Ryu Tutorial Video

Mickey D is the man!

I enjoy this video so much, I would recommend it to any and every new player to watch it, say once a week, or once every few times you play just to make sure you’re not falling into any of the traps he explains a lot of new players fall into. I know I’ll be doing this.

I know for myself, I’ll have days where I just can’t stop wake-up shoryukening, and I know I need to stop because every time I do it I get punished, but I’m just not keeping any open mind.

Great vid, again, and anything else you make will be welcome in my book.

Awesome video man, it really helped improve my play. For the next video could you maybe tell what kicks and punches to use and why?

Your vids have definitely helped my Ryu game. I would love to see a part 3.

I laughed at this post. I think wat his trying to say here is that the proper way to pronounce his name right is in 1 syllabus (wow… i know spelling is off here). Minor pointer though.

But I feel u mickey abt posters. Some ppl thing they are just too big to accept other ppl’s reasoning. The 1 thing I have to say in particular abt wat u mentioned is abt some combos being impractical. This is even more true in Ryu’s case becos he really doesn’t have huge combos that do massive damage. Doesn’t help that his ultra doesn’t pack a whole lot of damage either. Especially when u see how the pros play (i.e Daigo and gang), its abt doing the right thing at the right time. However, I must add that comboing the ultra is a must to learn.

good stuff.
i would suggest adding a link to the second video (and any followups) in the opening post.

i like the vid, i know this will help me learn some. thanks

Great videos, if there’s any comment I have to make, I actually prefer to use the jab (low punch) shoryuken over the fierce (high punch) shoryuken for anti-air. The reason being that if somehow you make a mistake with the fierce shoryuken (if it somehow gets blocked/whiffed), it opens you up to a counterattack of some kind.

Also, jab shoryuken gets you back on the ground quickly, so you have a lot of options after you land:

  1. EX Fireball
  2. Super Fireball
  3. Ultra Fireball

Yes you could FADC the fierce shoryuken so you can get on the ground quick and do 1, 2 or 3—but there is that probability that you can make a mistake while doing FADC, or you could have a situation where FADC doesn’t happen at all. If you make a mistake it’s a missed opportunity for damage; whereas if you use the jab shoryuken, you’re practically guaranteed to be on the ground right away to do a follow up.

I do remember reading somewhere that fierce shoryuken does more damage than jab shoryuken. I never verified it, though so I’m not too sure. So I guess I’m saying that if you’re not good at FADC yet, try the jab shoryuken option for anti-air first. If you want to go for (supposedly) more damage, then opt for the fierce shoryuken, but you have to have mastered the FADC by that point.

Hey Mickey I’ve been following your blog and your posts are actually the only ones I don’t skim over in the Ryu forums. Great video. Love the intent. Keep up the good work bro.

And btw I’m really intrigued regarding your thoughts on hitting a ‘ryu plateu’ or sth. hit me up via pm/msn or sth?

Hey man, good shit in both videos. Even good concepts for playing with characters other than Ryu.

Another good video Mickey, didn’t really help me though. I’ll pm with my response as I’m now fairly certain you may have some useful advice for me.

Good part2. Should definitely help some ppl

I hope this encourages the others on this forum to make more good tutorial videos.

well I hope that they’re good…

in any case, those videos were amazing

WARNING: LONG-ISH POST AHEAD but Mickey did something great and I’d like to throw my 2 cents in for him.

Mickey! Great work man. The quality of the videos could be improved with a direct feed, etc etc, but overall what you tried to accomplish in them was excellent.

I come from a hardcore Tekken background. I know everything about those games, but when it comes to 2D and SF, me, and plenty of other intelligent people like myself, often find themselves frustrated because we dont understand how the game works. Your video helped out a newbie like me a bunch.

One of the biggest issues is developing basics. A lot of players *never *develop these. Explaining extreme character basics would be great. I discuss it below.

I definitely hope you make more videos. Below are things that I think new players want to see, because its exactly what I’d like to see performed and discussed.

1. Basic bread and butter combos. I’m not interested in insane, took 50-tries to pull off, pushing the limits of the game combos. I want to see what does solid damage in a real match that I can pull off every time.

2. Setups. Even the simplest setups - as long as you explain them well, which I think you do - really helps new players. Even something like “dragon punch, fireball, opponents techs and is forced to take block damage.”

3. Basics!!! People need to understand HOW their character actually works so they know why a certain situation did or did not go their way. For example, your Ryu does qcb+hk. Your opponent blocks. As you land from the move, what are your options? Are you disadvantaged to the point that the opponent gets a free throw attempt? Do most characters get a free EX move on you? Explaining this to people would really, really help, so when something happens, we know that it’s NOT because we landed from the hurricane kick and didn’t execute the next move fast enough… it’s because what we should have done is simply block. That is just one example, but explaining that kinda stuff would be great.

4. Options against different character types. For example, Ken, Ryu, Akuma and Sagat all have a great reversal in their respective dragon punches. It may seem simple to you, but a basic like “knock your opponent down, FA then backdash to cancel and bait a dragon punch, then punish” would completely open some player’s world up.

Obviously this stuff cannot all be covered in one video, but a series on a character that goes from super basics through more advanced topics like dealing with different character types (shoto, throwers, charge chars, etc) would be sick.

Thanks so much for what you’ve done for the masses. Kind people like you allow others to experience the “real” game much more quickly and easily, which increases the competition and is great for any fighting game community.

Great vid. Finally a video that’s actually informative. I really like the parts when you talked about the need to knockdown in order to pressure, the spacing when poking with c.mk, and when to use EX hadouken. Got those really practical bits nailed spot on.

I’m confused, I thought the c.lk, c.lp was the link with the SRK cancelling off the lp?

Anyway, excellent video, thanks!!

Thanks Mickey, your thoughts are great in video format.

I’m not sure if you actually wanted to know the answer to this or you were just using this as an example, but on a HK or MK hurricane kick the opponent gets a 2 frame advantage on block. No attack can be executed in 2 frames so they don’t get a free hit, but they can start an attack before you do if they are quick enough. The attack can always be blocked though, or their throw attempt can be teched.

I searched for frame number of throw techs on google and your blog (mickey’s) was number 2 search site. Haha. I’m loving it man. Great blog, and great videos you should definitely make more of them. A more advanced one would be great for those of us who already know the basics.

Nope, you link the SRK off the cLP. Try it in training mode, you got lots of time to do your SRK
