Rocket League: The Official Thread

Rocket League fundamentals? hmmm i can try, im no pro but i win way more than i lose so…

-boost only to clear the ball or to chase it when its going into your zone. you almost never need the boost on offense in my experience.
-learn how godlike neutral jump is to stop an opponents pass/shot. especially if they hit it hard
-corner defense, center offense. make her repeat this til she says it in her fucken sleep lol. keep the ball in the corner when its in your zone and away formt he corner on offense
-learn the best ways to clear the ball.
sending it flying down field: best
rolling it around the corner then sending it flying downfield: great
bouncing it off the wall next to the goal: good
bouncing it off the side wall into the center of the field: risky af
-keep field position in her head at all times. DONT SOCRE ON YOURSELF YOULL FEEL STUPID AND YOUR TEAM WILL THINK YOURE STUPID

offensive stuff
-learn how to play whatever role she wants to fill
is she gonna be aggro? learn how to hit the ball to the center of the field, kind of the reverse of the concept on defense. learn how to set up someone playing center from the corners. especially if she can learn how to center it when all 3 niggas ont he other team thirsty and coming at her in the corner its a free goal
is she gonna be patient? learn how to sit back and wait for the chance and what positions are best to score from
and also learn how to let someone else be aggro if they reach the ball first

[list=1]
[] Tumble instead of boosting to advance
[
] Tumble backwards when you’re on the retreat to block the goal faster
[] Bouncing the ball off the side walls instead of the back walls when centering gives your team a better chance at finishing
[
] NEVER play the ball across your own goal
[] NEVER chase the ball
[
] Get into the habit of flying when you’re in a 50/50 bounce with an opponent
[] Use ball cam whenever you’re not facing the ball
[
] Find the 100% boost points along the tramlines when there’s a dog pile - keep that meter full
[] Play “down the line” i.e. only hit a ball if you can play it forward - if you can’t hit it, retreat “down the line” in the direction of your goal so you can beat/block at the next bounce “don’t go to the puck, go to where the puck is going to be”
[
] Use autochat “I got it!”, “Centering”, “Defending” ALL THE TIME when you’re not on headset
[] If there’s nobody in goal, you should probably be in goal
[
] As goalie, if the ball’s in their end, don’t go past midfield unless the ball is played to you
[] Boost is for flying, winning 50/50s, demolition, clearing and striking from the halfway line. Nothing else.
[
] You’re not Kronovi. Get off the wall.
[] Always loop around instead of stopping/bouncing into a wall. Conserve your momentum.
[
] If a team-mate is striking at the goal from the right, why the hell are you also on the right too? Get to the left wing, cover the far post incase they miss.
[] When defending, if you don’t think you can hit the ball in time, hit the opponent HARD
[
] Hit any static opponent - they’re waiting for something
[] If you’re going goalie from kick-off, you can typically hit 2 boost pads before you absolutely HAVE to be on the goal line
[
] As Goalie, stay on the line as much as possible and don’t clear anything that involves coming out of the box
[] The most controlled way to hit the ball is with a single jump just below the middle of the ball. Tumbling every time makes you look thirsty as hell and will send the ball into the air (into 50/50s) a lot more frequently.
[
] Non-directional double jumps are the silver bullet of goalkeeping
[] If you don’t know what you’re supposed to be doing in the current set-play, get in goal or destroy an opponent
[
] Sticking the ball in any corner is a great way to run out the timer

Just want to go into strategy about this part a bit, as it’s interesting point.

Back wall, next to the goal is a great spot, provided you’re 100% sure your team-mate will score. If I’m playing with a mate on a headset, I almost always go for this. If they say “Got Center” before I have to say “Get Center” then it’s on.

If they’re hesitant, or if I’m playing with strangers online, I bounce it off the wall/across the goal instead.

Why? If you hit it off the back and they miss, then you and your buddy are both left on the defending side of the ball (the “wrong” side), with your opponents, while the ball bounces back towards the center-line…and YOUR goal.

Playing the ball in across the goal, rather than against the back wall (which technically means sending the ball away from the goal) grants your buddy a bigger bite of the cherry, and despite it also giving the defenders a better chance, the odds are still in your favor as your teammate is coming in from further out than the defenders and therefore has better manipulation of the ball.

