S2 Laura: Now with 50/50 more grappling fun

I came from Gouken in IV and Oro in 3rd strike, so I’m not exactly used to this much open hate about my main haha! I knew from the first rage quit that this day would come though.

I think unless you were maining Hugo, Gouken was probably everyone’s favorite matchup. No BS at all. Really loved playing against him as Rose.

She has been giving some minor updates and more combo-ability. But she really is the ‘same’ character still. The buffs she got made her viable… which in turn has made a lot of folks freak out because most of the time the match was pretty easy. So when you never take a match seriously and now get bodied for it… yeah, you’ll be able to fill bags of salt.

Personally… its extremely fun to watch people run like hell from her once she gets in.

Nah its perfect. When alot of the other characters get medium confirms that go into any and everything in their movesets especially not on CH, its fair to her. I agree that shes now viable and not some gimmicky character. She can play with the big boys now.

What I find hilarious is that someone on here complained about her ex grab being projectile invincible and she didnt need it. Seriously?

A MAJOR FUCK YES TO THIS!!! We deserved this after that foolery last season!

Honestly I think there’s a part of subconscious at play here… Laura’s attitude, look and playstyle can only attract strong reactions from the male FGC. Last year they could recomfort themselves in the idea she was low tier, but now they have to deal with a strong and provocative female character that everybody is playing.
Unless you were talking about IShitInMyBrain who is just a jealous Mika main.

Anyone have a recommended training mode regiment they did everyday while getting better? I have a hard time finding things to do in training mode for extended periods of time as it seems most laura stuff is dependent on block pressure and if the opponent reacts. So what do you guys practice in training mode?

I just know those people complaining about Laura now are those Ryu’s online that hid their bad defense behind random DP’s.

stLK > blocked > stMP > counterhit > crMP > mpBolt

Basically just practice recognizing hit confirms and counterhit confirms from frame traps and resets
After that you can basically mix and match these strings with some forward walking in a real match and hticonfirm

Never thought of that… but it does make sense. Its ok that Juri is hot but evil… she is a sadistic b!tch. Its ok for her to be hot because she’d sooner crush us then date us… much less spend time with us. Its ok to be provocative when you are evil.

Laura on the other hand is hot/provocative as well… but she is a good person. In fact she is fun, out-going, and a bit dumb. She shows off skin because she is attractive and knows it… but doesn’t mind the looks (in fact encourages it). That… and in reality she’d be your friend and go to lunch with you just because you asked her.

All that is ok when she is weak, its ok (for some dudes) to ask the person you just beat in a fight on date. Its a much different thing (for some dudes) at least to ask somebody out who just beat you to do anything.

I like Laura for that reason. I married a women who intellectually my superior and I rarely beat in logical debates, but is very easy to befriend. Must be some correlation there somewhere…

Yeah, Laura is the seduction embodied as a fighting game character - both in her attire and in her gameplay, she tricks you and than she bodies you. She probably reminds too many bad past experiences to many people lol.

In addition to that, she always looks like she’s having fun in what she’s doing. That’s part of why I like her as well as Rashid and Vega (the troll character par excellence). And of course, people don’t like when you’re having fun with them.

Funny I like Rashid a lot too. He is a bit too technical for me to play tho.

Laura: find a way in, cross-up, ???, profit, repeat
Rashid: setup, mindgame, poke, fast attack, do some other stuff, ???, ???, ???, profit very little do to low damage output. repeat.

I’ve hated vega since Championship Edition. Little Ralf couldn’t figure out how to deal with his wall dive. That left an impression. Then again little Ralf was 12 and barely had enough money to play in the arcades.

I usually pick Juri, lose ten games in a row, switch to Laura, lose five games in a row and then hope I have better luck the next day.

On a more serious note, learning her CH confirms is probably time well spent because that’s pretty much all you can do with her. Of course you can try out some setups and stuff but the difficult part of those is to think of the right one in the middle of the match, not necessarily the execution involved.

Probably not the correct thing to do but right now all im doing is practicing how to flowchart and autopilot long strings of pressure. Im of course eating dps and mashed jabs and whatnot but everytime i eat a jab or a reversal or a v reversal is information not only on my opponent, but on players in general since players tend to harbor the same habits versus the same characters.

Im also much more pressure based than command grab based. For me, command grabs are like reads, not mixups. Used that way they seem to be more potent. Im also using a dcent amount of ex grabs when i read a good amount of complacency from my opponent when my blockstring has pushed me away.

I also like ex command grab when people are looking for the AA and after they end a string that is designed to bait wiffs.

I try not to abuse it since its seeable, but ive found that if my opponent is open to one of these things they are much more susceptible to a late reaction and eating the command grab.

But maybe they just suck or are unfamiliar with the matchup.

I havent tried to CH confirm yet because ive noticed how much damage i get just from using frame traps to hit my opponents backjumps.

Ive been practicing the cr.lk,cr.lp and fhp>hp confirms though. They are super legit.

There’s a problem though when you still eat mashed jabs when all your normals are +2/+3 on block and most of your knockdowns have auto meaty setups.

I haven’t worked this into my game yet. I worked on it a little in training mode but I don’t usually find myself in situations where it seems useful. Once you’re in that close it seems like there are better options and I’ve already gotten pretty good at confirming 5MK (CH) >5LP >LP Bolt. Or frame trapping with 2MP into whatever. Am I missing out on some Bonita fun?

I dont use all of the canned stuff because i noticed that i got blocked more than i liked when using the canned stuff as well as getting neutral jumped alot. My current style leaves me leas open to neutral jumps and more open to reversals and mashed jabs. It also allows me more flexibility in pressure and the ability to get more damage off than what the canned stuff gets me. As an example i like to use cr.lk as a tick rather than st.lk since i use cr.lk,cr.lp as a pressure string and confirm rather than st.lk x2.

It may not seem like much bit it catches people that like to hold high block against the v skill pr who simly try to walk out of presssure which alot of people try to do.

Im just learning her though and since her string based offense is vast its going to take a very long time to figure out the best way to play her for me while staying safe from recersals and jabs yet still doing damage consistently to the opponent.

I disagree, this depends on the matchup. This is how I manage to get a lot of damage on Chun even though she has the superior footsie buttons; stand at her 4/6MP range, lure it out and then VSB > L Bolt and apply pressure.

The important part is that it’s fast, and it’s a low threat. If you’ve got them blocking high because of 2MP > Overhead cancels, mixing this in can be useful. I haven’t integrated it yet, but I really want to because 2LK > 2LP > LP Bolt means another route to that sweet L Bolt mixup advantage. Only works on hit though, 2LP on block didn’t get updated in the S2 patch, so it’s a real hitconfirm.

I have no idea how people can hit confirm fHP for her target combo. I spent 15 minutes in training mode yesterday and for every time I though I hit it I also messed it up on block so I wasn’t confirming at all.

CH st.MK into whatever is no problem for me and the cr.LK, cr.LP confirm is rather easy in comparison, too. Can hit both of those reliably but f.HP no way. Just going for the st.LP/LK link in that scenario which I guess is better than nothing.
