Rufus Strategy/Combo Thread (because you can't poke forever...)

Thanks for this. Hearing that it works against some of his more difficult matchups (Akuma, Blanka, Sagat) is music to my ears!

i don’t know if this ‘combo’ (highly situational) has been thrown here but

if you FA a jumping character and they spin out (with their back to the corner) you can DC into j.hk, ex snake strike and ultra them

or just perform your usual j.hk in the corner combo

That’s pretty handy even if it is, as you say, highly situational. I always feel robbed when they spin out from an FA.

I’m failing to see the utility of c.LK, MP xx HP Tornado. Is it just that it’s easier? edit: did some testing in training

Off a dive kick:

st.LK > HP xx HP Tornado does 312 damage
st.LK > MP xx HP Tornado does 292 damage (and is considerably easier)

I couldn’t get cr.LK > MP to combo at all (I was testing on Sagat) : /

Anyone got any good uses for that cr.MP > cr.LK link from the Normal 5 challenge?

Last night I had my ass raped by a Fuerte player online. And by raped I mean “perfect” - raped.

He sometimes would just stand by me when he knocked me down and charged a FA to hit me on my wakeup. What are Rufus options for wakeups when something like this happens?? Reversal messiah kick or something?

Yep, that’s it. The way blockstun works in this game (ie, it seems nonexistant most of the time), people know to mash out reversals in between the LK and the HP. In a situation where the advantage SHOULD be clearly in your favor (you just hit them with a short), the MP link makes the possibility of you getting raped for missing a link far less likely, allowing you to more consistently maintain the advantage.

Reversal EX Messiah will always work. For situations where you don’t have the bar/want to save it for a potential FADC ultra, if he’s timing the focus to where it hits perfect meaty, you can just backdash on wakeup and be perfectly safe (backdash is invincible for 8 frames, and L3FA is only active for 3). Hell, with the 34 frames of recovery on whiff that the FA has, you can prolly punish him afterwards with something like l.MK xx EX tornado, depending on the spacing, and more if you do it while cornered.

exactly, or you can back dash to safety on wakeup. If he’s late starting the FA, you can dash forward and throw before his FA comes out.

It was probably Potent Shell. He’s an amazing Fuerte player.

Yeah you can ex Messiah right through a dude hovering over you focusing. If you don’t have meter, backdash.

I need to know how to handle Fuerte period. When you never, ever play him and one dude comes up with a complete Fuerte game it catches you off guard. And speaking of guard, does anyone know all the options he has and what to look for? In that, what is the animation ‘tell’ for when he is going low, going high, going high crossup, going for throw, etc. etc.

speaking of situational stuff & the uncertainty of it having been brought up before, i present this…

cr.MP as a counter hit links into st.HP(w/ easy timing)…
then ex messiah> LK followup > FADC > ultra or whatever floats your boat

pulling the link caught me off guard last night in ranked when i missed input for cr.MP > HP galactic
had to test in training this morning(on ryu) to make sure i wasnt seeing things :looney:

if its possible to link st.HP off a non-counterhit cr.MP, then the timing is super strict, i couldnt get it to land

feel free to add me on xbl! :smokin:

I’m as expert with Fuerte as I’m with Rufus (that is, no expert at all), but I’ve been toying with him sparingly and here are my thoughts:

When running forward, he can either (probably missing some, these are most common)

 • lp: STOP
 • mp: TOSTADA PRESS
 • hp: FAJITA BUSTER
 • lk: STOP AND TURN
 • mk: MIDKICK THING
 • hk: SWEEP

When he stays in the ground you can tell if he’s sweeping or doing the mid kick shit. I guess if you’re really fast you can see it coming and block low as it will block both. The problem comes when he jumps: there is no way to guess if he’s doing Tostadas or Fajitas. Tostada is his best option by far and probably the one he’ll use the most: Fuerte splashes with his whole body, hits overhead and can hit even if you crouch. The problem is, if you just block high, he can mixup with Fajita Buster which is a grab and connects only against standing opponents.

When running backwards he’s got even better options, since mp still pulls out Tostada Press, and hp goes for Propeller Tortilla which, like Fajita, is a grab, but unlike it, CAN GRAB EVEN CROUCHED OPPONENTS.

So, if he grounds you, you’re screwed. It’s a 100% guessing game 'cause there is no way you can tell if he’s doing Tostada or Fajita, and he can alternatively mix with some sweeps or stops to bait your reversals and grab - and start over again.

Problem for Fuerte is - he’s pretty weak. Deals pretty poor damage and receives a little too much. A character with dp-like AA can abuse it (being very careful of the lp baits) cause it will beat both Tostadas and Fajitas or at least trade which is bad for Fuerte. With Rufus, I don’t really know. Maybe lp Snake Strike works against him, but my experience with this matchup is really, really limited.

on wakeup, if they do bellyflop, and its not meaty, you can lp.snakestrike, otherwise blocking low is safer on most other accounts. his uppercut throw beats out direct dive kicks and snakestrike(but not well placed j.fierce) -_-,

just closing the distance w/ rufus is a bitch, b/c of all the random shit fuerte can do -_-

^ Thank you for that.

Yes, that was my experience to a T. If I could actually get my hands on the little shit, I could peace him out easily. I would get like 1 combo into ultra in the corner, and swing the whole match around. But as you say, once hes got you on the ground it’s 100 percent guessing. And that overhead press can cross up, IIRC, making things even more insane.

Litterally he’ll have you guessing on the ground till he landed at least 6 mixups on me. I need some Rufus options on how to handle it, if I know somethings coming. Lack of DP in this matchup hurts.

He was also good at Fuertes infinite, he could get me about 40% damage off it.

I told the dude after he peaced me that if I wanted to play guessing games I’d throw in 3rd Strike.

Here’s some videos, in case they’re any help:

 • the Fuerte in this video makes the Grand Master Rufus look like a child;
 • ; and,
 • .

Not pretty, really.

who is this fuerte guy!? kidding… but ive literally fought only 2 on xbl since release
one was so-so but the other was mega-tough w/the same type of wakeup games you guys just covered

@home sick from work so w/my freetime i went back & tested that counterhit cr.MP>st.HP link on sagat as well
everything seems to work & i upped a vid of some of the combos

annotations are fun! :clapdos:

Okay I originally thought you said st.LK, not cr.LK. I was trying to figure this out because I realized that st.LK, st.MP, HP Tornado works against Viper, and you didn’t list her!

Could anybody test this to find out which characters you can do st.LK st.MP on? I currently don’t have the game :frowning:

what is the timing for the cr.lk, cr.lp, cr.jp, ex tornado combo? I cant seem to get it for the life of me.

pretty sure the second to third hit has to be a link, not a chain for it to work.

I did say standing LK…it’s just notated as close LK, since you can’t do the far one to MP on anybody. That’s what the list is referring to.

When I did it against Viper, it didn’t combo; are you sure she wasn’t crouching?

EDIT: just tested it, and yeah, she was crouching, it doesn’t work when she’s standing.

I have a question.

When jumping in with Rufus’s j.HP, I was wondering what would be his best option if he isn’t in range for a s.HP. I’ve been looking around here a bit and didn’t see anything pertaining to it so I apologize if its already been pointed out.

Probably Ultra if you have it, its range is longer than it looks.

<3F1

c.mk too, and you can tag ex hurricane spin to the end if you have a bar. or even just a hp spin, if you know they can’t punish you during the gap between the c.mp and tornado
