RPGs that are worth playing

Castlevania Symphony of the Night (not considered a traditional rpg but lots of rpg elements)
Mario RPG
Chrono Trigger
Wild Arms (first one haha)

I forgot totally to mention Wild Arms, good point. The first one was pretty intense and had a storyline of intense proportions. I also liked the beginning where you go through three mini-storylines to meet the characters up (thus sharing a goal, per se). Totally wicked game.

As for CT on DS, I haven’t played it but I’ve heard it’s a pretty damn good buy. A family member has it. From what I’ve seen, it has enough perks and extras to make any old-time CT fan happy too (myself included).

Yeah, you can get Hannah and Hinnah. Hannah’s fucking broken.

You don’t notice how crappy the frame rate is until you see it in 60FPS, even while the Gae Bolg is being fired. I sure the hell didn’t until I actually played it on PC.

hey guys FF7 is the only RPG worth mentioning IIRC

They’re really hard to get though so it wouldn’t matter much at least to me. You have to fight the seven like twice and the second time its like all of them at once.

I never made it past the Icey Idol in that game.

If you guys like grinding all day play Izuna.

Legend of Dragoon- What the hell, this game rules yet there is no sequel (That I know of).
Secret of Mana- Multi-tap goodness.
Chrono Trigger- Been said a dozen times.
FF8/9/12/tactics- I’m picky about my FF’s, some of the one’s I picked were often not well liked or rivaled another.
Mass Effect- I didn’t think I would, but I really enjoyed this.
Valkyrie Chronicles- So fun, reminds me of Tactics in a lot of ways with a cool setting, sequel on the way.
Parasite Eve series- Horror and RPG, gotta love it.

About all I can think of really, hardly play this genre.

omg, this is something i would post almost word for word.

I have a secret twin out there :china:

edit: wait, ff8 and 12 are horrible

Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 need to be played. If you like fighting games, you’ll appreciate the combat system, especially in VP2.

  • Golden Sun 1&2
  • Xenogears
  • Morrowind (GOTY + Mods)
  • sooooo many others T_T

shadow heart series

I dunno about the rest of you, but Final Fantasy Legend (On Gameboy) was a real winner for me. I loved the entire game, and for a Gameboy game, the music was pretty great too.

Been a looooooong time since i’ve played it, but I still like to break it out on business trips just for nostalgia.

Kotor 1+2 :d

Definitely, yes. Final Fantasy Legend was good. So were the FF: Adventure games. Game Boy had some pretty spanking RPGs on it back in the day. One that just brought to surface while thinking about FFT… Ogre Battle. I used to play that shit nonstop on SNES. I was also hooked on a series…

  • Soul Blazer
  • Illusion of Time/Illusion of Gaia (depends on where you’re from)
  • Terranigma (it was made in PAL format. Played it on Emulator and the SNES)

They were pretty awesome for what they were. What about some of the “Tales of” series? Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Destiny, …etc etc… Most of those turned out well.

I’d stay away from Tales of Legendia.

I never played Terranigma, but Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia were both great games - god I wish I could go back to the SNES days… I still think that was the best console ever, hands down. The amount of QUALITY games on that system just blows everything else out of the water, in my opinion.

I wish the consoles of today had game selection like the SNES did 10 years ago =(

My personal favorite is Planescape: Torment. For me it has the best story, character interaction and writing of any game i’ve played(especially if you download the unofficial patch so you actually see more than 10-15 of the 70+ banters). Games like NWN, Kotor, Kotor2 and Mass Effect felt lacking and dull in comparison(Mass Effect came closest, but only because the voice acting and cinematics were so great, the writing is not in the same league).

If you can get past a somewhat lacking combat system and play a game for the reasons above, and you haven’t played through Torment, you are missing out!

Vagrant Story: To this day, remains my favorite game of all time. Incredible ammount of depth in it’s combat, very good replay value, and still has one of the best stories in a video game. Ever. Square has never, and probably will never, top this effort again.

Black Sigil for DS has two big issues: a brutally harsh random encounter rate and some rather questionable grammar. If you can stomach that, this Canadian-made JRPG-style game is decent.

The Dr. B summon takes twelve full minutes to complete. Don’t let it finish, though, not if you value all life within a five kilometer radius.

JRPGS:
Suikoden - Utter Classic. It might be the nostalgia talking, but this is one of my fav rpgs of all time
Suikoden II - Technically superior to Suikoden in every way. A must have if you like jrpgs
Wild Arms - Great music, and the characters are interesting.
Tales of Vesperia - Tales battle system is awesome. Not the deepest storyline ever, but the characters are all interesting and the combat is too fun.

WRPGS:
Baldurs Gate - Classic
Baldurs Gate II - Probably my favorite WRPG. Does everything baldur’s gate does better.
Mass Effect
Fallout 3

Yeah, I played the living hell out of Suikoden (I and II). I wasn’t too happy with III and so far; I guess it just had a totally different ‘feel’ in full 3-D (and the storyline progressed slower than grass growing/paint drying). Buldur’s Gate was pretty interesting as well - one of the original D&D PC games.
