Rolento General Discussion

The back flip roll (triple punches) is great for frame trap happy people.

thank god, i thought i’d be the only one having trouble with cody… Oo that one dude stunned me in 2 combos… j.hp, cr.hp, bingo… or something like that

Just some stuff from trying out Rolento,

For anyone who doesn’t know, his anti air is a poke
Y for X360, Triangle for the PS3

He has the best focus attack which makes up for his less range and speed compared to SFxTK.
His jumping heavy punch though has less range than it looks.

For mix up I wouldn’t bother with the light pokes that require light timing, I’d just go with crouching medium kick, forgot if his spinning stick is safe on block but if it is you might as well.

Its probably his only good AA. It isn’t the kind of AA you just whip out when they jump though.

I’d like to use PPP to get out of frame traps but after the first normal, they’ll catch me with a second.

Character is ballsack.

agreed. kind of. i mean, he has DECENT mobility, but the problem is all of his “mobility” is slow and you just end up getting fucked.

Count me in, I’m also free to cody right now.
The worst part is there’s a good selection of characters who can bully much better than cody. I main yun and I know what his pressure is like, imagine a good yun vs rolento…

Feels like he has the same wakeup weakness vega has. I’d imagine we’re all gonna have a bad time vs rushdown characters.

Still, I think rolento has the potential to be a pretty solid character when played well.

I’m out.

what a shitty fuckin’ character.

kidding. still gonna play because apparently I just love to play shit-tier characters.

then i’ll probably quit a month later. like I did with Super and AE.

He reminds me so much of Cody/Vega in many ways, except with even worse wakeup and way shittier frame traps.

Just confirmed that you cannot punish Ryu’s SRK FADC Forward with U2

You sure? I tested it now in training at diff angles, I’m definitely fadcing asap and i mashed out a dp after the forward dash, i held block, etc, u2 reversal beats em all

u2 is 7f startup.

Comparing your guy’s impressions to mine, I share a lot of the same opinions. To me Rolento feels more like a Vega/Guy type of character without the reach/pokes. Since he has crappy special mobility moves and a weird air trajectory altering move (pogo).

I feel like with Rolento I have to try to abuse pogo as much as I can because his footsies aren’t really all that great. His walk speed is atrocious, so I find myself taking to the air more often. I haven’t found any sort of worthwhile “set-play” or setups with him so far. Ending in patriot just resets the situation.

Also standing hp sucks. It seems like it can trade with other moves. I suspect his hurtbox is partially extended on the staff.

And with no invincible patriot, I am feeling free on knockdown and have to rely on DWU and backdash. Though, I’m thinking if it did have invincibility, you could use patriot as a sort of anti air into ultra (sorta like current Rufus EX Messiah).

Mind you, I never played a version of Rolento before Ultra (was more of a Vega player), so feel free to disregard my opinion on him.

Record Ryu performing MP DP xx FADC Fwd xx Block (5 seconds)
Playback
Reversal timing U2 with Rolento

Edit: In addition, the numbers are clear about it.

MP FADC = -5f on block
Rolento U2 = 7f start up

-5+7=+2

That means he has 2 frames of blocking before the U2 will hit.

I don’t know if this has already been discovered but i’ve found a fantastic and easy meaty for rolento. Forward throw, forward jump, close mk.

The mk hits on the absolute last frame, and its so positive on hit that you can link either ultra afterwards, or go into a huge combo. Also if the opponent does DWU the mk recovers in time and you might even have enough time to go for a meaty jab.

I can’t believe how much they’ve nerfed his pogo and wall jump compared to previous games. I feel like rolento has gone from the most mobile SF character to fairly below average in that regard.

Characters do not all have the same wakeup speed after a forward throw. Are you just walking until you’re touching whatever character when doing this and finding it to be relatively universal?
Anyway, the primary reason I bothered with Ultra was for Rolento, but now I think I am just going to use him as a “fun” character and for serious matches, stick with Akuma and possibly E. Ryu. It’s still way too early to completely dismiss him, but he does feel really half-baked for the SF4 engine.

I’ve only tested it on Ryu and Cammy, and they have fairly standard hitboxes but different wakeup timings so it should work on at least 3/4 of the cast, if not all. I don’t know what you mean by “Are you just walking until you’re touching whatever character when doing this and finding it to be relatively universal?”, the st.mk is done immediately after landing the empty forward jump, there are no waiting frames or visual cues, you just press mk on the first frame you land.

Damn bad impressions already. Free on wake up sucks. Well fun char it is then.

Try doing it on Sagat if you want to know what I’m talking about. I haven’t looked at Rolento’s frame data, but unless his cs.forward stays active for days, you would definitely have to adjust the way you are doing the meaty on Sagat and a few others. Character wake up varies by +1 to -2.

For all the people who say rolento is completely free on wake up, have u tried PPP?? Its pretty invisible, u can flip out of counter hit setups and wake up etc. Ur opponent has to os with a move tht hits him out of the air but hey at least your of the pressure.
