ST.MK generally isnt used too much on ryu when there are many other pokes that are better. On E.Ryu lots of people use it situationally.
What about st.mp I see a lot of Ken players using this lately but I don’t see Ryu players using it at all whats difference?
+4 on block, 5 active frames.
So I been using the cr.lp + cr.hk option select to punish backdashes but I was playing this one dude that would focus backdash. Is there an option select that punishes that? He was using blanka and rose.
Hey! So I am a new player; about 13, and I have been playing competitive Smash bros. A few days ago, i got SSF4AE for Xbox, and it’s fun. But I’m gonna need some help, since i’m a newbie.
First, how do i use the Fireball game?
and second, how do i Fdac and how do i apply it to my gameplay?
I was reading Justin Wong’s article on Eventhubs and he said you have to see if people are tech trapping or frame trapping. I thought these were the same thing. Can anyone give some examples of Ryu’s tech traps vs frame traps?
Option select tatsu. Im not sure about Ken’s option selects with SRK, but sometimes you can OS that too.
An OS won’t work there. You have to see it and do something. As far as an OS is concerned, hitting a focus is the same as making them block or get hit. It adds the same hit pause.
cr.lp OS cr.lk, delay sweep? Not good with these kinds of intricacies.
^ ahahaha i hear you.
Been watching a lot of Daigo sensei over the weekend and I noticed he’s been abusing overhead against top players. I tried working in more overheads into my game but people simply block it on reaction and higher level players will even hit me out of it. How in the world is he landing so many overheads against the best players it doesn’t make sense.
The reason option select works, is when an attack makes contact(if it hits or is blocked) it adds frames to the total frame count of the attack. Check it out yourself. Link c.mp twice and then watch how much faster you can hit two c.mps in a row when they whiff. When you option select, you’re inputing the OS during those frames of hit pause, so if the attack whiffs, the OS comes out. When your attack is absorbed by a focus, it adds hit pause just like if it hit or was blocked. The OS won’t come out. You have to punish focus on reaction.
Overheads are slow. You have to condition your opponent to be worried about other things, and then the overhead will work. Hit them with some low attacks and frame traps…and then if they stop working, that’s when you want to throw in an overhead. Even if they block it, it just adds one more thing for them to be watching for and thinking about.
I use st.hp xx fireball FADC (you can confirm it) to punish that. You’ll see Daigo does this sometimes as well to stop people from focus backdashing. vs Rose you can do close st.HK which pretty much beats all her options except Ultra 1 (and maybe super - I don’t remember).
There is actually one way of Option Selecting against this - meaty close st.mk
The OS’d move will only come out on hit, focus, or whiff, but never on block (if you do it correctly). The OS you can use is character specific.
See here at 8m16s:
To put it simply: One is meant to punish button presses while the other isn’t meant to try to catch people teching throws.
Consider this example:
Many Boxer players will simply jab out of blockstrings instead of going for delayed crouch tech. This is because his wonky pushbox on wake up gives him an advantage against many characters because they have to walk up a bit to throw him. So if you try a “delayed frame trap” against Boxer, either he will hit you with his jab, or you will block and he gets the advantage. In this case you want to use something like cr.lp, cr.mp or cr.mp, cr.mp (or any two moves with a 2f or less gap between them) so that his jab will always end up getting counter hit. You do this not to beat the crouch tech, but to stop him from trying to jab out.
On the other hand if you’re fighting Abel for example, he has a more regular pushbox on wakeup and doesn’t have a 3f cr.lp or crouch tech option. Abel players are therefore more likely to go for delayed crouch tech. In this case you probably want to use a series of moves with a bigger gap between them, like cr.lk, st.hp, or cr.lp, st.hk. The idea here is that you’re not to worried about the abare pokes so you can afford to use “looser” traps.
It’s not a significant point, but basically a frame trap usually has a smaller gap than a tech trap, EXCEPT when the opponent is stand teching (stand techs beat all throwable delayed traps that are in grab range). In this case, a stand tech trap with Ryu would be cr.lk xx cr.lk or cr.lp xx cr.lk. There is literally no gap between the attacks, but if the opponent tries to stand up and tech after blocking the first attack, they will get hit (there is a way around this…).
Basically, the gist of what Justin is saying is that you should identify your opponent’s close-up attack patterns/strategies and then choose your defensive options. eg. If you see they’re always going for delayed traps, just jab out or perform a stand tech. If they’re going for tighter traps, block more or reversal. etc etc.
One situation he lands overhead often is after his trademarked f.throw, LP DP strategy. Here are the attack options:
- “Immediate” throw
- Fake meaty followed by throw (see Jyobin vs Zangitan)
- Delayed b.throw to block the reversal
- Go low with cr.lk
- Overhead
- x-up tatsu
At first, Daigo used to focus only on the immediate and delayed throws.
Which characters does the f.throw, lp dp, hk tatsu and b.throw double dash hk tatsu work on? I tried those on a ken today and it didn’t hit him. I wasn’t sure if it doesn’t work on ken or maybe that player knew how to avoid it.
If he did a crouching attack as soon as he got up, he knew how to avoid it. If it’s timed right, that’s the only way other than blocking.
How should a total beginner to Ssf4 get started with Ryu?
Which BnB combos and techniques should I practice?
What should my basic strategy be when playing online?
Dont practice online at the start, imho. I think you should go to the training room and do the combo challenges. That way you can learn the flows, what stuff links. The basic motions etc… Watch some basic beginner videos (www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ELEG_w4r0Y) on how to play, there are a bunch in particular that are on Ryu. I think Ryu is a good char to pick up first as he has a lot of very good fundamentals. I think you need to set some goals for yourself. For example, try learning good spacing and try learning anti air shoryuken is a good start. Also FADC into ultra is also a good goal to aim for. Just those basic fundamentals will beat TONS of players online.
Air’s blog is really good for matchup info and videos:

Good luck! There is tons of youtube info on Ryu!
Does punishing a blocked sweep with super work against all characters?
I don’t think you can punish akuma’s sweep? but most of the cast has slower frame sweeps and because its 1 frame, i believe they should be punishable.
You can punish Akuma’s sweep with Super. If you’re close enough when you block it, you can countersweep it too. The thing is that the rhythm doesn’t feel natural - you block Ryu’s sweep, with Ryu or Akuma you just go, block, sweep, it hits. But Akuma’s has more blockstun, so your button doesn’t come out. Record Akuma sweeping (hold downback), put the dummy on playback. Get in close, block the sweep. And wait. Wait a beat, and then do the countersweep. It’s a bit tight, but it can be done. The wait is the key.
