Usually, I have to do a late DP. Unfortunately I haven’t tested this much with all of Chun’s jump in attacks.
Meh. I call it 6/4 in Boxer’s favor. You can draw out jumps and headbutts and punish them with TK’s for solid damage and you can make it tough for him to get in.
But once he is in, then it’s pretty much his game since Sagat has to take risks to get him back out.
I was playing a ken today with my zangief(main) and sagat(learning)
I don’t know if it was just that it was a little laggy or if I just suck with timing, but the ken did so many lp dps mixed up with occasional j. rh and c. rh. and i just absolutely couldn’t beat him. as zangief, i just couldn’t really get in because of the sweeps and the lp dps spamming. its safe on block so i can’t erlaly do anything about it. same thing with sagat. i can try to keep him away with the tigers and tiger knees occasionally, but once he gets close enough to lp dp everything, i just don’t erally know what to do. how are you supposed to beat lp dp
Even with that advice, I struggle with the dictator matchup.
The person I was playing just waited for me to make a move, and if i threw out a tiger shot high to prevent psycho crusher he would get free headstomps. I tried to wait for him to make first move but he would just use scissorkicks and his fast shorts and slide-> throw to pressure me. I feel like all he has to do is sit back and wait for me to do something, but if I wait for him to make moves he just sits on me with scissor kicks.
I feel this way too, even though Shoto’s are supposed to win the matchup, the problem is it’s not always clear cut how to do it. Devil’s reverse/stomp are annoying because he builds meter for free while running away and steering mostly clear of the Tiger Shot pressure, and stopping weird shenanigans isn’t always evident (for instance Forward Fierce devil reverse is weird to deal with because DR Hand beats s.RH cleanly and It’s strange and unpredictable). I don’t really like dealing with him and Claw, too many movement options, oh well.
Emblem: You forgot to mention the super though, I really think the super makes the matchups even more advantageous for Boxer, because he can hit sagat with it on reaction to Tiger shots from anywhere. If you spend the first half of the matchup getting him off you he will likely have meter by the time you do which invalidates your zoning anyway =(
Dictator’s best matchups are shotos.
Really? If this is true, I honestly didn’t know that. Not surprised, it seems really hard to contain him since he has so many ways to be patient and move around as I mentioned before.
Just keep chasing Dictator around and keep the pressure on him. This is one of the few cases where you want to get in close and normal someone to death. Standing and jumping shorts, surprise tick throws, mixed with psychic TU’s from time to time when you know he’s trying to jump out of it will beat most dictators. never get on the defensive against him, or he’ll have the advantage.
bump for people looking for sagat’s matchups
It’s close minded to think of gat as someone you’re supposed to turtle with especially in remix he can play just as well on offense as he can on defense except against honda n boxer. I like to get semi close against everyone jsut look at ultra aggressive valle cornering daigo all day at evo06 and that’s without super or juggling tk!
(Not that you said anything worng) But for the recrod: Daigo was forced into the corner due to a 38 frame recovery on the tiger fireball (and extremely smart play by Valle). New sagat can’t presuure like that. The old recovery added a huge amount of pressure. It was so damn hard to jump out of the traps. HDR Sagat can’t apply presure with the intensity that O.Sagt could, period. Many characters have an easier time getting around Sagat’s TFB pressure in HDR.
Hey guys, after working on this thing for at least a month, I think I may finally have a finished FAQ. But, I need your help in checking my work.

Edit: These are Vanilla ST combos, but I’m sure I can just add any Tiger Knee/Tiger Genocide juggles for the HDR version.
Do you guys like the new sprite of Sagat? I was more of a fan of the old sprite. Just IMO.
hawk beats sagat. real talk
aww shit
I didn’t know that, good looks knowledgeable elder:china: get a ps3 so we can play sometime and you still suck at GW2:arazz:
Worse fb’s and better dive (which desn’t knock down) certainly change this 8-2 matchup to 6-4 but lets not get ahead of ourselves hawk still has a fairly harder time getting in then gat does of keeping him out. TK from the right distance can beat out dive as well which is good for aggressive gat’s not to mention meaty cr forward is a nightmare for reversal happy hawk (haha whiff raindance all day!) unless your toutanki:sweat:
It’s closer to even then the rape it was before but the same basics apply and don’t forget gat builds meter fast so get ready to eat a super if you dive against gat (unless you’re trying to be cute n dive from point blank as a surprise I guess.)
Would love to play your hawk sometime as I hear it’s pretty good (or is that honda i don’t know) as soon as you get ps3 or I get a TE stick for 360.
