Sagat strategy / combos / discussion

Believe me when I say I wish I could play you all regularly, but my playing time is so limited these days. :frowning:

Still, just looking at the frame data for Dictator’s Scissor Kick, once it gets to the first hitting frame, it’s airborne and goes over low attacks. If he sees Sagat wind up for a Tiger Shot, he can get over it with a Roundhouse Scissor Kick. Of course, that’s why I say fakes are important, too, since Sagat’s Tiger Shot recovery and his extended arms will get hit by that second low hit of the Scissor Kick. So, working a “fake” Tiger Shot in there, via crouching jab, will allow you to then Tiger Uppercut Dictator if he falls for it.

Even with that all said, I think the Psycho Crusher is much more reliable and, therefore, much more dangerous against Low Tiger Shots. Shut that down with High Tiger Shots so that you can start watching for jumps, Head Stomps, and Devil’s Reverse attempts. Dictator has a lot of deadly options in this fight, so you can’t let him sit back and think about how he’s going to destroy you. You have to rush him down and smother him.

Being one of the most frequent posters here I’m surprised I never played you. When will you be on xbl next?

Okay here is me playing georam1. I tried zoning with low tiger shots but I still wasnt able to keep him on lockdown. Also I was trying to get my tiger uppercut out and it just wouldnt work. I know I definitely need to work on that. Anyways critique away zoolander.

Thanks in advance.

what kind of equipment are you using to record like that? does it pick up the conversations on the mic as well?

I have a dazzle DVC-100

I use it to record games on my Xbox 360 and my PS3. It will record all game sounds as well as people talking in thier microphones. Typically when I am on my ps3 I turn the mic option off in the HDR game setting if I create a match. If I go into a room and the mic option is on then yes it will pick up the conversations. The nice thing about this device through is when recording 360 games is I can play in HD but record in 480i.

how much is that thing?

Here are the rest of my Sagat vs M.Bison matches from the set I listed above.

I’ve come to the conclusion for Sagat to fight Vega he has to turtle much of the fight. Vega’s speed is just too much. Plus why is it when Vega crosses Sagat up (wall dives) it seems to take an eternity for Sagat to flip to the other side which basically nullifies even trying to get his tiger upper cut out. Throwing random tiger shots also is asking for a quick death. Am I correct on this assessment? I will post some videos of some pretty good Vega’s I play and it’s just ugly. lol

Me getting beasted by Chun Li. I couldnt get the timing of my tiger uppercut down or control the spacing. HOw do I improve that?

Vs dic round1 you played well until the random super =P. Round2 you let him do whatever the hell he wanted remember you need to get him in the corner and keep him there and don’t be afraid to occasionally tick throw with j lk when dic’s cornered. You can dp dic’s super. 3:05-3:25 Is how you should be playing this match all the time, also take note of an opponents tendencies and predict but most of the time you want to dp on reaction I notice a lot of the time you’re guessing and you shouldn’t do that unless you’re Justin Wong. 3:50-4:05 was perfect but don’t forget to throw a lp or fp fb if you think he’s going to to jump or dr out of corner, also wlking a little bit forward and hitting him early out of jump or dr with st fp works great too. Stop the random supers lol.

Just like against dic the more distance between you 2 the more of an advantage you give claw. I’ve played the best claws on xbl (immortalbmw and blacmore) and neither of them can rely on walldive alne to beat me because sagats j fp beats it out cleanly as long as you do it a little early and don’t let them grab you from behind obviously it won’t work then. Rush down claw use lk fb’s with an occasionaly rh fb and sometimes even fp fb if you think claw’s going off the wall and j rh him when he starts poking you on the ground this especially is important to do. It can be an annoying match but if you make claw scared of walldives then use it to your advantage because as beastly as claws ground game is he can’t flipkick you if he’s poking you so j rh liberally and try to bait backflips and then fb him.

When chun fb’s from mid range or close up j rh that shit!. When she sbk’s punish with lp fb. Why are you scared of chun? you’re supposed to impose your will and force her to hop like ab unny all match even when she has super don’t be afraid to throw out fb’s because most decent chuns will only use it after jumping over an fb. You look scared of chun even when she doesn’t have super you’re backing up letting her use her fb as a shield all day DON’T. Don’t forget your fb recovery depends entirely on what normal you threw last so if you expect anyone to jumpin after your fb do lk before the fb so you have time to dp after the fb. You’re just wayy too scared of chun I don’t get it you will never win if you let any player execute their game plan with little or no resistance from you. Also I notice you rarely if ever throw, it shouldn’t be an option you use a lot with sagat as opposed to with chun, dic, blanka, etc but it is still an option for sagat that you seem to forget using even occasionally when an opponent blocks too much (usually after you fb a lot.)

