Ryu changes in SSFIV thread

It does not appear that the 2nd hit of Ryu’s new non-EX dps are fadc-able. Or at least that’s what I’ve heard.

Yeah, that was kind of expected. The fact that they split the damage of the DP into 2 hits means that if you DP + fadc, you only get the damage from the 1st hit. You wont be able to fadc the 2nd hit. This is one of Ryu’s many nerfs in super sf4.

Unless they changed it, you can always do EX dp to FADC the second hit. Sure it’s more meter, but also a fair bit more damage.

But if you do ex dp two hit fadc, doesn’t the last part of the Metsu Hadoken pass through the body similar to when you do ex fireball fadc ultra? Getting the 2nd hit of the ex dp might not necessarily warrant losing the damage of the last hit of the Ultra…

There is only 1 vid of a good ryu out there. the rest are horrid and disappointing.

You’re probably right. The last hit is the one that does the most so it might be pointless. Not sure you can FADC the second hit on anti-air anyway.

Jab shoryu doesn’t seem to launch them as high out of the air anymore. There will be a lot less jab srk into Ultras.

This isn’t exactly new information, but I don’t know if anyone has noticed this yet. I was watching this ssf4 vid: , in the video a SRK actually gets Counter Hit. at 2:53 ken’s level 3 fa beats ryu’s shoryu, which is fine except for things happened differently from vanilla sf4. In vanilla ryu would get crumpled in the air (with no counterhit message), and ken could follow up with a srk as he was falling. ALSO you’ll notice that ken gets the full crumple after the shoryu rather than the air crumple.

So my question is, how can srk be counter-hit if its fully invincible on startup? did they remove that much invincibility from shoryu in ssf4, or is this just something with the focus attack mechanics?

If it’s counter hit, that means it’s not startup invincible.

Something weird is going on with that counter-hit. You can clearly see the srk hit ken’s focus armor. And then right after ryu gets hit with the focus attack. And that is labeled as counter-hit.

Originally, you could only get a counter-hit when hitting someone else during a move, but before the move reaches active frames. Since the srk reached an active frame before it got counter-hit, that must mean that either there is something really strange about srks in general, or the level 3 focus attack was flagged to show the counter-hit text regardless of the actual status of the opponent.

The other odd bit is that ryu got ground crumpled by the attack, even though it was just after the srk’s active frames started. So this must mean that srks are not airborne sooner after all. Well, damn.

I think that even in vanilla, you could ground crumble right after an srk hits if it’s timed right. That’s not an easy thing to do.

For some reason, that link for the video doesnt seem to work, it just takes me directly to the youtube homepage. Has the link been removed or something? any chance you can post it again?

thanks

I had to track it down when I wanted to review it. Here you go:

Thanks for sending me the link. Have just seen the focus vs dp. No idea what happened there. I think it could have been lp dp which was not executed on 1st frame of wakeup, hence it didn’t beat the focus. Did the words ‘counter hit’ appear on screen? I watched the clip on phone so it wasn’t that clear.

Yes. It appeared on ken’s side.

That whole situation is pretty easy to explain

 1. Ryu failed to reversal DP on the wakeup frames, thus not being unable to break the focus.
 2. The first hit of Ryu’s DP still has him on the ground and therefore, Ken crumpled him as opposed to sending him flying.
 3. This would mean the second hit of Ryu’s DP would be airborne, thus explaining why you can’t FADC after the second hit.
 4. Ryu’s invincibility on his Dragon Punch would probably end at or shortly before the attack frames of the move.
 1. Right
 2. Yeah. But I (and perhaps some others) were under the impression that ryu was airborne earlier due to how trade srks now function. But now there must be some other, possibly new, mechanic at play.
 3. Yes, airborne tends to prevent FADC. Though you definitely don’t need to be considered airborne during some animation of a move to not be able to FADC it. (Even if you could FADC some other frames of the move.)
 4. Actually, the only vanilla SF4 srk of Ryu’s that lost invincibility before (or “at”) the active frame was his jab srk. Strong and fierce invincibility actually lasted until the 2nd active frame was over. And in fact, invincibility doesn’t matter because once a hit is absorbed by focus those particular active frames are useless until the next hit if any. BUT, this is all irrelevant because…
 5. …the odd bit was that ken’s attack was flagged as being a counter-hit. And in vanilla sf4, you could only get counter-hit by hitting an attack out of its startup frames, meaning before the interrupted move reaches an active frame. But here, the counter-hit was done after an active frame was reached. This is really what we were all trying to figure out.

Its been said somewhere that focus attacks have been speeded up in super sf4. Maybe they have changed the properties for Level 3 focus attacks, i.e. if you take the risk of charging your focus to level 3 on a character then you are rewarded with being able to counter hit an opponents moves during its startup and active frames! Who knows, we’ll find out in a couple of weeks when we get our hands on a copy and youtube is flooded with new videos.

Any new Ryu gameplay vids out there?

The Ryu in that video isn’t very good.

no not at all. I guess we all have to wait till release date.