Does having 2 bad matchups, 2 very bad matchups, and a slight advantage over the remaining 13 characters make a character toptier? you decide:wink:
Hahaha i hate honda bro, its my hawk im 99% not getting a ps3 anytime soon so if you do get a TE stick for 360 let me know and we can get some matches. i think i played your bison ONCE in a ranked match before it was glitched (think how long ago that was ) and then never saw ya again
Im sure sagat beats hawk more than hawk beats sagat. 6-4 at worse definitely. i was just kinda poking fun cause sagats get so fireball happy and since his hitbox on them are HUGE, hawk just st.rh’s all day and stuffs them. obviously this isnt the whole strategy (again i was poking fun) and dive is beastly against sagat if you use it wisely.
one thing id like to say is that unless your fei, you should never bother trying to meaty hawk. no one has meaties scary enough that lead to ginormous damage / dizzy like fei does. reversal 360 is easy peasy
What are some good responses to Dictator’s Devil Reverse either before or after blocking?
And this move comes out so quick it can be very difficult to respond to, even from full screen. Is this just my experience or is it common for any other gat players?
^^
Before blocking…FIBER…UPPERCUT!!! Old alt.games.sf2 joke…sorry. Umm…yeah…:hp: Tiger Uppercut, man! Establish a no-fly zone!
After blocking, especially if you block it high, cr.:mk: XX :hk: Tiger Shot. Remember that he has landing frames. If he’s smart and guides it in so that it hits you low…well, you can do cr.:mk: XX :hk: Tiger Shot but he’ll probably just block it. In that situation, you should increased his fiber count.
Also, since his Devil’s Reverse starts out looking like a Head Stomp, if you see yourself sitting there blocking and then he flips around, that’s your cue to set up a Tiger Uppercut on him. You can often catch him with a deep uppercut if you react properly. I dunno…it kinda helps that I’ve played Dictator a bit, so I know how the move acts.
The problem with the tiger uppercut as a response is i they fake it pretty often. It’s easier to catch the move early with a fierce tiger uppercut but if it misses them i’m left open.
I’ve tried almost every ground option and don’t feel comfortable with any response that can punish them without leaving me open to the fake. Sure I could wait longer but I have trouble reacting fast enough.
I started to think about it and was contemplating the effectiveness of jumping FK or FP.
FreshOJ, what’s your response to blocking a double knee press? The best thing I can think of right now is to jump straight up + HK to create some space from the block stun but the reality is while in battle I usually just sit there not knowing what to do so I either try the obvious c.HK or tiger uppercut which are gonna get blocked and put me back in the same predicament as before, he’s right on my ass and i don’t want him there! I guess I could try throwing but to go from blocking low to standing to throw gives Dictator the advantage.
I also hate that damn head stomp. You see where I’m going with this? He’s got two moves that look very similiar so he’s flying at you. You can last second dp which is really difficult, you can block high and have no effective response afterward, or what? I guess I need to watch a good gat/dictator battle. This is where my game suffers, I don’t spend much time in rooms so I don’t pick up on the little nuances of how to deal with these annoying moves.
Dictator’s juggle also needs to be maxed at 2 hits. At 3 it’s just ridiculous. I understand he doesn’t have a true anti-air move but he already dominates the ground with his foot speed and pokes.
Sure, meeting him air-to-air could work, too, but you’ll still have to watch for when he flips back away from you to start the Skull Diver part of the Devil’s Reverse. Otherwise, your reaction time is going to really hinder you because you’re not able to hit him with the Tiger Uppercut.
Iin looking at the frame data for the Dictator’s Scissor Kick (http://nki.combovideos.com/flame.html), on block, the :lk: version gives Dictator +2 frame advantage, :mk: gives +1, and :hk: gives none…and that’s with the second low hitting kick making contact. So, guess what that means? The only two Scissor Kicks that you can possibly punish are the :mk: and :hk: ones. Of course, you’re asking…what does Sagat have to use in those situation? He doesn’t have any regular, special, or super that can punish that move once it’s blocked…not even done as a reversal. Ah…you forgot one move.
Reversal throw. Of course, since Sagat’s throw range is horrible, this is rather unreliable unless the Scissor Kick hits deep or while you’re cornered. Your chances go up, however, if Dictator decides to try to throw you or does something that stays within your throw range. A reversal throw will beat his attempt at anything provided he’s still in throw range.
If you can’t land the reversal throw, then your only hope for reprisal is block damage via something quick like any standing kick (provided the knee hits so you can cancel it) or any crouching light/medium attack XX :hk: Tiger Shot.
Head Stomps are a little harder to punish on block, but they can be punished if you’re in your opponent’s head. The only spot that you’re really vulnerable to the Skull Diver is directly above you. You can minimize that space by crouching. From there, watch what side they’re going to…because they have to pick a side…and then do the old Champion Edition :lp: Tiger Uppercut from a crouch. You might even be able to counter it with crouching fierce…but my memory’s fuzzy on that…or I could be thinking about Dictator’s crouching fierce.
He has superior foot speed, true, but you should be able to play footsies with him on the ground with cr.:mk: and :hk: Tiger Shots just outside of his st.:hk: range. Of course, it goes without saying that you’ll never want to throw a low Tiger Shot if you see him walking backwards or crouching, because you’re inviting him to light you up in blue flame via a Psycho Crusher or hit you with a Scissor Kick or give you a Nightmare Knee Press SC.
If your game is more reactionary, I’d suggest you start rushing him down and making him react to you.
