Well, I’m not saying that dive kick spam is unstoppable (c’mon I’ve played this game more than once), I just hate how Rufus’ game seems to revolve around landing dive into combo repeat or landing dive into target combo to ultra. I would like for him to be given some better (or different) tools, so that he doesn’t have to dive kick to “get in” so much, but my thought ends there because I really wouldn’t know where to start or what to change.
I hope you do realize, though, that tournaments aren’t the only place where high-level play can be had. It may be best, but not the only.
Dive kick isn’t used to ‘get in’ as much as rolling forward, walking forward or Messiah Kicking forward. If you get to ‘dive kick’ in, it means your opponent screwed up by telegraphing a poke or fireball (you can’t dive kick against them on reaction).
Of course tournaments aren’t the only place where high level play can be found. I brought them up because if you want to show that a character is ‘brain dead’ you must show that his ‘brain dead’ stuff works as well as high level as it does at low level. Saying “I win my friends at high level with brain dead stuff all the time” doesn’t cut it.
good point. Yes, I’m obviously no Rufus expert, but I’ve used him several times, and that’s a “change” that I had in mind. It may not be the best idea or even make sense, but that’s why I’m posting here-to see what actual Rufus players think about it. You guys can tear me apart if you wanna, but posting in these “foreign” character threads does help dispel some of the generalizations and inaccuracies people have on certain characters which find their way to me.

If Ultra damage was reduced for all characters in general it would probably help low tier characters vs Rufus but I wouldn’t just outright lower just his.
I said I don’t use Rufus, not that I don’t know how to use him. I don’t enjoy playing him precisely because he is boring/repetitive/etc… I tend to go for characters that have a lot of options with specific uses that promote cerebral play. Rufus doesnt have a lot of options, but the good ones are all pretty low risk/high reward, high damage and easy to execute. Factor in near-Zangief level stamina so you can make more mistakes than your opponent and lots of ways to combo into easy mode ultra in any situation and you’ve got a character that, yes, I would call braindead in SF4.
The only exception is against shotos and Sagat, since SRK neuters Rufus’ best options. Hence my initial post - though I forgot to mention Gief, who also gets the advantage because he can also deal with divekick and EX Messiah easily and has similar stamina and big, easy damage like Rufus.
ps. I don’t know who told you that high level Rufus play isn’t about gratuitous divekick pressure. It is. Watch Justin Long or any other good Rufus play.
The irony of your name-calling while not posting a legit response to any of the concrete points I made. :lol: Again, I just explained why I find Rufus to be a dumb design from a gameplay standpoint. I don’t enjoy that style so I don’t use him, and your response is that I have to win tournaments with a character I don’t like to validate what I already know? That’s one hell of a logic fail, bud.
People were saying that its good against people who like to jump backwards (and maybe backdash?), which is exactly what Rufus needs. I’d seriously consider picking that and losing all the SOS combos against Abel, Chun Li, and maybe Rog.
Nope you failed when you denied that you need to know how use a character before you can declare him brain dead. By and by, you didn’t post a single legit response. All the arguments here pre-empt the points you make above. Again, you fail.
Edit: The fact that you even suggested that Justin wins because he spams dive kick is the very essence of EPIC FAIL.
Nobody has mentioned c.MP and c.FP yet. c.MP is my favorite anti-air normal in SF4, period. It’s fast and has a nice hit box. c.FP is a ghetto version of a Dhalsim’s s/c.FP. It’s a brutal long range punishment/zoning tool. Add these to the pile of Rufus’s many obscenities.
Probably less health. Like 1050 or so. other than that it really won’t make much of a difference. EX snake strike is already shown to be nerfed, and everything else seems to have been left alone, so yeah.

I would actually sport Rufus cr.SP being FDA cancelable. That would theoretically give him some new approaches for a offensive. His Hp(stamina) is fine right now. Hes fat, its only fair that he has more meat to take in the hits err…fat… I kinda want Messiah Kick to be slightly nerfed. Maybe 1 frame slower startup?
He really is fine, and whats more he’s actually a very aggressive character in a game that people usually say is too much turtling. So other than making Fragrance Palm a little more useful he’s pretty much gold.
-Ultra needs to take less dmg.
-Since snake strike is not as buff make it easier to ultra after in the corner for decent (not too great) damage
-Remove mid screen ultra after a gt. I’m starting to hit this more and more nowadays (especially on vega) and the dmg is way to high for a guy that can instant dive kick
-target combo hits everyone on crouch
-fix his hit box when he’s stunned
-remove j.hk (one hit) -> j.hk (two hits) other way around too
-make normal snake strikes a little safer when you land (for shotos)
-make his ultra really easy to punish on block and kill its retarded hit box (the last kick of the ultra seriously hits ppl behind him)
-sagat should not be able to dp ex messiah fadc back dash
-a little faster dash/back dash
-remove the ability to absorb 2 hits of a fireball with gt
-remove fierce gt -> ultra in the corner (others still work)
-increase the active hit frames of his cr. mp (this will make the sagat match up sooo much better)
-50 less health
-Nerf gt’s damage by a bit
-ex messiah should hit for all hits on all close crouching opponents (sick of the last hit whiffing and eating a free combo)
-the ability to cross up mk everyone
cross up dive kick actually works on sagat ESPECIALLY on hit
