You know what Mickey? These videos are AWESOME! You really should put up some matches/remixed videos of your Ryu, showing how the techniques would look in a real fight. I mean the 30ish seconds you gave us demonstrating were awesome, but more wouldnt hurt.
Good Job my 2 cents
So first things first wonderful video i got a good amount of reminders while i watched the video and even learned some things i was naturally doing with my rog but not my ryu aka lines. Some things I wanted to add to the post that I didnt see. A good combo that can be executed with a cross up and my personal BnB is Crouching LP,Crouching Lp, Crouching Mp, Hadouken/Ex Hadouken. It is combo able in cross ups and a great block string, can also set up Supers if you are saving your EX meter or need a good way to catch back up in the match. Easy to confirm aswell also pushes your opponent away to mind game SRK set-ups when ultra is available. I also had seen someone post on an easy way to LP to SRK, So a good way (Shortcut) is to hold down and forward as you are comboing crouching lk to crouching lp and then as you are doing the lp push down and roll your thumb to down forward works everytime. (sorry if that is confusing) I have a hard time justifying the BnB combos in the video because I feel its easy to punish them if you end them with Tatsu’s and SRK’s I would use them in SA combos and if you have if you have meter and you wanna try for a SRK SA to Ultra you can always SA back dash to be safe on block if you dont hit. Anywho that is my 2 cents. Again Great Vid. Also all my experience in SF comes from SF3 if that counts for anything. (Ken Player) maining Ryu in SF4 alt Rog.
I need to work on some basic combos…
I don’t think Mickey’s suggesting ending with Tatsu or SRK if you don’t hit confirm… That would be suicide! If you hit confirm, it’s the special that makes the combo safe, because of the knock down. If you’re looking for block strings, on the other hand… Well, you mentioned a nice one in your post
hahaha, his post made me chuckle a bit as is.
Video 5 won’t be released for a bit guy’s sorry. I might try an annotated match this week we’ll see!
good shit mickey!
As mentioned, the Tatsu and SRK should not be used unless you’ve confirmed the hits in this combo. Otherwise yes, you’re asking to be punished unless you’re playing whiffed Tatsu -> throw shenanigans.
cLP, cLP, cMP, Hadoken is a good string but if you hit the cross up there are higher damaging combos. I personally would go with a cHP, EX Tatsu if I knew the combo was hitting but to be more safe the cLP, cLP, cHP, Tatsu is hit confirmable. Just stop after the second cLP if you notice it’s being blocked and then you can step in for a tick throw.
sweet vids!
and you could see the progression…haha
Yeah, first the quality got better… then Mickey busted out the big guns and loaded some elevator music on there. That’s pro shit right there. Haha
Having watched all of Mikey D’s videos I figured it was time to show a little - much deserved - love. From a beginner/intermediate player perspective, you have taught me a lot of shit about this game, and this character. I really appreciate the time that you take to put your stuff up. Often I find myself neglecting a lot of the basics that you cover. These basics really form the foundation for a winning strategy.
Your entire presentation is very professional, and you speak succinctly, and you are really good at breaking things down. I hope to see more of this stuff in the future, and I really want to say thanks for all that you have contributed…
Yeah I agree with Zealous. +1 to life for Mickey D
x3 for me. Mickey D has no obligation to make videos or help anyone out but he does so out of a desire to help people level up their games, and does it for free unlike some other people out there which I won’t name. You guys know who they are. Mickey D is a very valuable resource for any Ryu player!
Wow guys, thank you so much for the kind words. To be honest, I’m more appreciative to the fact that these videos are helping you compared to the words said…I’m so happy that I am able to help others out with their game.
As Zealot said, these tutorials are made so that players can begin to lay a foundation for a strong player. I like to think of these tutorials as “back to basics, with a touch of technicality.” This is all strong fundamental play broken down so that you can not only emulate it…but UNDERSTAND why it is essential to you as a player.
