Sagat is arguably the best character in the game right now so he should be modified the least in the new installment. Balance should be sought not by stripping down sagat and ryu but by buffing the lower tier characters.

Yeah, that’s expected; he’s still highest on the charts on the tournament-level tier listing. I’m just saying he’s strong yet beatable there, while lower down he causes even more aggravation to those who see people taking advantage of his easier learning curve against them. The top players can reassure them that he’s not all that bad at their level, relatively speaking, but if there were a tier chart taking into account average players, not just best-potential measurements, Sagat would be higher on those charts than the “official” tiers.

He should have a command throw. Some people just block all day against his corner trap. People should have to think a little bit.

I’m gonna go with Sirlin on this. You want to balance around mid-high tier, not top tier. Sagat goes 6-4 even against several other high tier characters, and his so called “counterpick” Akuma only goes 5-5 with him. He has too many good, safe mid and long range tools for his damage and stamina. The man needs a kick in the balls.

The only idea for a nerf I believe in for Sagat is to take away the fact s.rh juggles. Everything else is good.

I would be interested to see how many of each character were competing in those tournaments… Meaning, if there are 3x more sagats competing than zangief, then they should have 3x more wins. But if there are equal number of ryu players and sagat players, it could give some further insight on what those numbers truly represent… Because by themselves they are rather useless.

If you look at the 2008 numbers, Ryu use was 17%, Sagat was 7%. This was fairly consistent for the four months it was tracked, although I don’t know where the numbers came from.

It’s likely to be different now, but I’m not going to make a guess.

I think the only problem with Sagat is that his risk/reward ratio is out of balance. He just does too much damage for the amount of safe options he has. I don’t think his options are unbalanced at all (they seem about right to me), it’s just that when he gets a chance to hit you, he hits the shit out of you, every time.

I agree with what said earlier for sure though: Sagat really only seems overpowered at the intermediate level of play. His strength coupled with his easy learning curve makes him a nightmare for intermediate players. I’m leagues better than anyone I play with, but his easy learning curve is very apparent when I find that people I don’t normally break a sweat against are suddenly making me work a little bit. It’s not a huge difference, though.

Really, I think the character is fine, other than two things. I’ve already mentioned his high damage output. I would correct that by just reducing his damage by somewhere between five and ten percent. The one other thing I would change is his ability to juggle with f+RH twice in certain instances. It’s just unnecessary. A single f+RH into ultra is just fine, and lines up with what most of the rest of the cast can do (to anyone who says otherwise: quit doing random fucking jumps). He’d still be a top tier character, it’s just a discarding of two minor things that he really doesn’t need to win. SFIV is already a pretty balanced fighter, and by giving Sagat a baby nerf, and some of the lower characters some slight improvements to help with problem matches, I think that the game would be damn near perfect in terms of balance.

The only change i think Sagat needs is to make the fake kick have an easier input. I always want to use it but can’t pull it off consistently in game haha.

Hopefully they look at the win % of characters in ranked matches of high ranked players and see consistences that exist in deciding how to change characters. Like I think that zangief needs better options against sagat. Granted, it is a better matchup now then it used to be, but it is still significant. However, it is VERY clear that it is a 5/5 matchup between him and ryu, and several other cast members. The true adjustments need to occur between him and the 7/3s. If they do that by changing the frame data, or by buffing the other characters is up to them. But I’d hope they buff the other characters to keep the current 5/5 matchups between the most popular characters the same.
