S2 Laura: Now with 50/50 more grappling fun

Thanks for the input. The CC HK is pretty annoying. I am having more trouble with when she get’s V Trigger activated.
I don’t think I’ve ever been able to block any of the bomb pressure.
Her dash is tricky as well. I can never tell which side she’s gonna land when she anti airs mean dash.
The only counter I have against ground dash after a mp is to sweep but it’s not 100% reliable

I hope they patch the anti-air jab. I don’t see how it was nerfed cuz it doesn’t trade and even on cross up, it can still work.

Air to Air her instead of using cmd AA
I’ve had more success this way since at anytime she can just air kunai your cmd AA
Ibuki players love their walkspeed so catch their legs
Other than that just do what Tiers4Fears says and be patient inching forward
Space stHK correctly because her stLK has really good range

What’s CMD AA?. Yeah, they seem be prone to getting swept.
Playing end to end of the screen is bad, cuz she just throws kunais all day.

Speaking of Anti airs, what are you guys most comfortable doing?

I have been doing the HP bolt, but 30% of the time, I might do an input error, causing f-HP to come out instead resulting in getting punished real bad.

st.MP moves me forward causing me to get crossed up. Plus it comes out too slow. Or is it just my reactions that are slow.

Any safer alternatives?

When Laura is gonna get crossed up, I notice the Diamond rank+ players, do a V skill dash forward / a f-HP / HP Bolt / to avoid the cross up. That’s godlike reactions if you ask me.

command AA = HP Bolt I guess

st. MP is by far her best AA. Doesn’t beat cross-ups (but none of her AAs does) but since it moves you slightly forward you may actually make the cross-up whiff and recover in time. st. HP does kinda the same thing.
Other than that, your only options against cross-ups are indeed dashes and f+HP to go under them.

I check ibuki’s command dashes with cr mp. I tried with jab but sometimes it’s too fast and you end up jabbing in the wrong direction. With cr mp you track her and get good damage

About ibuki, don’t be afraid to use your fireball to have ibuki waste them kunais. The damage from them are low. The less she has the better. Train yourself to react to those side switch dashes.

Many ibuki’s I fought tend to do them alot once they lose a round or low on life. Be patient in the matchup, her buttons are tough to deal with. If she does her vs kill you can react with ex elbow if you have reactions.

Question for my fellow Lauras. How come I never see Laura’s do cr.hk on hit, v skill forward and cr.hp? It beats wakeup buttons on both normal and back recovery. Works wonders for me.

I’ve been getting better at the Ibuki matchup. Like others have said, check those dashes of hers with buttons. Been pretty successful with the greatness that is st mk. This matchup is one where you will get destroyed if Ibuki gets her way, since you have no wakeup to get her off you.

Standing MK is a great poke in general in the neutral zone for those dashers. If you get the counter then you get a free link to cr MP and insert combo here

Also good news: a patch is dropping today to address the LP bug. I just made it into gold at the start of the patch, only to lose several sets in a row to large burly men up to 2k BP higher than me.

There is something to be learned from fighting somebody out-right better than you… but 12 sets in a row for me made me stop playing for bit.

How do you Laura players feel the Guile/Urien matchup in s2?

As Mika player, I feel Guile almost unbeatable. His zonning tools fuck up my approaching moves. Regarding Urien, I feel like we need to play his game and then bait him in the first failure. Do you tend to play like that as well?

Since both Mika and Laura are grapplers with good damage/stun and ass normals/range/wakeup defense, I think the matchups work more or less nearly the same. That’s why Mika x Laura is pretty 10/0 for both. If one start her bullshit, the other needs to play very wary to turns things around her favor.

