Sabin SF4 Japan Q/A - match of the day: Barfights II

Well damn I could say the same thing about that now couldn’t I?

You drop a character just because they are the best. For what? Because you think a top tier is an easy win or something? Neither reasoning is any more legit then the other.

But I play Sagat because he is the best. Just like I play Sim in ST because he is tied for number 1 with Rog. I play Rog and Claw in HDR because…you get the idea.

I have played lower tiered characters in fighting games before and it’s a long frustrating journey. It’s just not for me.

Besides there is a hidden perk to playing the best characters. That is…if I get my ass waxed…I know it was me that lost. Not my character. I won’t ever have to come to terms that there is a ceiling my character places on me. If I lose it means that I personally need to level up.

Dude, you totally know I would have beaten him if those buttons weren’t fucked up.

Isn’t that kind of how it works, regardless of character?

What if you win?

Completely match-up dependent.

If I beat a Ryu or a Sim, I know I outplayed them.

If I beat a Rose or a Vega I may very well have outplayed them, but I also know how to exploit their weaknesses as characters and this will also be a factor.

That said…if you know your character has crappy match-ups it’s on you to either work on that match or have a secondary.

And besides…Sagat or no Sagat you aren’t going to beat any player worth their salt just because you play the King of Muay Thai.

Ahh the tier whore, because winning IS everything, and satisfaction by using a character you like is for losers.

Actually I lucked out immensely. Sagat is my favorite character.

He is by far the most interesting character in the SF universe imo and it’s pretty easy to relate to him.

And winning isn’t everything but since I do go to tournies I don’t wanna slap down money just so I can pick a horrible character. That makes no sense to me.

But yes…ultimately…if I thought Sagat was weak I would abandon him. Fave character or no he is ultimately a tool.

One might as well get sentimental over a sword or a gun. An inanimate object with the sole purpose to serve me in my endeavors.

Would you of picked Akuma in ST :expressionless:

What no wtf?!?!?!

Are you drugged?!?!?

There is a difference between best character and fucking retarded piece of shit.

Your playing a game, not actually street fighting xD
There’s a reason dedicated Japanese players win with lower tiers, and America loses even though they use high tiers!! how!? Its like playing to win isn’t as good as playing a character that suits your style.

Why not O Sagat?

I didn’t think he was the best honestly. But the top 4 were pretty close. And I actually play the top 4 and a little Ryu in ST as well as HDR but when shit gets serious then I would use Sim in ST or Rog and Claw in HDR.

I mean in any sf game whether Sagat is number 1 or not I will still play him on the side, but he won’t be my main.

My style of play? Uhh I really don’t have one. I can play any style although I guess I play a balanced style? I don’t really zone with Sagat that much though. I rushdown. Attacking is fun.

O Sagat is definitely the best in ST behind Akuma, although Sim is right there too.

Well I usually go with my gut combined with how good their options are when I think of the best char.

When SF4 came out and I was analyzing vids I thought to myself…ok top characters are Sagat, Gouki, and Ryu.

So it was an easy pick cuz hey…Sagat is my fave. But as of right now I think Gouki edges out Sagat a little. But…it’s not enough to make me switch to Gouki since I don’t think he is like WAYYYYYYYYYYY better then Sagat. Just a little more well rounded then Sagat is.

In other words, winning with Sagat is 10 times easier than the combo’s needed for Akuma and his mix up game, and without the damage/stamina of Sagat :stuck_out_tongue:

But whatever, spose if doing that lets you win, thats what matters.

What competition was won by a Japanese using a low tier character that isn’t well represented in the states as well? Please do tell. And what American lost to what Japanese playing a low tier?

Overheated: Gouki outdoes Sagat in terms of damage overall actually. The only thing Sagat has over Akuma is combo into Ultra but Akuma’s BnB’s are stronger.

Beating good players isn’t easy period no matter who you use so I dunno what your point is really.

Not to derail (?) the thread…

I’d much rather pick a character that suits my play style rather than worry about their tier placement. If that character happens to be low tier then I may try to find a similar character somewhere in mid. Top tier doesn’t appeal to me because there are too many people playing top tier characters, and I hate using overpopulated characters (I actually use Ryu a lot in other SF games, but have actively avoided him in IV for this reason). Plus, it makes things harder because there’s not a whole lot of room left for you to add your own play style to the character. It just becomes “do this, don’t do this, collect victory” and I find that to be boring.

I also find the counter-character mentality to be a big reason why America trails behind Japan, but that’s sort of another story.

Sounds like a pretty legit reason.

That said many people have told me I play a very unique Sagat and I’m very pleased with how I play. I didn’t aim to be different it just sort of happened. But I’m not complaining.

You CAN be different it just takes a deep understanding of the character and as you play your personal style will show.

Still…I cry whenever a shoto just throws out low forward after low forward. I’m so jealous. WHY COULDN’T IT BE YOU SAGAT??? Why can’t the king have footsies???

Vega, Vega, Vega.

Pretty sure this was one tourney. One isolated event is hardly sufficient evidence.
