RPGs that are worth playing

Oh man, you never forget that shit. People be losing their mind over sister pictures. Fuck that shit, my expectations are in another level now. As far as I’m concerned, you do one good thing for SRK and you are set for life. All some people ever do around here is bitch and moan about everything, circle jerk or blindly jump into any dick they see for pearls and pseudo forum fame.

it all depends, japanese love there dragon quest and pokemon. our taste in rpgs, is completely different. and my taste in rpgs is gameplay, story and characters. most hardcore rpgs fans could less if the game was 16 bit.

I like the SRT series, just wish there was a shorter mission count. I always wanted to play through both story modes in OG1, but 42 missions in just one story made me change my mind.

I agree with you, before I even got the game I didn’t like it at all. Another friend of mine had got it through gamefly and I watched him play it, I thought the game was mad gay. I kept calling that shit weak, but then I gave it a chance and found out how much fun it was. Same thing with Mass Effect, a different friend showed me the game and I thought it looked boring and was stupid, he offered me the controller and I was like nah I don’t want to play this, but thanks to what happened with fallout 3 I decided to give Mass Effect a chance, and I then liked it just as much.

There’s something about these games that makes you want to play them.

Maybe it would be better if some of those games were 16 bit, because then maybe they’d concentrate a lil bit more on what counts, and the limitations would be acceptable as a throwback, like Megaman 9. Alot of times better innovation and creativity comes from limitations.

Darkstalker beat me to it but I’ll throw in my vote for The Witcher and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, though it is worth noting that Bloodlines is really much better with the fan patch applied. I want to get in on Fallout 3 but I am waiting for that complete pack that includes all the DLC and the original game. I’ll probably get in on Mass Effect as well once I find time for it.

I played the first 45 minutes or so of Blue Dragon last night, and so far I’m pretty impressed.

looks like i have to crack it open again. Now question where were you? This glorious thread appeared in 05.

yep with a crap load of dialogue in that time frame

Very true, but the music is amazing and the dialogue doesn’t feel forced or too drawn out. I like the camera in combat a lot and the voice acting is way above average for a JPRG.

I have played OG1 and 2 and enjoyed them. 1 more so than two. Battles do get really drawn out the worst thing though by the end of the game there is no strategy anymore. You have to have SP Regen on all your pilots and have someone alive with an armor breaker weapon to have any hope of killing an enemy unit.

The newest game is even worse though. The combat system was only a good idea on paper and it makes all the battles take forever. Also there are only 4 or 5 mechs in the game for you to use and they can be support chars only which kinds of kills the whole point. I barely made it though 7 hours of that game before saying fuck it.

The endings weren’t cut because of time constraints. the endings of Planescape were cut to be intentionally ironic to the entire theme of the game: “What can change the nature of a man?”

The ending pretty much subverts that completely. While combat isn’t particularly difficult and playing the game as a fighter shortchanges your esperiences. Spells are pretty damned spectacular.

don’t get me wrong i like the game and you are right the camera in combat is pretty solid. Their is a few “quick time” events and if you pull it off you get achievements  There is DLC available and it is brutal

Final Fantasy iX should be played by everyone. other than that i can recccommend Arc the Lad Twilight for cheap and umm, Threads of Fate PS1, and FFXIII which I have over 350hrs on.

Lol, wut?

you created a time paradox.

Oops I meant XII. Y’all knew that!

Gonna have to recommend the Grandia series, though either 1 or 2. Didn’t like what I saw of 3 enough to buy it. I started with 2 but 1 is unique enough to also be mentioned. G2 had the different mana eggs but G1 had the weapon level/skill system.

Other than that, Baten Kaitos is a long but good overall game for the GC. Don’t let the card-based battle system fool you!

Also, no love for Skies of Arcadia? That game is too good. One of my favourites so far. So much exploration and sidequests, felt like an actual adventure and still remained fun, something RPG’s these days seem to forget.

SoA was boring to me.

Grandia was fun, but I didn’t like the story/plot.

I really wanna try Baten Kaitos out though. Heard it breaks conventions here and there, and apparently it has a cool plot twist of some sort.

Super Mario fucking RPG

Grandia 2 had a very M. Night Shyamalan twist to it which pretty much ruined the story for me and I quit playing. I haven’t bothered finishing it since. I did like the characters though for the most part however.

Never played Grandia 1, Grandia 2 was good until the “what a tweest!!!”, and Grandia 3 was too fucking short. Skies of Arcadia was pretty cool.

Gonna go ahead and state again that Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter was awesome.
