I was being serious. I think Xenogears is a terrible game.
i say stick with the old school and ff7. ff9 was okay. the rest are crap. and ff12 lol what a joke
Tales of Whatever
FFIV-VI, IX
Baldur’s Gate
Neverwinter Nights
Secret of Mana
Blasphemy
Me and Stuart have the same taste in RPG’s.
FF9 is great. Everything about it is great. I lost my perfect save somehow, and I left Canada before I could finish making another one.
I’ve only played and completed the first Golden Sun, but it’s an amazing game. Anyone know if it uses a battery save or if it’s flash memory? I need to buy the 2nd game off my friend, no way I’m emulating Golden Sun 2. It would be disrespectful.
Legend of Dragoon is one of my favorite RPG’s on PS1. Its story is really, really good. Black Monster, that religion with the tree, learning about the Dragoons. Stardust is cool.
Legend of Legaia is a game I don’t think many people know about. Is the sequel any good?
Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen for PS1. Diablo 2 like game play, good story. Not turn based, but oldschool enough. Thought I’d mention it since people are talking about D2 and Kingdom Hearts.
I finished Star Ocean 1 and 2 a few weeks ago on PSP, good games. I need to replay SO2 though, I want to play it again with different characters.
Boo hoo. I don’t like what you like.
GS lost age was just as fun as 1, I just didn’t like how 1 forced you to buy 2. Would of been really nice if it were altogether.
cc was a alright, not to many people mentioned threads of fate. which was a better game.
Threads of Fate was pretty unique. I liked it.
Parasite Eve, cause it was the first game I played where a female was the lead. Also, she wasn’t exactly wearing a bikini through out the whole game >_< Probably my top 3 RPG if not the top.
Agree’d.
I’ve never understood the hype around it.
Bad story, bad gameplay, bad graphics for it’s time, and bad music. There really was nothing to special about the game.
Hell, I even forced myself to beat the damn game to see if it ever got better. Waste of my 50 hours, jeez.
I guess when you play a game no one else has played, it’s easy to say how good it is, I guess.
I’m surprised that Valkyrie Profile hasn’t been mentioned ‘more’ in the thread. It’s pretty glitchy, but the game rocks.
I just couldn’t get into Cross, and I had tried many times. I hated the battle system, and found the game to be too dissimilar to Trigger.
Final Fantasy 6 is one of my favorite games, but I’m thinking that it hasn’t aged that well.
I’m sure much better storytellers could have told Xenogears’s story without dragging it across 50+ hours of poor pacing and multiple personalities, and that much better devs would have implemented a text speed option so that I could blaze through the characters saying ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
I traded my copy of Xenogears for a used copy of Brave Fencer Musashi, and to this day I have absolutely no regrets, considering Musashi is superior in just about every way, including story, which is a bit sad.
Dr. B’s seven personalities all work together, precluding the need for 50 hours of bad lip synching, poor use of ambiguity, and needless complexity.
EarthBound
Mother 3
Mother 1
Chrono Trigger
Any Phantasy Star
Final Fantasy 1 on NES
Shining Force
already did… front mission games, fire embelem, advance wars were all good
Ok while xenogears is one of my favorite rpg’s of all time, I can accept that the game is riddled with some flaws that keep a lot of people from getting deeply into it, but a few points.
-
The story is really incredible considering how complex it is and that it was localized fairly well in an era where lower budget games did not get the best of the translation treatments. The story becomes even better if you take the time to read the translation of Perfect Works which helps flesh out all the things that got cut down on in the final bits of rushed production.
-
If by bad gameplay you’re talking about some of the frustrating platforming and puzzle design then that’s ok, but the battle system was so fun, and very well done.

See the bolded part above… I’m just gonna come out and say it: are you fucking nuts? Even if you loathe the game, Xenogears has one of the single most beautiful sounding scores produced for a game to this date. The music is flat out incredible, and even if you don’t like the style you have to give credit for the quality of the score. It fit the game and the mood perfectly, and it’s a soundtrack i still keep on my playlists to this day. The theme of babel tower is one of the greatest rpg themes I have ever listened to, I put it on par with things like the opera house in FF6.
I don’t think Xenogear’s music is particularly good or bad. Just okay.
I do loathe the rest of the game though.
I did a search and saw Xenosaga got mentioned.
I really dug the first one. Part two let me down. Part three never touched my PS2 due to it’s predecessor.
But Xenosage Episode I. Cop that. Prolly cost you five bucks…and that’s AFTER tax.
I see I’m taking a lot of heat around here for not liking Lost Odyssey.
But…I stand by what I said, with a caviat, the game did have two redeeming qualities:
(1) The Dreams. Like you said, these were very well done, and very detailed. IIRC, they were written by a very well respected author, though his name escapes me right now.
(2) Jansen - the only character (story wise) that provided any enjoyment.
I stand by the rest of what I said though. I understand they were going for a “classic” feel, but there’s a line between feeling “classic” and simply feeling dated. Lost Oddysey feels very dated to me. And not because it’s turn based, because I’ll still pick up and play FFVII, Xenogears (AWESOME), or Legend of Legaia (AWESOME, though it’s damn near impossible to find a copy anywhere - only the 1st one, the second one sucked hard). Combat is limited, and the characters in combat are heavily archetyped. Yeah, you could (concievably) teach every charater every skill, but because of the game engine, it won’t really do you any good. Hell, the only character that’s even balanced - i.e., good at everything, is Mack. Every battle is tanks in front, healers and you favorite non-immortal/healer in back. No variety. The storyline could have been interesting if the villain wasn’t ridiculously cheesy, and while I won’t spoil the ending, it was very unsatisfying.
to be honest i pretty went through every corner across the game while bulking them up in the arena stages to the last hidden boss in the game where her hp was over 20 million or something (im a bit off but it was high as fuck)
i have no idea. I still need to complete Tales of Vesperia, get back into completing blue dragon and actually start on oblivion.
You showed me wow. But alas i just couldn’t get into.
