Roundtable Discussion: Ways in which to expand the SFxT community

A lot of pro players like the game because its a “good” game (has fundamental rules that always apply and the more skilled player tends to win more consistently), its just not as popular or excitement building as Marvel 3 so it produces less money – and when you play professionally you have to go with the money.

The 25th anniversary tournament should attract a lot of attention… right now I’m practicing and studying hard to try and qualify/place high (I really just want it full of people who legitimately love and support the game, instead of money chasers.)

I think this thread has stayed on topic for the most part. As the players we are collaborating ideas to find ways to make the games exciting and fun. If you do host sessions please try to include sfxt. My friend and I are serious on the game and know the ins and outs. Next time we hope to invite jibbo to come play with us

except sf4 consistently gets more tournament entrants and thus money than mvc3, yet you see a number of top players (fchamp, yipes, etc) giving up on sf4 to play mvc3 exclusively. maybe because they find it more fun?!

The fuck…? Most people, even those who really like playing the game, admit that Marvel 3 is a terrible game (because of the randomness of it), but its more popular so it makes more money…Coincidentally, what makes it so fun is the same as what makes it so bad… the randomness, ask any player who regularly wins at high level in marvel and if they aren’t completely starstruck by the game they’ll tell you that after a certain skill level, you can literally toss up a coin to predict who will win because the game can be incredibly random, which makes it exciting and interesting, but arguably also makes it a bad game tournament wise because it makes skill an irrelevancy at a point.

I really have no idea what you’re trying to say, but its a pretty common sentiment that the greatness of the Marvel series comes from its brokenness. It’s a fun game, but that doesn’t change the fact its actually pretty bad in a lot of ways.

Additionally, I know in my local scene a lot of Marvel players were SSF4 players who only play Marvel because its popular and they didn’t want to get left behind with nothing to play. Most of them are ready for games like Tekken and Persona 4 so they have something better to play.

marvel 3 ISN’T more popular than sf4, look at the attendance numbers for literally every single major.

i’m not sure why you’re going on about how broken the game is since my post has nothing to do with that. i’m just addressing your assertion that people are passing over sfxt in favor of mvc3 because of money, which clearly isn’t true because if they only cared about money they would all be playing sf4, since that is the game with the highest attendances and hence the most money.

Tried to do my part for my character by writing a primer for him. I would love if you guys could check it out and tell me what you think. Maybe if you all think its good then you can use it as a guideline for people trying to transition from a SF4 version of a char to the SFxT version. Check my sig for the link. But on the topic of promoting the game there are just so many factors and we all need to work harder cuz this game has no arcade release.

What made 3s big when the US had given up on it? Japan learned the game and showed everyone they were playing it wrong. That’s what we need to do but its even easier now with technology. We need to show up at tournies and play the game. If you gonna rep shotos ok fine but u better damn well make sure your gameplay is super top notch and you do shit the run of the mill ken scrub doesnt.

I know I make heads turn online with my Sagat and thats what we all need to keep doing. In our discussion, in our guides, in our articles and in our combo vids and match sets. Keep making heads turn. Do crazy shit. Play super solid. People complain about the timer. Ok then start going IN ON FOOLS!!! Fuck them up in less then 10 secs and get that perfect. I play a zoning team and have ended games in that time with the right set-up and combos. This game can be hype we just gotta play it right. The other reason times out work is because people lose their cool and dont know how to calmly stop run away and walk sumone down. We need to talk about the dumb shit people hate and how to shut it the fuck down. I think thats mission number 1. Stopping the dumb stuff. Lets do sumthing about that first. Get past the nonsense so people can see the actual “game” underneath.

I agree. I think that by now L L L LMHH, should be the least used combo in anyone’s gameplay. For one you have a harshly scaled combo and plus I feel it doesn’t promote anything high level. Yes it is one of the safest ways to tag out, but I feel the use of raw launchers on lows and hit confirming into launcher, could be used much much more. While I’m not a tourney player or anything, these are things I have seen that could push the tech of this game. And also raw tagging and eating 40% combos could be avoided with knowing your character’s options, which I don’t think people have delved into beyond boost combos.

thats great and all but the problem is “playing it right” in sfxt, as infiltration and laugh demonstrated, means playing even more boring than top american players are willing to. sorry but sfxt isn’t going to have a moment like these:

where some amazing shit is shown to an unsuspecting audience for the first time. the game just isn’t built for it.

