2. i like the other samsho games as well but not as much as i do the first two. when my friends come over and we play this we end up playing the first two games anyways. you know why? because they play the new games the same way they played the first two. they don’t take advantage of the new sub systems anyways and they don’t care to.

in my opinion the newer ss games have gotten overly complicated to cater to a niche audience and they end up becoming less and less popular. can’t blame them, why make the same game over and over again? but it’s a double edged sword since you lose some of the old school fans and general players.

You’re saying that like players of the series after 2 aren’t considered the old guard now. We get hate just for playing the games past the expected expiration date.

I’m like “fuck them, I’ll play my shit and respect yours if you do the same”, but it doesn’t work like that these days so somebody’s got to have the balls to say something towards people like that.

Do you know where I can find SS64-2 matches played at above decent level?

I’m so fascinated by it but I never get a chance to play it. It came out at the time of decline to like Garou to some extent…

Also sirorim youtube channel.

I hope they will emulate 3D part of game somewhat soon, 2D stuff in it already works on MAME but no visible character models

I wasn’t championing SS3. I said “SS3 wasn’t something I’d be serious on, but it could be entertaining in a mindless way” in response to a claim that it sucked. That isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement of quality. The game was badly broken, but it could be fun to mess around with when neither player was really serious.

I would say that SS3 was flawed all the way to its concept, with SNK trying to make a game with more mass appeal. I hated some of the changes introduced in SS3, and feel that some of those changes weakened everything that followed.

SS2 isn’t perfect, either. I’m not championing it as the paragon of gaming. My posting started when m216xlegendx made a blanket statement that if you like Samurai Shodown then you will like SS6. That isn’t true for everyone. m216xlegendx and I are different people. He came in on the later games, likes them, and likes the similar 6. I came in from the first game and found myself often disappointed by where SNK would later take the series (from 3 onwards).

SS6 may be a decent game, but that isn’t really the point. The point is that it isn’t SamSho anymore to me. It is another game with the same characters, and a somewhat bland one for all its content. Indeed, some of the generic feel is in part due to all its content, with its kitchen sink approach to design and the nods to past incarnations present being only a thin veneer. (Which I think is enough to warrant the MUGEN comparison versus the CvS2 comparison.)

I’ve played since 1 also but I feel the game got better as it went along as the game got more in depth and intricate.

I don’t know exactly why you hate the games that followed 2 so much but I’ll take a stab at it…

Comparing Tenka to Mugen or CvS is bad because both of those have HUGE problems that are readily pointed out. The only thing Tenka has in common with CvS or Mugen is the fact of trying to bring many games together on one plane…which CvS horribly failed at and Mugen was exploited to destroy any sort of balance that could have arose.

Tenka did what most VS games can only DREAM of: Get as close as possible to total balance without taking a major shit on any particular character/game system. All spirits are usealbe in some way, form, or fashion with all of the non-joke characters.

Now we couldn’t have the high ass damage for obvious reasons, but they got most of what made SamSho special and unique from other games right for the most part. They even went out of thier way to put dolls and shit back in the game…don’t they deserve a little bit of credit? They still cared enough to give 1 and 2 fans A LOT of fanservice.

every samurai shodown game after ss1 and ss2 have a totally different feel. You sound like some one who wants a ss2 HD. SS6 wasnt gona be like ss2, ss3 wasnt like ss2. ss4 wasnt like ss5. ss5 isnt like ss6. The game changes everytime.

You seem like someone who hasnt even given ss6 a chance. you just look at it and say"well it doesnt feel like samurai shodown" because its not like ss2. Any one can have thier own opinion. And i respect that , but your only reason for not liking ss6 doesnt make sense. you just seem like you dont like samurai shodown (accept for ss2).

when SF3 came out poeple didnt say "this doesnt feel like sf2 , its lost all its roots ,it sucks. Poeple gave Sf3 a chance and ended up loving it.

I think a big problem with samurai shodown in usa is competition. If there was more good competition out there poeple could really see how the system works for the later ss games. But since there isnt you have abunch of poeple who just play samurai shodown alone . No 2p fighting game is fun to play alone, and even if you dont play alone its not like you have aton of poeple that want to play samurai shodown. And none of them would be good at samsho anyways. So thats what i think you real problem is. Poeple try to play ss6 and suck, and then say the game sucks. Anyways samsho has not been like ss2 since 1993  Its always changing giving you different gameplay almost everytime.

So which one is ‘better’ Warriors Rage 2 or Sen lol.

I wish 5SP comes to GGPO tbh.
