I was watching a Rufus match the other day and the player did far standing fk. (the kick that launches the opponent into the air) and he’d jab them in the air to reset them. Is this a good thing to use with Rufus? That was the first time I’d seen a Rufus use it and it looked interesting, so I wouldn’t mind doing it myself.
I do it, if I have the opponent near the corner and surprised myself by connecting the far hk. It’s not something you should do everytime especially if you can land a bigger damage combo, but it can be a good reset. You have to recognize your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. If its Ryu or Sagat I wouldn’t do it cause of their good reverals. If it was Honda, Bison, or Abel I probably would, all depends.
What “bigger damage combos” do we have after a far hk? Except ultra or super
You can EX snake strike after far hk for 7 hits (335 damage) on Akuma, Balrog, Cammy (in the corner more reliably), Dhalsim, E. Honda, Gouken, Rufus, Sagat in corner, Seth, and Zangief. Or you could walk forward cr. rh for the untechable knockdown, or Fragrance Palm for creating space e.g. versus Zangief when you don’t have meter for a better followup. A good meterless and non-character specific (AFAIK) option in the corner is far hk, fragrance palm, lp/mp SS.
That last one were interesting, can you do ex ss midscreen on all the chars you mentioned or only corner? In training mode you don’t get much more damage from lp/mp ss rather than just sweep and I think you want the hard knockdown since the mixups usually give you more than 20-50 damage extra.
there’s a lot of moves that do more damage than s.lp, that would be the “bigger damage combo”. The s.lp is good because you can pretty much immediatley do a dive kick after, but a s.hp or c.hk would do more damage. Or as mentioned, fragrance palm into lp or mp snake strike. You can also dive kick someone after a far standing hk or follow up with a second far s.hk. Both I believe are character specific.
I started doing this now and it is very effective once u get your opponent used to you always going for dive kick, you can surprise them with j.mk cross up and at least on ryu it’s a free combo to hp > hp tornado (while he was crouching) I’ll test it out more with dif people and standing in training.
edit: j.mk crosses up these fighters while standing too: boxer, sagat and gief, gouken, abel (thx to changuillo and parge)
yes it does against boxer, sagat and gief, maybe im forgetting someone, but those are the best examples
Also on Gouken and Abel.
why the FCK does an EX SNAKE STRIKE come out when i messiah kick>fadc>(try to FCKING ULTRA) its pissing me off. 9.5/10 times its a f*cking ex snake strike
You’re trying to ultra too fast after doing the dash cancel. Let the stick go to neutral after the dash, then do the ultra motion. And relax, its just a video game… its supposed to be fun.
You need to let the stick pad go back to neutral, so dash forward, wait a second and pop that shit off.
Also, I have a quick question… I keep getting grabbed out of my dive kicks no matter how low I hit, how the hell do I combat this?
divekick again, mix it up. you should be able to at least combo a std.lk off a divekick. Now if they blocked it, just keep divekicking until they stop trying to throw you, it really pisses people off when you do 4 or 5 divekicks in a row and they try to throw it every single time, I love it haha. So dont be afraid and mix it up, careful with Dps…and dont do that against gief
Hi guys, Simtang here.
Trying out Rufus for a bit now, really enjoying him, just a few general Q’s.
-
It’s not really worth using his super unless you’re certain it’ll win you the match right? His EX attacks are too good too waste yeah?
-
I can do all his combos, except for that damn st.lk, st.hp link. I know it’s a 1 frame link, but how do you guys land it all the time? You plink or just train your muscle memory that hard? Also, do you guys land that link 100% of the time, or do you tend to avoid that combo?
-
Can you link crossup dive kick into anything? I can crossup all the time, but I can’t seem to combo off it and usually end up eating a DP.
-
I kinda don’t know what to do when I’m on the defensive and my opponent is in my face. I’ve been playing this Akuma player a lot and when he’s in my face I don’t know how to defend, what to counter with etc. EX-messiah aside, what are some good moves to do in this situation?
ty
- Correct, its really up to you, but more often than not the super is not worth spending the meter unless it will win you the match.
- I recently started plinking it after learning the timing by just feeling it out in training mode. If the s.hp gets blocked you’re pressing it too late, if it doesn’t come out, too early. It’s tough to get used to, but once you have a general sense of the timing, p-linking greatly increases consistency. I would say I land the combo between 75-90% of the time on a good day, and I have been practicing. If I go for a couple days without playing its usually a lot lower.
- Just because your dive kick crosses up does not mean you can combo. You have to hit your opponent as they are waking up in order to combo a cross up dive kick. The dive kick has to be really well timed, and the kick should land in the small of the opponent’s back in order to combo. From there you can combo into target combo or s.hp hp GT.
- Your best bet against an Akuma putting on the pressure is blocking. Pay attention to his patterns, and if you can predict an unsafe demon flip, EX SS his ass. Otherwise, try and land a reversal EX messiah after a blocked jump in, or just continue to block until you can tech a throw and put some space between you. Of course be familar with Akuma’s cross up tatsu, and use c.mp as an anti air to stuff dive kicks and other jump ins.
Excellent, thanks for the help.
You know, I’ve only been playing Rufus just a little while, but I’m finding him more fun than Ryu/Sagat/Boxer (the guys I usually play). I don’t know why, but it seems like I have to work more for the win. Even though Rufus is high tier, it doesn’t feel like the wins are just given to me.
However, I feel like tearing my hair out when playing against Sagat or Ryu. If they can zone well, I’m pretty much ****ed. Still have to get used to Rufus’ jumping distances.
Actually, there’s one more question. Playing boxer for a while has given me the nasty habit of hitting cr.lp twice (for the cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.lk xx headbutt combo) and this has translated over to Rufus. The problem is that I know a combo is cr.lp xx galatic, but I accidentally press cr.lp x 2. So is there anything that can combo of cr.lp x2 or can I link a cr.lk/cr.mk or anything like that? I can’t seem to shake the bad habit of pressing the lp twice instead of once.
IIRC, cr. lp, cr. lp is a 1 frame link, so if you really want to go with that, I guess you can. However, I believe you can do cr. lp > cr. lk, st. lk > … into whatever you want, but note that you’re going to get scaled heavily. I honestly hardly use cr. lp; I just feel like it’s not part of the mixup game.
Having trouble against Sagat/Ryu is common. If you can get in a forward throw, though, that creates an opportunity to go for that dash dash x-up divekick.
far standing lp links to cr.mk. so you can EX tornado after it, but it is kinda char specific. your best bet without meter if youre using cr.lp is, cr.lp cr.lp farstd lp, farstd mp.
problem against ryu/sagat is that they force you to jump so they can punish u. So you need to play smart and dont rush all the time, but dont defend all the time either, you need to feel when you have to attac or defend, try building a lot of ultra meter so you can ultra twice per round, it gives you more changes to win since rufus has a ton of ultra setups, so when the chance appears you will have your ultra ready to go.
Don’t forget c.lp, c.lp, c.lp, c.lp xx Ex Tornado!
Hi!
I’ve been watching some vids of high-level Rufus (specifically Kindevu) and I noticed sometimes his Messiah Kick (either normal or EX) got blocked and he didn’t do any followup… and the opponent didn’t try to punish him!
Example:
I thought Messiah Kick’s only safe exit was lk followup FADC back… So if I were Sagat, after a blocked Messiah I’d mash Uppercut… If Rufus did mk/hk followup he would be hit, and if he did the lk one, he would be either hit by it or the uppercut would just not come out at all if Sagat were still in block stun
Sorry if I’m not clear enough but I’ve seen this some times now and being a Rufus player I don’t know if I’m missing something on the Messiah followups