End walk forward jab supremacy

I disagree, once people dive a little more deep beyond Ryu and Rolento, we might get something nice. And the only thing that really stood out was the Aegis Reflector, since it seemed like it was the first time that kind of tech was shown. The Yun vid was kinda meh, and not because we see Genei Jin all the time.

Maybe they played that way cuz no one was strong enough to get them to stop. No one in top 8 was on their level at all. Also may i ask…honestly why are you still here? if u dont think the game has what it takes to be hype thats fine. but you arent really contributing to the thread.

The thing about SFxT is that there’s really no need to dive deeper than Ryu/Rolento because all the stuff they have is strictly better, and it’s not difficult to execute.

Thats just it…i dont think Ryu and Rolento are the best. Just EASY. I think Sagat is better, Raven, Chun-li, prolly Juri too and maybe even Kazuya. And I think there are alot of people that play this game that agree.

Get that nonsense out of here, why everyone isnt playing Wesker/Wolverine/Sentinel in Marvel? Why is there more than 3 characters or 2 in SFxT? Think about it…

Raven, Kazuya, Chun-Li, Juri, Jin, Hwoarang, Steve, Lili… a lot of characters in this game have great amounts of tools and options we just haven’t explored – and its not anyone’s fault, the problem falls on the fact no one is currently playing.

Granted, all of us are playing – but what I mean is that it takes hundreds of players to open a game up and reveal its inner workings. Look at how much new and crazy technology appears for Marvel on a regular basis – that’s purely because there are so many people playing and unlocking SFxTK’s true potentially is going to depend on bringing in new players.

Our best bet is for the 25th anniversary tournament and the DLC release to bring players in to help open the game up a bit. There’s plenty of tech to be discovered in the game – we just need more people to help expand and explore it.

I dunno, people were super hype for Ross and Combofiend’s Cross Assault combo and it was kind of average. You gotta sell Cross Assault or Pandora and that makes things hype, although especially for the latter it is very difficult.

I guess I’ll keep working on my King thing. Problem is it is getting really rather long. Now it has character overview, how he functions as a teammate, general psychology when playing him, and listing virtually all his useful moves/tools and how to utilize them. I wonder if people will sit down to read all that stuff.

I also feel kinda bad since I’m rocking Ken/Nina as a team now.

I do, but then again, I’m studying and learning all of the characters.

I feel kind of attached to Kazuya because I’ve put so much work into him but I may or may not drop him when the DLC lands. I say go with what makes you happy gameplay wise.

I’d say a good 60% of the Tekken cast is pretty polished. I would like tweaks to improve quality of life while using them and the rest need some overhauls on select attacks.

I can’t be the only one right? How many times have you attempted to pressure using a Tekken character, only to get randomly jumped on? You know it’s because they tuned the Tekken character attacks with a plethora of disadvantage on block… that needs to be rectified.

If you look, a lot of the broken characters in the game are on the SF side – I think what happend is Capcom made the game based on the a combination of engines (primarily Darkstalkers and Alpha), built it around the functionality of the Tekken characters, then exported the SF characters from SSF4 and put them into the engine hoping it would work. I imagine if you adjusted the SF side, you’d actually find the game a lot more balanced overall – its not so much the Tekken characters are lacking – its like this.

Imagine the two games as a set of paper puppets and sets. To make SFxTK, Capcom had someone draw things similar to SSF4, but without actually looking at it. Then they made the tekken characters and put them on top of SFxTK backgrounds.

The issue is that they took a screen capture of SSF4 after that, and instead of re-drawing the characters, they cut out the screen captured characters and put them on the SFxTK background – problem’s occurred because the SSF4 cutouts are actually bigger than the SFxTK cutouts, so they don’t fit perfectly into the game system, and now Capcom has to tweak the entire thing to try and get everything to fit in properly.

They mistuned a lot of the frame data IMO.