Guile is one tough matchup for sure.
You have to be patient and slowly inch your way forward with random jump ins from time to time.
If you’re not doing anything at a certain distance BLOCK! Those Ex booms come out so fast. The same goes for Urien, he can just throw out Ex Body Slam thingy.
Throw a few claps but not too many since it’s so slow compared to booms.
If you try to get in too hard, it won’t work in your favor.
Also, EX Sunset Wheel is pretty useful in this match up especially in VT.
They like to throw booms so just use it cautiously at the right distance randomly. You don’t have to do it on reaction.
If you have good reactions, you can EX Bolt his sonic boom to get in.
Being able to react to v-reversals and throwing them out of it is useful.
Other than that, just bait out his Ex Flash kicks.
Be PATIENT!

For Urien, I just zone with claps here and there, also playing very patient.
Once I’m in, just do you mix ups and bait his Ex-Headbutt. They’re always gonna use it.
After you block his EX body slam, you can press a st.LP and it’ll beat whatever normal he presses.
He can activate V-Trigger on wake up providing a shield right in front of him.
If you can throw/sunset wheel on his wake up, even if he activates the V-Trigger, you can still throw him.
After LP elbow on hit, you want to continue to pressure him with normals.
Because he can potentially do a light Headbutt to beat your throw/command throw.

I’m eating too many command throws. Tips please?

Jump?

Edit: I mean, when are you getting grabbed?
if right after lp elbow, then learn the jump back os
if on your wake up, then you can always jab her out of it if you have a 3 frame normal (unless it’s EX after an EX or VT command grab)
if it’s an ex command grab on your wake up, then you can not quick rise and punish her because the recovery is enormous
if it’s in the neutral with a dash up grab, then stick out more buttons to prevent the dash

Same question.

After LP Elbow, jump or backdash (or do the jump back OS).

If you’re getting wakeup command thrown, know her meaties: after M bolt ender she can dash in and be +1 which makes command throw attractive, jump or backdash.

If they dash > command throw after a single command throw, that’s not a real meaty (they’re like -2) and you can even get a 5f medium button punish out of that nonsense.

For dash up grab, I recommend rather than sticking a button, backdashing (not neutral jumping - you’ll eat HP bolt or 5MP if their reactions are good) at that range for the punish, but that’s up to your style tbh.

The easiest way to stop getting command thrown is to just not quickrise sometimes, most people (myself included) aim for quickrise meaties and Sunset Wheel has absurd (>60f) recovery enough that you can slow rise and wakeup into something big and damaging.

I can see myself throwing out an EX grab on a non quickrising opponent but I can’t see myself dashing and doing a regular command grab in that situation, lol.

Does anyone in here use/abuse Laura’s back command dash>L bolt in frame traps or for defense?

No
You’re better off doing clap for a setup or sometimes nothing for a read
I try not to put myself in the opponents face at - if i can help it

Not really. If I notice someone tries to regain his turn after a blocked st hp, the next time I late cancel it into EX fireball.
Normal xx back vskill into fireball is nice, but if you get too predictable you can get ccd by a sweep

Okay what is the deal with everyone saying Laura is now the new braindead Mika? Since when??? Our fireball, command dash, overhead, and range still has issues especially compared to season 1 Mika.

Man people really hate Laura now. The funny thing is that she wasn’t changed dramatically! The unbridled salt spewing from players is really surprising. That ispitonyourgrave fellow in the general thread has always struck me as a rage-y try hard.

Yeah, her general gameplan hasn’t really changed that much. The biggest two changes are probably the low confirm but you need to be in their face for that to work and by that point your opponent made a mistake anyway. The other is her overhead being plus on hit but I dunno, most people from Super Gold and up just block it most of the time.
Edit: forgot her new st.MK. I think that’s a button that actually changed things for the better. But in no way does it warrant the sudden change in perception.

But it’s always like that. Viper in SFIV was the same, event hough she was ridiculously good in Vanilla already (mained her Day One). But it takes a player to make the character shine and a buff or two to justify the hate and voilà.

I don’t get the Mika comparison either though. Laura doesn’t have an instant corner carry from mid-screen and her mixups need a bar because they start off EX Clap.