I noticed in all your matches you simply don’t have the confidence to constantly fb knowing you will guess correctly every time n keep the opponent locked down, this is the most vital aspect to his game. Go to training mode memorize at least 5 or 6 fb patterns and use them. Most of the damage I do comes from chip lol, as for your timing it’s fine it’s just that you overestimate sagat’s horizontal dp range (who do you think you are ken?) and so you time it right but just barely miss a lot, and if you happen to be super close when they jump assuming it’s still not close enough for you to be crossed up then use lp dp.

Help…please. I was playing RenoMD’s M.Bison and he was killing me with the headstomp. He would headstomp and get behind me but Sagat wouldnt switch directions. This would ultimately lead to a dizzy and we all know about the T.O.D. combo. I know you say keep him in a corner with fireballs but that just seems easier said than done.

Are there any videos of high quality Sagat players vs high quality Bison players? I need to see some videos because just telling me what to do is not doing it for me.

4:43 is Zoolander Sagat vs Exposed M.Bison - okay I dont feel so bad but there has to be something to counter the headstomp shananigans.

2:17 is Zoolander again vs Exposed - ??? Okay the student is questioning teacher again. I see you were trying to zone with fireballs but you were a full screen away. I did notice once you slowed down and sort of turtled, which made Bison come to you it helped a little but seriously when I was playing RenoMD his Bison was just on attack mode with the headstomp. I will try to record playing him the next time I am on.

I’m just not understanding this matchup.

I went to bed 2 hours before the tournament don’t take these matches as indicative of my usual play. The biggest glitch with st was left alone which doesn’t make any sense to me and that is when a character crosses up (usually via special move) the crossup happens so fast the game doesn’t instantly recognize the opponent is on the other side of the screen so within that moment if you try to attack it comes out as if the opponent was still on the same side which leads to backwards attacks:rofl:

Reno is infamous for those dr tricks but that’s what they are tricks for example when he hs you on the sd he usually makes it look like he will hit you on the other side but he instead lands really close to you o nthe same side throwing instead so don’t fall for it just block normally and dp the throw attempt, if he does cross up try back jump rh.

oh , so no credit for the golden dic* ? =( blaarrgh…

Sagat’s reversal Tiger Knee works great vs ambiguous crossups yo! Especially vs Bison’s j Forward or j Roundhouse. I’ve been doing it a lot vs Bison, and he hasn’t been able to touch me yet. Usually ambiguous crossups have to be done very high and Sagat is very low to the ground at the startup of the TK, almost at the same level as crouching, and that helps him escape the crossup. I haven’t tried it yet vs DJ’s j Forward or Zangief/Hawk/Honda’s Splashes, but I’m sure it can work there too (but maybe not vs Zangief’s splash as it has a huge hitbox).

IDK what you mean by that, I have no problems dealing/punishing Bison’s Head Stomp followup. I never get hit because of some problems with the game’s “recognition” patterns. I either st RH or j Forward or j Strong. That always works, and is pretty safe IMO.

Lets say ken is on left and you’re on right when ken whiffs super and it crosses up then you try to punish it in the air but your attack comes out while you’re still facing left then ken can punish you for for that.

I don’t do jump attacks to punish Ken, I do an Uppercut. Even though Sagat is facing the opposite way, just do a DP motion in the other direction (towards Ken). By the time you press punch (just before Ken lands), Sagat will have turned around and will do an Uppercut. I guess I just know how to punish Ken due to maining him, and I can tell most of the time if the whiffed Super will cross up or not. It’s not that hard actually.

There is a bug that makes it so that if you do a move on the same frame that your character turns around, it takes inputs as if you had already turned around, but does the move as if you hadn’t. Also, SRKs are kind of weird when they fall directly on top of you in that it can be obviously on the other side of you, but your character doesn’t turn around and your character will attack the wrong direction if you try to punish them without moving a little bit away from them first. I honestly don’t have an explanation for why the latter happens.
