If you like the Dragon Quest series you’ll like Blue Dragon. It’s basically Dragon Quest 360 but with job classes.
i like dragon quest but i don’t have a 360… ps why is it a 360 exclusive game
Thing is, we’ve had first person RPGs for the longest time. I don’t think it’s a matter of evolving but rather just more people are aware of that kind of game and are getting around to liking it. Plus marketing of course.
Like the aforementioned Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, we’ve also got a slew of otehr things. Arx Fatalis, you can see snippets of this in Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, we’ve got the critically acclaimed but didn’t take off as well as this generation’s FO3 which are Deus EX and System Shock 2 and if we go waaaay waaaaaaaay back we got Ultima Underworld and the like. Probably more but I’m unaware of them.
My point is simply that the genre’s always been around. It’s not really evolving so to speak, people just know about it and developers/publishers are hyping the shit out of them, that’s all.
That said, I do think quite a number of JRPG franchises are in a rut. For instance, Suikoden for the most part seems pretty fuckin’ scared to break away from the formula (S3 was a big departure, and so was Tactics) and instead they keep trying to recreate number 2 over and over. Tierkris was a departure in terms of narrative too, but I’m more talking about gameplay, where there’s not too much difference between S1, 2, 4, 5 and Tierkris.
FF on the other hand (lately at least) kept things fresh between the ATBs, X, XII, the Tactics games, etc. Hit and miss for most people, but that’s the nature of changing things up.
EDIT: You know, there’s probably some guy that enjoyed like Ultima Underworld back when it came out and was all like “I tell you now, THIS is the future of gaming!” And he is right, waaaay way later.
id rather have more action rpgs, like terranigma, threads of fate, and star ocean
Agreed.
And if for some reason this isn’t possible, all turn-based rpg’s should adopt Grandia’s battle system. It’s one of the only turn-based series I actually enjoy.
Though, there are some games that keep the turn-based battle system fresh (Suikoden with its massive amount of party members/Xenogears and its fighter-like system/Valkyrie Profile/Persona with its…persona’s).
especially where the character design in both games have very strong similarities.
What.
You can use, at most, up to 6 at a time. That’s hardly “massive” unless you mean you can recruit up to 108 (of which 60-80 can probably be put into the party) and that’s not really keeping the system as a whole fresh per se.
The Tactics game has more of course, but that’s a different story.
I know these 2 games didnt pilot the genre, but there’s a reason why these 2 games are at the top right now and are so well liked by many. The genre had to have improved to get to this point.
Improved and/or changed to have more appeal and entertainment of some kind. It’s just how it is. Just like how JRPGs didn’t exist to many, before FF7. There’s a reason why, and like that game or not, it had got it just right.
Cause there were alot of first person RPGs even on PS1(King’s Field - though I never played that) and shit like that that’s been around, but obviously they weren’t that big. Fallout 3 and Mass Effect got it just right, this part of the genre is only going to get better imo. JRPGs have gone stale and need a push.
Yeah, pretty much. Good marketing + more appealing to more people = win.
I’m personally not particularly fond of either game. I’m not as hardcore an “ZOMG THESE GUYS ARE RUINING RPG LEGACIES” but I’m not on the orgasming side either. However, I do think the games can bring more exposure to this particularly niche of RPGs and that can only be good.
JRPGs, I just there’s too many with not enough to mix things up. I really like how the FF series has progressed, but what other series does that? Only one I can think of offhand would be the Valkyrie Profile series. The Grandia series has got a good basic system but not enough skills to make it really good to me (note I haven’t played 3 or Xtreme) whereas on the flipside, stuff like Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land had a basic system but an abundance of useful skills that were viable for a big portion of the game.
My point being that I find in a lot of JRPGs, there’s no point to a huuuuge number of skills. Would you have used any of the buffs/debuffs before FFVIII (and even then only Meltdown) and after that FFX (Power Break and the like). FFX-2 came in and gave lots of classes a wide variety of skills, though of course as time went by people found some really broken combinations. Same for FFXII, although a lot of the Techniks were for the most part underpowered by the time you get them.
So in a lot JRPGs, the combat is a letdown, and the stories then just get more convoluted. Not necessarily better written, plotted, or paced, just more everything with sometimes no regard to moderation. See the “dark” Kingdom Hearts 2.
Tl;dr - FPRPGs are taking off, that’s good. JRPGs do need more work. We are in agreement.
I’m playing the new Devil Summoner right now, and it is 1000x better than the last one.
Yeah, the “massive” was referring to the recruitable party member count. The fact that you can recruit that 60-80 means that you will find some originality for a playthrough…until you decide auto-battle works out much better.
I also said that the system was “fresh” because of the fact that you’re not forced to take the same 5-10 members throughout the game. Certain characters can hold certain amounts of runes, not to mention that some even come with good runes already.
I’ll admit, I play Suikoden for the story/characters and would prefer some change in system.
Yeah, the combat in the first game was shit.
I like how negotiation works this time too. Quite consistent, as opposed to how I felt when I did it in P2 or SMT: N.
SMT: N was so fuckin’ bananas. I never finished it. I really liked it, and liked the story and characters, but the difficulty was so intense. At one point in the game everything you fight can charm you and just make you massacre your own team. I did like how no matter what you were fighting you could get decimated if you weren’t paying attention.
I never finished it because my PS2 shit out on me.
you know what i just realized??? ive done some intensive thinking about the quality of fallout 3 as a game…and i just realized that fallout 3 is the first game that i actually think is bad, but i enjoyed and found entertaining…i dont think i ever played a bad game where i was like ya this shit is entertaining…and i honestly dont know why i kept playing the game, maybe just cause i wanted to finish it or maybe subliminally (sp) it was good to me (which i dont think is the case), or maybe i was just fatuated with the art direction of the game…
im outi
Roberth
I like 10 -15 hours RPGs. FF4… 4life!
My favorite RPGs: Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Suikoden 1 & 2, the DS Dragon Quests, FF4, 5, 6 & 12, Breath of Fire, Seiken Densetsu 3, Chrono Cross, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Persona 3, Valkyrie Profile
I would like to add to the crap RPG list and that is Sudeki. This piece of garbage was boring, story was bland in the 2 worlds conflict that has been done before, characters are not memorable. I think this was M$ first attempt in the RPG genre and boy they failed
I always think of those pics you DELIVERED to SRK that one time every time you post. Thanks mean Joe.
my only claim to fame that year  Well I will say that I do have plans to do a Euro trip next year
What is this what I must know what PM please what
Anyone here have any opinions on the SRT/SRW series? I like OG2 on GBA myself, but I feel that the battles can sometimes get really draaaawn out.
Animations are pretty though.
