I pulled out ygh after he said 4, and then realized even with 7 frames it’s still not going to work on wakeup vs fb’s lol. I can’t specifically ever remember stuffing dj’s j lp I’ll have to pay attention next time, but I’ve stuffed geif splash before. Hawks j lp from up close does completely shut down dp though.
Which is why gat should never high fb claw unless he’s going off his own wall, or doing backflip into corner. I disagree about gat needing space to zone vs claw from far away, gat can win a little easier from rushing him down in the corner as long as he’s cautious about being punished with j fp since from 3/4 or full screen claw’s walldive and skyhigh claw becomes more viable. This matchup requires a lot of baiting from both sides neither has a large advantage.
You suggested instead of beating ryu in an fb war and forcing him to react, gat should rely on jumping over his fb’s. True neutral jump over fb’s has uses vs shotos and true you didn’t say j rh however, from mid range the optimal choice is to j rh ryu after he whiffs an fb so I thought when you said “jump over his fb” you were referring to the best option instead of the situational option.
No it’s definitely not as good, but it does a little more damage, I can live with that. The key to playing gat well is beign able to predict the opponents every move, I know that’s what you do with everyone in any fighting game but for gat in st/hdr it’s what he depends on almost completely.
You said matching ryu’s fb’s is pointless and it’s better to neutral jump and fb. I said that’s not true and explained why, I’m pretty sure I got it lol.
Personally, I think Shari and orochizoolander are right. It depends on your opponent. Sometimes, pressing with Tiger Shots and getting into a projectile war is good. Sometimes, reacting to projectiles with j.:hk: or, if you’re just really spiffy wit’ it and like to relive the days of HF Sagat, :hk: Tiger Knee is the way to go. One thing’s for sure…you can’t be one-dimensional and win. And, by the way, sorry I was wrong on the 4 frames of invulnerability on the Tiger Uppercut. But, since it’s actually better than I thought, I still say that the Tiger Uppercut is a very intimidating tool when you master how to use it against different kinds of jump-ins. That’s a bad boy right there. I still love getting that thing to hit on the first hitting frame and watching my opponent’s life meter drain in slow motion.
Oh and Shari…I still love that avatar you made for me, man. Even if I’ll probably never have time to actually put it on my profile.
Alright guys they had a tourney on psn and I played in it. I need you to critique me and not my opponent. It would be like me playing against a ken with Sim that kept trying to a certain move. Granted you might say a good Ken might not do that but what I need you to say is the Sim should have done this which is why a good ken doesnt do this, etc. So again please critique my gameplay. Thanks in advance.
Game1
In round1 you’re using normals too much not fb’ing dic enough which gave him ample room to do whatever he wants, remember as sagat you’re supposed to control the match with fb’s sim and boxer are the only two characters you should have much difficulty doing it against. Never use lp or mp fb always use hp fb and even then the only time you would is to punish dr or pc you used it too much use lots of lk/hk fb’s instead. You should be cornering dic not the other way around. Vs dic after you get knockdown you should rh tk to close the distance, the closer you get the more you limit his options which means the more chip damage you’re able to get away with. If you think he’s going to throw after a blocked sk then dp. When he tries to crossup on knockdown block the other way and hold it because even when he crossesup which would make you hold forward as he’s hitting you you will be blocking then switch to back after his first hit from the other side. Jump less and like I said vs dic you always want to corner him so don’t jump back. Also if you don’t think you can consistently dp dr on reaction then use j fp. You rely on throwing too much, most of your damage should come from chip and dp.
Game2
Once again your biggest mistake is not fb’ing nearly enough, and from mid range bait lariats and cr rh or if he lariat from far away use lk fb. Dp when anyone jumps in as sagat you shouldn’t let anyone especially geif jumpin on you that many times. I saw you try to cr rh instead of dp that only works when you’re far enough away to hit them with the tip of it. Tk a lot less it’s not safe on block and has terrible priority especially ve geif who beats it with greenhand or lariats. The 2 main things which is really all you need to beat anyone no matter how good they are is good fb pressure and ability to dp jumpins consistently you while the two thigns you should almost never do in any matchup is jump and tk a lot which is exactly what you’re doing. The only timer I jump vs geif is neutral j rh to punish jumpins and even then it’s only when I expect running grab or a body splash and usually you should dp splash but I use j neutral rh occasionally just to mix things up. What you did at 1:55-2:00 is what you should have been doing the entire match that’s what I do vs SE. You were playing well vs chun up ntil you tried to tick throw her (it’s fucking chun!) You can beat sbk with lp fb. Vs her still a little too much jumping and tk but much better then your match vs geif.
