Heaven forbid they change up the system a bit to add variety. And if you want throwback 5sp is directly lifted from SSII so there’s no problem. Only thing is they omit Sieger, Cham Cham, The green guy (forgot this name) and earthquake.
Cham Cham is included as cameo in Tam Tam’s fatality in SS5sp, and Kuroko as stage cameo. And yes SS5/sp dodge system and lack of dial-a-combos and comboable grabs are direct throwbacks to SS2
Silly gimmick systems that get in the way of 2’s pacing. The control system is terrible too.
Don’t get me wrong, 5sp is a decent game, but not on 2’s level. And it’s decent because they borrowed a lot from 2. Sadly every new idea they tried was subpar.
I was 8 or 9 y/o when SS2 came out and I probably didn’t have a console to use it for, if it even was available.
I’m playing anthology these days and I really got stuck at SSVI.
Too much stuff there for me to go back in time to SS2.
I really like SSVI, is there a major difference worth playing SS2 for?
Part 6 is already overwhelming enough I think.
The controls had SS 2 in mind so if they’re bad, then blame SS 2. I honestly can’t stand having to press two buttons just for a regular slash. SS 3 to 4 had the control scheme just right, as evidenced by them going back to it for 6. And as far as how the two games control overall, SS 3 and up doesn’t feel like I’m playing underwater. Every move comes out when I want it to.
I don’t know what gimmicky systems you’re talking about but if it’s null state, then it was perfect for a game like that. It was a comeback mechanic that actually used a bit of brain power to use, unlike SS 2 where just slashing someone at the right time would take 60% of their life AND dizzy them, which was just stupid.
And SS pacing has always been the same. Slow.
SS 3 and up decided to make the game more serious too. SS 2 was a very goofy game in terms of looks and dialogue. A much needed change because I don’t want to see a SS that looks and plays like SF4, currently the most goofy game on the market.
@Son of a Gun: There is no reason to go back to 2 when you’ve played and liked 6. Mostly everything 2 does well is in 6 too and done 100 times better. The only thing 2 has over 6 is atmosphere.
What’s this about 60% life and a dizzy off one slash? Does anyone halfway competent ever get hit with that? You have to mess up BAD to get hit like that. It’s like getting hit with Guile’s 4-hit sonic boom touch of death combo in Street Fighter II: it’ll never happen in a real match.
I do agree that the null state is very cool and that two buttons for a hard attack is lame, though.
Maybe it’s just a question of taste, but I can’t even play Samurai Shodown VI. It doesn’t appeal to me at all.
That was one of the STUPIDEST things I’ve heard in a while…That’s like saying “No one should be hit by a jumping fierce or roundhouse”. Getting hit by a hard slash is easier than you think in SS2. Hell, a lot of the time, you don’t even need hard slash to get someone dizzy in a few hits.
Anyways i seem to recall 2 being absoutely controlled by ukyo. Still a fun game, and something i’ll probably need to find a way to run(I actually own a copy of the PC version) but I prefered 5sp. I’d probably put it a little above IV.
You not only have to get hit by a hard slash, but counter-hitted out of specific attacks like the early parts of a special move to get the 60% damage. Random hard slashes don’t do 60% damage and they sure don’t dizzy in one hit. Get hit with a hard slash while in a neutral position. You probably will only take about 20-30% damage. (MAYBE 40%, for some characters.) Hard slash a dizzied opponent. You’ll NEVER get a bunch of damage. There is a rhyme and reason to how it works. And if you take that hard slash, this is one of the easiest games in the world to turtle in. You can just play it safe for a little while and you’re very safe from stun damage. Almost every character’s hard slash is too slow to be useful in most situations, too.
I say again, if you take 60% damage and get stunned in one hit in Samurai Shodown II, it’s because you messed up bad and paid the price. And yeah, in Street Fighter II at least, getting hit by a jumping fierce or roundhouse is an indicator that you messed up badly. These old games had high damage because they wanted you to pay when you messed up. It’s fine to not like it, but arguing that this stuff happens in real matches between able players is just silly.
Who said anything about two button hard slashes being good in Samurai Shodown II but bad in V Special?
People blinded by nostalgia earlier in this thread.
I mean, its really easy to pick out who actually played the games and who’s just jumping on the SSII bandwagon. Not saying that people can’t like SSII more or anything (although I honestly can’t see how unless you are a huge fan of the characters that didn’t make it to SS0) but despite the changes made to the later games, the core system has always been present.
You don’t have to be hit with a counter hit, son. Try fucking up the triple slice with Genjuro, that’s NOT a counter hit at all. Better yet, try just JUMPING at a raged Sieger, they’ll instinctively close HS you on the way down and damn near dizzy/kill you. Don’t tell me you shouldn’t jump in this game because that would automatically make this game even more redundant.
You are talking about AFTER the dizzy, but what you fail to realize is that the dizzy is uncalled for after the person has already been treated to half+ of their life stripped away. It shouldn’t happen in the first place.
And I’m pretty certain you have no idea what you’re talking about on the SF2 front. Not only can a good Guile hit you with a jumping fierce or roundhouse into that one combo, but it can be done with ANY jumping attack, not just a fierce or roundhouse. All he would have to do is modify the combo by just a little. Trust me, I played him in SF 2/Championship Edition and got into real life fights over that particular setup.
Why don’t you give me, and some other people, some reasons to play SS2 over 5sp and 6. I’m all ears.
Am i the only one that finds disturbing how some people only talk about one series - ever? The next level would be people that have a character in their avatars and only talk about said character.
SRK seems to be filled with both kind of psychos, which is just disturbing.
you know whats even funnier, some people here think that if you like ss2 you must not have played ss games after 4. some just dont get it, when you play a game and its soo shit you give up on it in 1 or 2 days in hope to forget EVERYTHING bout said game. this is basically the story for any SS game after 4, their all shit. some like it, but then again some like a dick up their ass as well. whichever is your cup of tea, enjoy it. for me, ss is a dead series. theres a reason why it went from a game played by millions to a game played by, 100 people worldwide?
You take extra damage while jumping, and while recovering from special attacks. In Samurai Shodown 2 those are counter attacks. Don’t jump at Seiger when he’s raged, unless you’re going to do a move that beats his close fierce. If you do that, you made a huge error in judgement and deserve every bit of damage you get, including the follow-up to the dizzy. Instead of crying about how unfair it is, you should try getting better at the game.
And not to crap this thread up with SF2 stuff, but no, if you’re any good at the game, Guile is never going to hit you with a jumping attack, unless you’re already dizzied. His jumping attacks can usually be defeated by normals, and his jump is so slow that if you don’t think you can beat his attack, you have all the time in the world to just block. But enough about SF2.
Shishioh, you know what? Don’t play Samurai Shodown 2. Under no circumstances should you play Samurai Shodown 2. You don’t like it. Play a game you like. I don’t want to convince you to like Samurai Shodown 2. The people who do play it play it because they like it better than the others. I like the fact that if my opponent makes a completely idiotic mistake, I can do crazy damage to him. Samurai Shodown 1 and 2 took risk-vs-reward to its pinnacle. Some people like that. If you don’t like it, fine, but why does it bother you so much that other people enjoy it?
TLDR…So I picked the most relevant part of it out.
Because SS2 fanboys always come into a SS thread and fuck it up for everyone with their retarded delusions of superiority over other SS fans. Case fucking closed.
We didn’t have any of that shit before they rolled up into the other thread with that mess.
Until then, I’ll just keep punching holes in the game.
