And they aren’t the 2nd best anti-airs in the game, Sagat’s st.HK for example is much better than it because it beats out most things in the air or trades into ex tiger/ultra.
Anything that can trade into ultra is pretty much a better anti-air than things that cannot because it is more likely to deter them from jumping.
Chun for example has pretty good anti-airs against most characters, you just need to know which ones to use in what matchups.
The problem is that her anti-airs do little damage compared to the rest of the cast so even if she hits someone out of the air 3 times they’ll still go for the 4th and 5th because they don’t get punished hard enough on each try.
I’m not saying Sakura needs better anti-airs, all I’m saying is that it’s not the 2nd best in the game.
And no, she does not need a SRK, but for other reasons than as an anti air.
Less characters in this game need multi-purpose shoryukens, not more.
Capcom should have made it that Sakura had failed multiple years due to her obsession with fighting and her prioritizing training over her school work. She is already a fairly comical character and that story would have justified her school uniform. Or they could just switch her alternate costume with her main… I personally thought her alt was fantastic…

Having a title “High School Girl” kinda implies she’s, you know, still in high school but it matters not. As long as she’s in the game that’s all I care about
im down for a more of an srk for the lp version. as of now we have no reversal or moves with armor so when we are put under a solid block string there is little to nothing sak can do.
She may very well be in high school still, but she’s in her 20’s regardless.
In the video she sort of implies that she was going to have difficulty graduating on time, presumably because of her fighting career. And when the interviewer asks “are you REALLY in high school?”, she sort of has a hard time answering.
She was 16 in Alpha 3, and SF4 takes place way after that.
EDIT: Regardless, I’ll still be using her in SSF4. I just hope she’s still fun to use, and not turned into easy mode…
Maybe there is no cannon reason that actually makes sense, and they just just felt that a Sakura who isn’t in a school uniform isn’t Sakura, and screw the story/timeline? That’s pretty much what the developers said.

Sakura is a fighting school girl, that is all you need to know.

Edit: I’m so tired of hearing from Sakura players “Sakura shouldn’t have a good fireball because she’s not perfected her fireball”, “Sakura shouldn’t this and that”.
Seriously, don’t bring that kind of crap into balancing because it has nothing to do with it.
In a game it’s more fun to play a character that has several good options than bad options, this is a fact.
Giving a character bad options on purpose to fulfil some stupid wish crazed fans have is not a good idea.
Dan is a creation like that, he’s meant to be a crap character in any game he appears in, which is stupid.
I need to be vocal about this because for some reason out of all the character forums I’ve visited the Sakura one is one of those which has embraced the whole thought of brining canon into balance.
I’m not saying all Sakura players are like that, I’m just saying there are too many.
And on my scale one person like that is too many.
Just because some of us don’t ride the “Durhur I want to make my character OP’d” stick (not saying that you do, as you actually have a brain) doesn’t mean we don’t want the character to be stronger. She’s not supposed to be super strong, so by design her moves will inevitably be weaker.
I honestly don’t want Sakura with a great fireball, a shoryuken-like shouoken, 200 stun on her HP + whatever other ridiculous suggestions have shown up here. if I did I’d play Ryu.
Ever notice how every, “buff this character” thread ends up turning into a, “make my character Ryu” thread.
That’s actually one thing I like about this thread, a great majority of us have accepted our character’s faults for what they are and are willing to play a different character then Ryu, Ken, Vinny, ect.
Even so, an improved Sakura for Super would be nice, I’m not a fan of “Round One, Fight! Now you’re pretty much screwed, deal with it.”
this is my thinking, its been four years since alpha right according to age. do you people not think she would have mastered some things by then? really? you dont think she could throw a formidable hadouken. i bet it didnt take ryu or ken half that long. i would like to play a sakura that as achieved her goal and as mastered her fight style. and as a 20 year old she should be close to it
I think you’re missing the point. Skatan is saying we should forget about that bolded part of your post if the only reason we’re saying that is because of story reasons. She should be balanced with the rest of the cast, not more gimped because she’s themed a school girl.
Yeah forgot about Rog, but what anti-airs of Chun are you talking about? Based on your description it can’t be j.HK, s.HK or EX SBK.
Can’t say I agree with you on Sagat’s st.HK. Angle just isn’t right to use as anti-air, especially considering the cyclop can (kara-) TU at will. You just don’t randomly jump in on a full-Revenge Sagat within TU, kara TU, f.HK or Ultra range. Sakura’s c.HP has the perfect angle and hits very late.
On your other point though, yes I agree, don’t think ‘it’s a schoolgirl, she can’t be top tier’. Check her Alpha 3/CVS2 status. Canon in tier lists are dumb. However, and this is mentioned before, some want Sakura to turn into Ryu (look at it: upwards Shou with invicibility frames, cross-up air-Tatsu, Ryu-like fireball), and those people should just play the man himself instead of thinking ‘lol she’s cute i’ll main her but i want her to be just as good, no, identical to Ryu’. No one minds improvement for our main, it’s just that we want to keep her unique character intact.

Basically I split them up in groups like:
Wide characters (Honda/Boxer/Abel-type)
st.hp, st.mk, c.mp
Shoto-style:
st.mk, c.hp, c.mp, c.mk, j.hp~hp
u+hp is use most of the time when I’ve got someone in the corner and they get desperate to get out, so they try to jump.
u+hp catches them and leads into ex legs, ex sbk combo OR ultra, it’s also good for catching crossup attempts.
ex sbk is a last resort anti-air if you can’t find something that beats them out well, such as against Blanka.
I haven’t used u+hk in a long time, I think I only use that against Rufus pretty much?*
