^^ Yeah… Ex Drill gets stuffed by jab jab jab jab jab jab jab jab. Sucks.
But man… Rose’s wakeup game sucks. Hope we can find something. I guess just never get knocked down with her for now…

Block… yes you would eat tick throw. But the wake up backdash has invuln frames. I surely haven’t played ultradavid level zangiefs yet, but i’ve watch many of them whiff tick wakeup SPD’s because I backdashed out. in the corner I still get trounced pretty good though.
I was unaware the wakeup dash had invul frames - that’s definitely something worth trying out…
Ideally there’d be something that can actually threaten people who’re standing in Rose’s wakeup hitbox - but I’d say getting away is better than guessing at block or tech-counter for now.
only backdash, and it has only a few frames. it’s the not greatest, but anytime I throw an ill timed LP spark and zangief hops it before i can AA, i backdash the hell out of there.
edit: again I’m not sure if the backdash will come out fast enough to get away from meaty attacks. But because meaties suck in this game and zangief will want to tick off a low jab there is probably a good chance you will sneak away.
I don’t know if this is too newbish to be useful, but…
Soul Throw will knock Ryu out of a Hurricane Kick.
Soul Spiral beats Blanka’s electricity.
Hyphz - I’ve had it happen - but have not been able to counter hurricane kicks with it 100% of the time… Do you know of a particular power (jab, med, fierce) that has a better chance of hitting?
While we’re discussing soul throw, has anybody else noticed they can often get hit out of it by Ryu or Ken’s jumping med/roundhouse???
I often like to punish people jumping towards me at match start with it, but every now & then I’ll lose the priority battle to a jump-kick (?!)
Yes, these things have been mentioned numerous times in other threads and probably this thread. Her throws have no super armor, if their kick is out, you will probably lose. Similarly you have to luck out and soul throw while the foot is facing away on a whirlwind kick. (easiest on Ryu since he spins slowly).
In all cases except empty jumps and VERY early reactions, Cr.hp is better.
EX soul throw has no armor, and will not absorb hits. It just moves faster/further. No increased damage
Rose’s Wake-up options
Can any of the soul reflects be used as wakeups/reversals if the opponent isn’t jumping in/crossing you up?
Unless the opponent is mindless and is just standing there I don’t think it would be wise to do the reflect. I don’t know about the startup or invulnerability of it, but I can’t see how its a better option that many other things. Wake up specials aren’t rose’s speciality, and if you absolutely have to do one, I would use drill. If you have been knocked down and are recovering there is a decent chance you have taken some damage and thus have ultra. If they are insistent to attack you when you are getting up just wakeup ultra them. I have landed wake up ultra on idiots so many times its crazy.
How are the priorities on soul reflects? If they are high enough it could have more use than just reflect FBs (I am not really sure on this tbh, h. soul reflect was a moot but fun flashy AA.)
its not that high ive traded or been flat out beat by some moves trying to do it.
For her Soul Throw if I MUST use it or feel the need to, I’ll try to make sure I catch someone at the peak of their jump or as they are going up. Of course I was pretty much waiting for a jump so it’s more of a baited thing than a reacted to thing. It’s really hard to catch someone with Soul Throw if they are coming down while hitting a button cause you’re just gonna get knocked out of it.
I use EX Soul Throw for characters that go REALLY high cause I can’t get them with the regular Soul Throw.
Does anyone use Reflect as one of their AA attacks? I’ve had decent success with it.
For things that Soul Throw or cr.fierce won’t beat, I’ve found that df+forward (slide) to throw works quite well.
Her ultra is okay. Lame how you cannot combo into it at all. And in that vid, I really doubt the guy reacted to Ryu’s fireball, more like he either knew he was going to do it or just threw the move out there.
Well it’s only way I know of to combo into her Ultra. Because her EX Soul Spark FA is a free stun (at least it combos in the corner). I’m trying to work it into a fight but that input is pretty hard haha. But it’s a very good thing cause I don’t know any other characters that can get FREE FA for a crumple.
Has anyone else been able to do this?
ShamWOW
Rose does not suck
Sagat and Chun can do it. They have a FA combo in their hard trials too.
No one is saying she sucks.
Great thread, thanks.
I don’t disagree
Soul Throw isn’t a very good anti-air attack. Unless you can predict the jump, you’ll usually end up being hit out of it.
Soul Spiral isn’t a very good move overall. It’s Rose’s best move to combo into, but it isn’t safe at all, and throwing it out without having it confirmed first is asking for trouble.
Soul Spark is a terrible fireball. The start up and recovery on all versions is pretty unforgiving, and I’ve found that if you combo into it and even hit your opponent with it, they can reverse into super/ultra and make you pay.
Reflect has very strict timing, and isn’t really practical from close distances unless you can predict the fireball coming. Since you can only really use it from almost a full screen’s distance, any opponent with a brain can effectively counter it.
Rose has no good anti-air attacks in general. C.HP is her only one, and the range on it is severely lacking. Since the recovery time is very unforgiving, I find myself sometimes baited into it with an empty jump-in and punished by an ultra.
Rose has nothing on wake-up. You can EX-Drill if you have meter, but that’s not a very good attack, considering that the invincibility is very short and she can be jabbed out of it.
There is no real way to land Rose’s ultra outside of after a focus attack. It can be used as anti-air sometimes, but the timing on this is quite sporadic, and I get blocked more often than not. It’s not very good for punishing fireballs, even if you predict them coming out, because the end result is usually being hit out of it by the fireball.
There aren’t very many ways to land her super either. You can juggle after HP Reflect, but good luck getting one of those in with the range on that thing.
Rose’s normals are pretty ranged, but the recovery isn’t really great on them, meaning that when someone jumps over it, I whiff and have to block the jump-in. This way I’m stuck dealing with the mix-up that follows.
In lieu of all this, I hereby officially resign from Rose. The lady is not for me.
gets up from the table
I’d have to agree with above poster. I’m not abandoning her yet, but she’s just not terribly practical. So far, I haven’t found anything she can do that’s any better than other characters. Her pokes are the only good thing about her imo. Throw range seems good.
Even if Soul Throw was better, it’s not a true DP and we can’t cancel it with Focus if we guess wrong. Crouching fierce’s horizontal range is almost nonexistant…
I have to agree on reflects. The only one worth using is jab imo for the meter.