I can tell you that 5x5 = 25…but only knowing the answer isn’t truly TEACHING anything. If I am able to explain HOW you get to the answer…and HOW you can use it to solve a more complicated problem…say 12x145…This is my true goal. To not only explain what is good, but WHY it is good so you can truly HARNESS it’s uses and use it towards your own personal game play.
I’ll be honest, I hope to do well at Evo this year…and I sure hope that if I don’t, I would sure wish that people don’t look down at me for it. For instance “Wow Mickey has those great tutorials, but look how poorly he did at Evo!” All in all, I gotta just focus on me and not on what others think.
Making these videos help me a lot too. I make these videos not only to help, but also to be able to test my ability in explaining the actual tactics. I figure that if I can explain these tactics to a person well enough for them to realize WHY it’s useful…I truly know that I personally understand it to a different level.
Thank you all for the comments and compliments…More to come fella’s!
They do say the best way to learn something is to teach it to someone else. Reinforces what you know within yourself and helps you remember it better. Your videos have definitely improved my game ALOT from all these basic have opened my eyes to stuff i was doing wrong.
Good Luck at EVO! Either way your still better than me haha
Hey Mickey, don’t ever worry about how people will judge you during a tournament- if you even think about that for a second while competing you’ll lose focus… Live in the moment. That is what Diago is amazing at- always staying calm, playing each moment as it comes, rather than trying to show why he has this big reputation.
As the great Fei I mean Bruce Lee once said
"don’t concentrate on the finger (other people’s opinions), or you will miss all that heavenly glory (a perfectly executed ryu!)." I’m sure he meant something like that…
Hey Mickey D got a question for you.
How many characters do you play with? Who are your top alternate characters?
I don’t have any right now but I’m seriously thinking about picking up Sagat. I’m messing around with him in training mode right now and his damage is so insane. j. hk, mp, tu, fadc, toward + hk, full ultra does 696 damage! That is so insane, and it’s not even an impractical combo, all you have to have is ultra and 2 stocks.
I really think that Sagat’s pros completely overshadow any percieved “cons” he might have. Really, his walk speed being slow isn’t a downside when everyone in the game has to come to you.
Allright , thats some solid piece of work . Only thing id like to see is if you had someone to play with to set up some of the situations mentioned , but hey , i can always use my imagination
Nice to see my zoning theory put into a vid , you know the whole zones 1-5 thing. Not saying you ripped it off of me or anything , just glad to see it put to good use.
For your next vid , could you possibly (do the gruelling task of ) showing specific punishes? A lot of these are appearent , sure , but stuff like blocked ex blanka ball ( super is an option , but rare ) , what do you do then to gain ground, or stay safe , start pressure etc.
One example would be getting a knockdown on Akuma ( especially i spose ) or Bison ( and even seth \ sim applies ) , then attempting a meaty crossup . Usually , players will use their teleport move , so Ive adapted ( maybe for the worse ) to NOT start combo strings after the crossup , as you will hit air and loose momentum , but rather look for the teleport ( while doing crouch techthrow sometimes ) and insta-hurricane , which hits them out of the teleport recovery in some cases.
Just stuff like that. Id love to see it , as ryu has some trouble with some things like this . Rufus Tornado , Gief Green Hand , Sumo buttflop , Bison Headstomp , Abel Wheelkick , Akuma Forward+HK , Sagat Tigerknee , the list goes on
Anyways , keep up the good work !
I agree. He has no downsides at all, which is why he is god tier. Yeah his walk speed is slow, but he is not a slow character in general. He can hit you in your face from complete full screen away with low step kick kara cancelled into an ex tk, and it all takes under a second.
It’s easier to highlight Sagat’s strength’s if you’re a Ryu player. It’s always this way simply because in terms of skill sets, Sagat is the worst matchup for Ryu.
Other characters such as Blanka or Boxer have MUCH greater options in advancing upon Sagat. It is simply a problem for Ryu because Sagat possesses a much similar skillset, and many of them are better.
