Watch this one, in particular the very last match, text book on how the match should run if Sagat choses all the right options.
EDIT: You might have to watch it on Youtube, looks like its banned on other sites.

I actually was looking for bonchan matches against chun…searches kept turning in old matches and the one vs broly on evo…Thanks for this.
I see what you mean regarding the last round…dude just threw when she threw.
The thing with me is when i play that patient game, she just starts walking up and then…panic ensues lol. If you watch the vid again from 12:00 to 12:16, That’s usually what happens once they close the gap…except i often times end up with the short end of the stick. it’s like no life lead is safe. up close it’s just grab mixups into traps into etc.
Gotta work more on that D i guess. Nice one once again HF this is pretty useful…if you know of any other sets, just post them on here
later
K
The most important thing about chun is that you watch her meter and her ultra. Sagat takes a long time to get good with and I really mean a long time. It took me two years to even get close to comfortable.
Seriously hard character to master.
Yea he’s really hard mainly because you always have to play solid.
Other characters have a nice autopilot to fall back on, you do that with Gat you get murdered.
Updated thread with Punishers Part 1, working on part 2( Seriously why are there 45 characters in this game!?)
Things I didn’t mention in the glossary at the start. Any punish that involves a cross up or move that goes over Sagats head, I’m using LP DP not HP (which moves you forward).
Also you may see a some things where you ask yourself “is that possible?” This is where your hard reading skills come in, I’m only showing that it’s a viable counter IF you get a good tell. Anything I missed, give me a shout. Some characters have larger sections than others because sometimes there is just not that much details.
As always, great stack of info in there Highland. I salute you. I found the stand lp to stop yun’s dragon kick and the stand mk against rose particularly interesting. As well as all of honda’s punishes…probably coz i dont play any honda’s…or yuns…or roses.
nice one, man. Keep’em coming whenever you can.
I’m playing my man the Ryu player i talked to you about earlier…wish me luck…will post up vids of some of the matches.
Remember it’s only HK upkicks that the jab stuffs. Each up kick has different weaknesses, EX covers all bases. You don’t want to play a good Yun, trust me. Tough match if you don’t know the exact spacings. Post vids up for sure.
got it. I noticed you doing a slight crouch stand before doing the kara dp to catch rose’s backdash. I see bonchan do this a lot to set up grabs on wakeup. Do you do the crouch as a fake out or does it serve any other purpose? (setting up the timing for the kara etc.)
I guess my interpretation of that is both as a fake and to also alter your throw timings, it’s possible to get people to tech either side of the throw window by varying your own throw patterns. If they mis-time the tech, you’ll grab them out of the button they pushed usually. That’s why when you tech, if you see/heard your button come out then you get thrown, you pressed tech too early.
nice one. this happens to me a lot. thanks
Its also easier to kara uppercut from a standing position
Thanks Marz. I hardly use kara dp unless the character makes a habit of backdashing. another thing is i cant do kara dp without making noise on the stick which alerts the opponent, lol.
One of the vids in the pipeline is a “top 10 tips” and there’s a throw section in there. There are actually about 4-5 ways of teching throws in different techniques. For now though, for the people that read this thread or don’t know you have -
Crouch tech
Stand tech (more frame advantage - 3 frames I think)
4 button tech (without 2 bars)
jab plink tech
and back dash tech (not really that common)
Then you’ve also got different things you can do like jumping out etc etc. The thing you have to remember with throws and wake up, is that sometimes people don’t get it frame perfect every time so there could be slight variations in the timings.
Wow! I knew about stand and crouch-tech, but the others are Greek to me. looking forward to it, man.
My thing is, due to the character design…sagat gets walked down a lot and once in close quarters the opponent walks crouch blocks walks again crouch blocks and when they get close enough to put you in block stun with jabs, it gets tricky because then its just crouch, 2 quick jabs and he just takes a fraction of a step and presses throw…you on the other hand would tech and he would grab your cr lk or cr mp animation.
I found it safer to back dash, but yeah…not very reliable to do that all the time. Another thing would be to just block and tech late, but that’s kinda like playing chicken, lol. Gotta learn that late tech you talked about before Still dont think i have a good handle on that.
If you want a sneak preview, Momochi covers a lot of what Highland is mentioning in #3 and especially #4 of his USF4 lecture series. A Sagat-specific video would be loads better, of course. Jab-plink crouch tech is especially useful on Sagat as cr. LK is pretty susceptible to frame traps so being able to use cr. LP while teching is a god-send. Bonchan uses this regularly from what I’ve seen and I never thought it was just an OS until I saw the video. lol
Just wanted to say thanks for the video series, especially the latest punish showcase. I badly needed to see those Dictator and Honda punishes. Can’t wait to see part 2 and hopefully Boxer.
Yeah , I just discovered momochis channel after all this time. I knew about all the throw techniques ( apart from the Dp stuff, that’s crazy) , but I never realized he had his own channel. I subscribed to see what other goodies are in there. I’ve also randomly found a Japanese site that has some Sagat things , but I’m yet to look over it to see if I can make sense of it. If it’s of any use I’ll put the link on there.
The only thing with the jab plink is that it’s a hell of a lot harder for us to combo from ( typically) than a chain character. Supersanto uses it a lot because I see him link three jabs together a lot.
I’m personally a big fan of the cr.mp tech since on a counter hit it gives better time for a confirm. I’m not as godlike as these guys though !
yep…still greek.
Thanks for the tip swarn…will check out momochi’s channel.
Smug vs. Bonchan
Bonchans whiff punishment with cr.lp and st.lk is unreal, another level of footsies we can only dream about. I like the way he just doesn’t let Smug get into that throw range, especially with a character that has so many ways around fireballs. That’s what I’ve been telling you about your Ryu match Krimzn, just don’t let the opponent get into that range without some major effort and you won’t have to deal with up close pressure.

Was thinking about that as i was watching the match. The way he confirms his cr lp’s is ridiculous. Was talking to my brother about the match up between smug and bonchan and we both agreed that smug would probably beat bonchan (given past results against Ryan Hart and Sanford- though to be fair sanford did pull one back with sagat against smug once. I didnt expect this though…much respect to Mr. chan, that was a masterful performance.