Game3
On the jumpin dp don’t just let him get in for free. If you can’t dp jumpins consistently that’s telling your opponent they have very little to worry about and that just strengthens their offensive options. Once again wayyy too many high fb’s just use lots of rh and occasional lk fb’s you should be able to beat ken from full screen without too much difficulty. Sagat beats everyone in fb wars even when I play dgv I force jumpins, also don’t j lk vs ken that’s asking to eat dp lol. From mid range you should punish fb’s with j rh although you have to do it quickly otherwise you will either whiff since shoto hands will have retracted by then or they will recover and dp you. 0:37-0:43 you were doing exactly what you should be doing the entire match but then you just stopped applying pressure which is why he had room to jumpin and reverse your momentum. Still not enough fb’s for most of all 2 games you’re making it too easy for the opponents to move around as they please. Constantly apply pressure and then use your opponents dependence on having to jumpin rh your limbs on recovery to your advantage and whiff the occasional normal to bait a jump. No random supers. At 3:30 you jump back after closing the distance…why? what benefit do you gain from giving the opponent more space when you’re on top of them?
I’m still trying to get better with Sim but I am putting more time in really learning Sagat. It’s true no one uses him. I have been on PSN of late and I have seen more fei longs, cammy’s, etc and never any Sagat’s.
Been playing Gat a lot and I just want to know, who are the people I should be going to youtube and watching for tips on HDR gat. I learn a lot by other good gats playing, and I just didn’t get to play a lot of good gats so watching is the next best thing.
Oh yeah I remember that St1ffPeter name, I remember like a while ago he was in some kind of tourney and faced DGV in the grand finals as Sagat. At the time the vids didn’t work where I was so I put it off for another time. Now I forgot all about it, somebody gotta know what I’m talking about and have links.
Isn’t that the match Daigo loses due to messing up SRKs on the “oh-so-lovely” Japanese sticks? This Japanese parts fanboyism got to stop. Anyway, that’s just how the match is: Ryu gotta not make a mistake, and when he finally menages to get Sagat to jump at him and does not punish it, there goes his probably only chance of winning the round.
Edit: yeah, thats the one. First match he loses due to letting a jump go unpunished, thrid one he messes up SRKs and loses.
And one more question, after reading your post on how to handle certain opponents, are you saying that when fighting M.Bison that the low tiger shot will stop the psycho crusher and scissor kick? If so that does change a lot on how I go into that fight. The reason I was throwing high ones was because I thought I had to guess when the psycho crusher was going to come out. But if the low one cancel it I can use the high tiger shots to stop possible jump ins or even better…tiger uppercut.
Wait a minute. The Scissor Kick goes over Low Tiger Shots at certain points. A Dictator with good timing…or even the average timing I had back in my Champion Edition days…will go over those. Better off throwing Jab Tiger Shots to shut down the PC, SK, and the slide (which would be all of his ground advancement options except for walking forward and then crouching) and advance, IMHO.
Otherwise, yeah, rush Dictator down, please. The last thing you need to give him is time to react to your attempts to get him to open himself up. Both characters have excellent poking game, so it’s all about the footsies here.
OJ get on xbl I’d like to play you. I throw lots of fb’s both rh and lk when at least 3/4 screen from dic always stops sk when I do it. Too bad giga and Wong dnon’t play hdr either of them could take evo or at least t8 with sagat.
I believe you man but you dont think that the extra recovery doesnt change things for Sagat especially when opponents jump in. Watching the O.Sagat videos it seems the recovery was faster. Also I need to see you play a good vega. That matchup seems almost as hopeless as fighting Balrog.
