Have you seen Team Fortress 2? Stereotypes are funny because they are that: stereotypes.
So offensive AAAAAAaaaaaaaAAA
I’ve always kind of preferred SNK’s character designs. Ramon is a far less stereotypical lucha libre wrestler than El Fuerte. And while it’s a matter of opinion which one is better, Vanessa was doing the 30something red haired secret agent thing before C. Viper.

And the only joke is Rufus being put as Ken’s rival when Balrog, Cody and various others would fit the mold a LOT better.
Also, surprised that no one has mentioned this, but his fight style is meant to be an homage to Sammo Hung, an overweight martial artist who starred in films with Jackie Chan and MORE than proved he could keep up with the Legend.
But still, Rufus sucks and Bob from Tekken is a better homage…

Yeah I’ve heard that theory, that Ken’s real hair color is black. Kind of disappointing though, not a real blonde.
-
Makoto…is a rip off!?
That is incredibly disappointing, I looked up the character Akane Kendo…and you are right, eerily similar. Why does Ranma choose her out of the other 2 sisters? Makes no sense. All the 3S characters inspired by other direct sources makes me lose a lot of respect for the design. Whilst SF2 had Balrog=Mike Tyson, other than that they just seemed to be somewhat inspired by stereotypes rather than actual other characters.

Hmm…that makes sense about Rufus. They are unfortunately quite a few of those americans, especially today, and tragically in many kids. When you get into a real fight you realize quickly that if you aren’t trained you stick with punching and counter punching.
Vega is a handsome ladies man. Sure he is a bit vain, but matadors are very popular in certain parts of Spain. The only thing somewhat insulting about his design is he cheats…he uses a weapon (claws) and has armor (mask).
-
Rufus being anyone’s rival seems like a joke.

Sammo Hung, the enigma of Rufus becomes a bit clearer. He is overweight, though no where near Rufus…he isn’t obese actually. As far as keeping up with Jackie Chan, acting is acting. In modern MMA or K-1 or boxing you rarely see an obese individual or even fat individual succeed. Only guys I can think of are Tank Abbot and Butter Bean…they were both incredibly muscular though in addition to their big guts.

I agree Rufus sucks. I wonder if he was mid or low tier if people would still pick him.
when I first saw Rufus I thought he was German!
I thought he’d be the new Dan. And Germany would be offended if he represented them, hell, they might be offended by how Hugo is portrayed, not sure though…
Hey, there is a reason that a common phrase K-girls use in flirting is, “Do you wanna die?”

Though to say she is devoid of sex appeal isn’t exactly true. Shes…cute.
Ooh…is that some sexy shoulder showing? I could see her appealing to people with foot fetishes or who want a dominant/sadist girl in the bedroom. Interesting that she wears a plain Gi similar to Ryu but has a bright red bra seemingly from the Victoria Secret catalogue.
She’s a tomboy, and there’s quite a few people out there that dig tomboys
(these are called “people with good taste”)
I have no problems with Rufus’s design. I prefer it over another average-set character that appeals to everybody. Tekken’s full of them, KOF revolves around them, and MK doesn’t even have any overweight characters. Diversity is one of the things that fighting games needs to appeal to a large demograph, so when you have games with nothing but prettyboys or cutesy schoolgirls with short skirts, you turn away some of your demographic.
I was hyped to try Rufus in Vanilla SF4. He was unique from the regular roster which made things fresh. Seeing the WW cast then the Alpha and SF3 cast later made the game kind of stale. This was suppose to be a new game; why are all these throwback characters returning let alone co-existing in one game? Alpha and 3S are years apart, yet no one’s aged from the alpha games. That’s another story though.
Yeah, his name has a German ring on it. The only other Rufus that I know is Shinra.
The other thing about Rufus is that he is a joke on Bob from Tekken just like Dan is a joke on Ryo/Garcia from KOF. A friendly jab at a competitor.
Bob is also self taught, fast for his size, blond, fat, has a huge ego and is strong. However Bob INTENTIONALLY got fat, is smart, and doesn’t talk too much which is the exact opposite of Rufus.

Ono says that calling Rufus the “American Dan” would be acceptable.
Although Rufus is self-taught, he also conducted research on which moves he is imitating actually works or not by travelling to China. That’s probably the reason why Rufus’ moves actually works despite looking stupid.
I don’t know why, but I ended up rooting for Rufus in SFxT’s Rufus/Zangief x Julia/Bob trailer. Maybe because Bob acts like a Mary Sue of sorts.
dat shoulder.
Was Bo Rai Cho not a fat drunk man?
The fact that rufus is a super fast morbidly overweight dude that cant keep his mouth shut is what makes him great. He’s the sort of over the top persona that fighting games need imo. If every character were the quiet karate master type like ryu or the dark edgy i-gave-in-to-evil-forces type like evil ryu/akuma then things would get really old really quick. Call me a man of simple taste but id take the wacky antics of rufus over the shitty angstyness of some of these quieter world warrior types any day of the week.
As for whether or not his design is part of some sort of social commentary? I mean, sure, they’re making fun of americans. Personally i find it kind of funny in its own hyperbolic sort of way. Nothing to get worked up over though, its all in good fun.
Ive been a rufus main since day 1 and I dont care if he’s at the very top of the tier list or dead last ill play him till the bitter end. Taking a really clutch victory from the hands of my opponent in a clutch matchup and subsequently hearing rufus say “whoa…what a workout!” or “It takes a long time to master kung-fu!” has brought me more satisfaction than any other single moment ive had with sf4. He’s won his way into my heart :3
Hugo actually is a parody of A.Schwarzenegger, based on the accent, though he looks similar to Lou Ferrigno.
