Rufus Strategy/Combo Thread (because you can't poke forever...)

God I hate Blanka.

I love the fat man but boy if he doesn’t have some real difficult match-ups (the difficulty of shotos and Blanka are accentuated by the laggy online play I think). He’s a great character but very much risk-reward; like most of the new cast you need to keep working hard for your wins.

I am in Maryland for the next 2 weeks, so we will get 2 weeks of good games haha

justin did you accept my FR yet for some rufus mirrors? and arpharmd b. im about to send one over so we can play.

add me to the mix please

(Are there any UK XBL Rufus players out there? Feel free to add me. Playing transatlantic is just too laggy : /)

I have been watching most the top Rufus players videos for a while now and noticed one thing I have a question about. They do a divekick that crosses-up the opponent and hits very high on the opponents body, yet they still have enough time to link a combo such as s.LK >> LP Tornado.

When you normally do a divekick people say “oh it has to be about waist level or lower”.

It also looks like the opponent is doing a different animation when hit by a “DEEP” dive kick? Is this some kind of “meaty” bonus that gives you frame advantage enough to do more moves off of it.

One example that may be skewed due to Ryu throwing a hadouken at that exact time:

yeah, if you hit them deeper with the divekick, you have more time to hit them because if you hit them too high you will spend more time in the air and they will recover of the hitstun before you can hit them

Regarding the above video, isn’t the reason Rufus was able to combo into s.lk from the high Falcon Kick because it was a counter from the hadouken? Or was that dive JUST deep enough to allow it to combo?

If you watched the video, it was never a counter hit.

I clearly understand that if you hit them “deeper” they have less time to recover, which is why I am asking why it actually worked in that case when it was not a deep hit at all. He hit him very high like at the shoulder level, yet it still linked into his LK HK combo to Ultra.

I also have a problem with a blocked blank ball. I can never retaliate with a cr. hp. What are the conditions to make it work or are there any other strats against blanka because he seems to give me the hardest match ups.

jump inss
c.mp works but you have to hit early.

blanka ball
on block: walk forward about 2 steps then c.hp. timing is a bit hard but you’ll get used to it.

rainbow ball
again c.mp. works remember to do it early. on block: punish with ultra or dash forward c.mk ex tornado.

slide
block and punish with c.mk ex tornado or ultra

electricity
block and punish with c.mk ex tornado or ultra. there is a small part of blanka that is vulnerable to the dive kick. it is at the front but remember it is very very small.

ultra
after the initial ground pound you can ex snake strike to get you out of the chip damage. a reversal will get you 1 counter hit. a non-reversal will get you on the other side without any hits. If you block all of it you can basically do anything.

Non-EX rainbow ball can be FA’d. Thus you can DC to j.RH to ultra, or whatever.

Fixed. I hope you aren’t one of those people that craps their pants vs. an EX rainbow roll, because you shouldn’t be (I mean sure it’s a great escape/positioning tool, but if you’re going to do it standing vs. a standing opponent, anyone with any sense will Focus absorb).

Just finished testing, and have this list;

cl.LK, MP, HP tornado works against- Gouken, Akuma, Cammy, Dhalsim, Blanka, Chun, Guile, Sagat, Claw, Boxer, Rufus, and Abel.

Also, I dunno what all the fuss is over the Blanka matchup; I find that to be pretty easy, and solidly in Rufus’s favor. You just have to know what you can’t do (for example, you can’t jump on him on wakeup if he has meter), and learn to punish his shit, and I don’t see how he can hurt you.

is that when theyre crouching?

I checked all of them on standing opponents, at point blank.

EX messiah kick also beats blanka’s ultra. I haven’t done this enough times to be sure of which situations it works but if some blanka does his ultra from a distance I just wait til it’s about to hit me before I EX messiah kick. It’s worked everytime so far, but I’m not sure about when you’re right next to him.

it works on all but the initial hit. I think(though i havent been applying), if blanka does it right next to you, ex snakestrike might be the better option

that match’s been easier for me, mainly because i’ve been using c.lp’s, jump back j.hp, and well placed divekicks to deter blanka players from blanka balling
