RPGs that are worth playing

so what do you guys think would be better for me, Lost Odyssey or Last Remnant?

my criteria:

  • little to no grindan, unless its fun grindan. no bullshit like “oh hey i just got a new whatever, but it will be worse than my old shit until i go level it up. better go fight weak monsters over and over again!” some training is ok, but i dont want to spend most of the game running around fighting easy battles waiting for a number to go up.
  • game has to be HARD. getting pwned on the first boss is a good thing to me.
  • fights have to be interactive, i dont want to get to the point where i just do the default attack a whole lot and heal when needed. the more brainwork required to win the better.
  • no traffic. by that i mean when youre trying to move your ass from one point to another, there arent 84987239874239784 random critters waiting to get in your way so you will fight them.
  • engaging story. the darker the better. im not looking for Linkin Park: the RPG, but i could really do without the philosophical heart-to-heart moments that seem to be in a lot of rpgs. you know the, “i’m really glad i met you…i’ll do my best…lets go protect innocent people” bullshit.

basically i want something epic

I’m partway into it myself, but sounds like The Last Remnant is right up your alley. Grinding tends to not be needed as opposed to switching aroudn your unions and formations until you get what you want. It can get hard, seeing as how you can get caught by a lot of enemies (I’ve had more than 10 enemy unions at once…with more reinforcements on the way) or if you bump into one of those super enemies that more or less count as a boss. While the first boss isn’t particularly hard, the game does get much harder really fast, particularly if you mess with a lot of the sidequests.

About the traffic, there are times where there are a lot of creatures, but you can outrun them, you can sometimes get them to run away from you (being much stronger or from a bonus through digging for items), you can also slow down time before you engage enemies or not, if you so wish.

The story is alright so far. It’s not particularly dark though.

As for Lost Odyssey, I haven’t played it, but I heard it’s quite simple and easy. No grinding involved though.

ct for ds

Is anyone interested in picking up the FF13 games?

Unsure yet. Need more info on them.

I will at least want the soundtrack for XIII. I believe Masashi Hamauzu is doing it and I like his work.

I LOVED Legend of Dragoon. That game is a blast.

RPG’s that I have played and enjoyed:

Legend of Dragoon
Granstream Saga (Anyone else play this?)
Baldurs Gate II & Throne of Bhaal
FF I
FF IX
FF Tactics
Secret of Mana (In Progress)
Diablo II/LoD (consumed my life)
Soma Bringer

Yeah, short list but I haven’t played too many.

I just bought Tales of Vesperia. I’m not far into the game at all but the battle system intrigued me and I have heard good things, so I am giving it a shot. Game is $30 new on Amazon right now actually.

new front mission coming out vid here

If you guys consider FF tactics and RPG, does anyone like Front Mission?

I really enjoyed 3 and 4, though I hadn’t finished 4 due to other games and life getting in the way.

EDIT: damn I’m slow didnt even see the post above me

Xenogears and Eva are somewhat similar, except one actually has a good story.

PROTIP: It’s not Eva.

The only issue with XG’s story that I had was that it was so chock full of stuff that they couldn’t fit it all in, thanks to Square fucking over their budget. If you read Perfect Works you find out LOADS of shit that was supposed to make it into the final game. The motherfuckers actually wrote out 10,000 years of history and what happens in detail.

It’s the same with Xenosaga actually (although they didn’t put half as much into the plot as they did XG going by the XS artbook), the story was supposed to finish out COMPLETELY different but Namco being douchebags fired Soraya Saga and had their own writers do Ep. 3.

Fixed it, you missed an “n” there.

You didn’t have issues with the story? You mean the pacing, writing quality, sequence of events, etc. didn’t bug you?

EDIT:

Speaking of Soraya Saga, I found that XS1 to be the worst (he was in charge I believe), XS2 was better but very flawed (he had some input) and he was gone by XS3 to be decent.

You added an unnecessary “n”. And missed “s” here and there, Soraya’s a girl.

To answer the question I didn’t mind it at all, disc 2 shenanigans notwithstanding (again, lol budget).

As for XS…XS3’s story blows. Well, XS’s story in general blows but 3 was the worst. They took it to the place it was never intended to truly go and flat out made Space Jesus, Space Mary and the Space Rapture, and then threw in some quickie XG references as fanservice. Soraya’s original idea never got to be shown, but according to her it was a far cry from what we got. Besides, I will never diss Soraya Saga as she wrote Chrono Trigger’s story.

EDIT: I saw Slide mention Front Mission, that game is pretty cool…too bad the new one is a fucking shmup. “Yeah SE should totally borrow from WESTERN developers!!!” Great fucking idea, morons.

im in that same boat as well regarding the game because right now this would be 3rd FF game i’ve played. The others? 10 and 12.

oh great thanks for reminding me of that crappy ass story. At least the good thing about the XS games is that one can skip them:tup:.

Kingdom Hearts series.

I actually don’t hold CT on a pedestal either, so fair enough.

I just remembered Shadowrun. I heard the Genesis one was good, any opinions on this? Or perhaps the SNES version, which I heard was waaaay different?

Shadowrun is much better on SNES than it was on 360. Real talk. Shadowrun kicked ass.

Out of the offering that genre provides, Shadow run is the least appetizing one.

I got the true ending to Chrono Cross today. Whoever said it doesn’t have enough to do with CT should play CC again.

It butchers the CT story and pretty much makes a full on attempt to ruin anything and everything about the greatness trigger provided. Take it out of the chrono universe and it’s a very solid enjoyable rpg. Leave as the clinical abortion it is upon the story and it deserves to be chucked in the nearest volcano.

Dude, Brave Fencer Musashi is such a badass fuckin’ game.
That was my first PSone game, and from there I was given the best first impression on any console.

  1. Plot was so lame dude, and there was nothing complex about it referes to Specs post.
Unless you mean bad translation = complex story, then holy fuck you win that argument.
Plus, there was a lot of dialog that was not needed.
“Hey Fei you want something to drink?”
    “No thanks, I’m ok.”
“What do you like to drink Fei.”
“I hate Pepsi, but Dr. Pepper is awesome!”
“I dunno I’m not a fan of Dr. Pepper.”

BORING AS SHIT, HOLY FUCK GAME STOP DRAGGING ASS!!

  1. Gameplay was boring as shit. Oh look, let me hit the same dial every time and watch this boring combo my character does, so boring. Other games share this kind of reputation, but holy fuck at least it’s a quick attack and back into the battle, not this long boring 5 hit combo that takes like 30 fuckin’ seconds to do.
Hey guys, let’s farm for the last boss, oh wait the last boss is in mechs. Let’s just goto Joe’s shop and win. The End.

  2. I guess if people enjoyed the Xenogears music, then they are easily amused to what other RPG games have to other.
All the songs in Xenogears we’re really bland, hell even games like FF9 had more memorable titles.
I only remember the boss song in Xeno because it sounds like the guy is saying “Don’t have sex in the gas chamber” or something.

I liked Daggers Song and Beatrix’s theme. :frowning:
