Saikyo-ryuu for Dummies: Dan Video Thread!

Replay of my Gief match is up:

Shouldn’t of gone for the super taunts, especially since i botched it twice.

Ahhh. Don’t worry too much about that. That match was so goddamn hype. Besides, tourney pressure is something else. I don’t care what you say, you got the crowd going, and those taunts got my Saikyo Spirit broiling.

As for gameplay critique, get in the habit of following up j.HK with cr.MK xx HP.Gadouken on reflex (The hitstun on j.HK is big enough to hit-confirm a cr.MK xx EX.Danku too, I think). Mixup your crossover wakeup MK.Dankus with a jump-back HK or other safe, character-appropriate shenanigans. You were kind of lucky because the Gief didn’t know the matchup, but consider closing space with HK and MK.Danku as strictly off-limits. If it’s blocked, it should be a free LP.SPD/Super/Ultra for Gief.

Also, as a personal rule, I don’t Super Taunt in Gief matches unless it’s for an Ultra Cancel combo, as EX Meter for FADC’d Koryukens, EX Koryukens and what-have-yous are worth their weight in gold. You need all the safety you can get your hands on in that matchup.

Other than that, you did sweet. That was fantastic. Your spacing was pretty good, and watching you stuff Lariat was so satisfying.

Didn’t do too badly, got a round against that nightmare, which is good

I have a feeling that if you catch them with the tip of the last kick of Dankuu it’ll be safe since you are after EX Dankuu and that’s less safe than MK and HK.

If you’re going to throw out a Super Taunt for the hell of it then cancel it from a Gadouken, if you’re lucky the Gadouken will hit and you’ll have yourself a free Saikyo Crusher if Ultra is available  Could have possibly used some more s.MKs among the Gadouken pokes.

Noted, i knew HK and MK Danku wasn’t a good idea, but he wasn’t punishing it (until towards the end) so i went with it anyway. Don’t know what i was thinking of trying to super taunt gief of all people. Didn’t think about jump back heavy kick on gief. I did too much jumping, not enough poking. I really just have to get over my nervousness at tournies, makes me hesitant when thinking about doing reaction DPs and playing correctly in general.

I am sorry to say however that this was probably my last tournament until super, unless something really local comes up. And in super I’m more than likely switching mains over to Cody, assuming he plays like i hope he does. I’ll still be repping Dan as a 2ndary don’t you guys worry about that, but im gonna try to knife and pebble my way to the top. And i’ll still probably browse the Dan forums more than the Cody forums because you guys are bros and i feel like none of the other highly populated subforums are like ours =P.

Since SPD starts up in 2 frames, they’re all equally unsafe. LP.SPD, Super and Ultra all reach into forever, so the spacing would have to be just right.

EX.Danku as an approach is probably safer as it gives Gief less time to react, despite having that extra frame of recovery.

Aww buu :frowning:

Aye, aye, Cap’n. Ol’ Gieffy-poos might be able to Lariat those MK and HK Dankuu on reaction too :frowning:

Yeah, in order to properly space a MK and HK Danku to be as safe as possible, you’re putting yourself at a range where they can can EX Greenhand on reaction. :\

Way to go, D-Bus!

I’ll add to the general 'Gief tips… throwing out EX Gados after they get a feel for the distance of the hp normal version seems to work real well for me as they try to close the distance. Also, jump back lk is great after he blocks your attacks for a bit fo extra damage and to get him scared to react too quickly.

Using whiffed Dankus to space your self for throws is sweeet. One of my fav techniques.

My final Dan tutorial video:

A Lesson In Saikyo: Intermediate Combos -

I’m not touching the tricky stuff, plenty of that around thanks to those cool Dan skill project videos :stuck_out_tongue: Might update the Dan Knee one if I can be bothered, otherwise that’s pretty much everything I know

Hope you like the little intro

The intro is fantastic. It’s also a very practical tutorial video.

Good stuff.

Hehe, it’s inspired by the Sonic Hurricane one :bgrin: Thanks

Oh yeah. D-Bus, learn to buffer crouching DP when Ryu does Tatsu. Just wiggle the stick from :df: to :db: to :df: really fast then hit :hp: when he’s either right in front of you or just passing over you. You’ll stuff him or auto-correct and stuff him, respectively.

Outside of that, just get more practice in punishing DPs and Focus Crumples with s.MP/s.HP xx HK.Danku under pressure. You’ll see your win ratio skyrocket. I like to just sit in the training room and freestyle from time to time.

You’ve got a big weight on your shoulders, being the only Dan rep at the Arc. That automatically makes you cooler than all of us. Don’t get discouraged!

Need to work on that punishment :frowning: Real shame that Ultra missed in the last round :frowning:

I was at Battlefield and watched this match. It was sad. Don’t take this the wrong way, but you have A LOT to work on. Not even just with Dan as a character but overall Street Fighter/fighting game fundamentals.

The Geif player you played was a free match for you that’s how bad he was. Same with Ryu. Dan’s s.mk is one of his best pokes, yet you NEVER use it. j.hk, another good tool that you NEVER use. You never use close s.mp combos. You punish big whiffs with throws instead of s.hp to hk kicks. To many random FA’s, that against better players would have been punished a lot more.

One thing you can learn is how to play a solid Dan THEN, and only then, you should add taunts and the likes to your game. You shouldn’t be taunting if you don’t have a solid overall game. While it is funny, you still lost both your matches and the $20 it cost you to go to the tournament.

I hold sessions at my apt in Brooklyn if you are serious about taking your game to another level you should hit me up and I’ll teach you some things. As well the other players that come.

I know i have a lot to work on but believe me, my play is much better when I’m not extremely nervous which i think personally is my biggest problem. Missed basic punish combos, saving up super taunt vs gief was a dumb idea in the first place, etc, you know what i did wrong. I’m pretty sure i said earlier i didn’t poke enough all around as well.

Because most of my practice comes from the horrendous thing known as championship mode/online, I have a fear of wakeup dps among other things. The things your 100% right about is my overuse of random FAs which i need to work out, and my lack of using jumping heavy kick, which i need to work in.

I do enjoy putting on a show via taunts, one of the many strong points of Dan. But that (and my overall poor performance) did cost me both matches. The meter i had could’ve definitely been spent better. Like i said in the other thread, “I did mediocre and or bad and i should feel mediocre and or bad.” And i would definitely take you up on your offer, I appreciate that, but i don’t have an easy way to get out to Brooklyn consistently from where im at.

tl;dr I get nervous, affects gameplay. gotta get over it.

Go to enough of these things and it should help you with nerves

i recommend a few fingers of bourbon.

Hm, reversal ultra after a blocked sweep. I wish i was 20 again and had the same reaction