Furthermore, you’re not left powerless from a pass like this, like you are when you pass from the back wall - you’re still part of the offence and can loop around much easier to help with the attack. Bounce it in, get behind your team-mate and get ready to finish the ball if they miss. You can also take this time to take out their goalie.

Both great plays, but you have to pick your moments.

Uploading a clip. Scored 800 (4 goals?). I got 2 upon hitting the ball once at the countdown. If anyone can perfect that, it should prove to be pretty broken.

I played a game where I blocked 3 shots at one time. idk how that is possible tho

She’s slowly improving as far as positioning and tunneling a bit less. She’s at least on par with the decent “semi-pros” and a sub par “pro” , but she has a small grasp of things now, at the very least aware that she knows what to improve.
She’s generally up front as the playmaker but occasionally goes as a makeshift goalie whenever I take initiative after a clear or if I see an opening which is great, she’s has that part of court vision down at the least. We do the whole goalie swap after either of us goes for the clear.

She just need to be able to break open competent goalies with another team mate since i’m generally handling defense. Teams that just go all 3 to ball the whole game are practically free… usually, I don’t really count those since it’s more like just anti-airing dudes in sf when they do nothing but jump. I can save like 5 times a match but it’s only inevitable that i’ll eventually make the wrong read if our offense is too predictable to get past a decent goalie.

You block the ball, then it bounces back to your opponent and goes back and forth. Happens alot when you sandwich the ball at the goal. Same thing happens for the Shot at goal accolade.

My local FGC is starting to get super into this game.
Easy to see why when it’s the hypest shit ever.

Still learning, but my PSN is MundyCinderella if people are trying to do some games.

Well the developers do want to go e-sports with it. The next update coming this month will be coming with a spectator mode.

I can’t wait for that new arena they’re putting in. It looks like it won’t be like a regular arena as well. Their first game had many different configurations in their arenas.

I believe ESL or someone similar jumped on eSports licensing for this game right after launch.

Edit: YEP

Patch is now Live!

This was supposed to re-roll the rankings too, but the news window says they’ll now be announcing Season 1 "at a later date"
Got some bonus free items and the new arena as an apology for “SeverGate” (Got a D/C Icon, some Skull wheels and a White Flag) plus all the new achievements and purchasable stuff is now up for grabs too if you want it.

Quite like the Pontiac GTO looking one, but can’t justify more money on this game just yet.

NOTE: When the re-roll DOES come, does anyone fancy setting up some SRK teams for the Season? I’m game for playing for 2v2 and 3v3 SRK Teams on Steam

Haven’t gotten on since Tuesday. Can’t wait to kick these guys some money.

was gonna go on but my tv died

This game has been frustrating me to no end as of late. Every time i hit the ball for some reason it acts super weird. Ok maybe not everytime but its happened a bunch of times. I speed boost hit the ball and the ball instead of going the other direction just stops. And the other team just comes along and punts it in. An other one was last night i hot the ball and it somehow rolls over my car and starts going faster in the other direction. It also always seems the ball always conveniently lands softly right infront of the other team. Like the ball physics are not always on point. But its annoying that the other team scores because the ball just happens to bounce off thw wall into my teammate over everyone right into the net… Its like wtf

No they def did something to hitboxes when i jump to forward hit it its instead going straight up alot more.

Could just be my timing but doesnt feel that way

Im glad im not the only one. I will admit im not the best at the game. And im not a physisist… But i know that if i hit a ball at high speed it will go in that direction lol.

The game also feels alot buggier since they put up the patch

It’s most likely ping related, and how unforgiving the physics are in this game when you hit the ball. After playing at the higher reaches of matchmaking, i’m slowly noticing the limitations of having 70-90 ping. Occasionally I’d straight up see roll back when the ball is close to trading but gets beat out by a split second.

Especially notice it as a goalie, i’d double jump and I’m almost sure I’d nick the ball but it goes through then on the replay, it shows me a fair bit off.

As far unpredictable shit like the ball bouncing on team mates into your own net, it’s the equivalent of the ball hitting the net in Tennis and tumbles on your end, shit happens. Fortunately it can also happen to your opponents, I suppose it’s natural RNG that comes with these kinds of sports.

More on the physics of hitting the ball, the game leaves no exceptions. You have to hit it absolutely clean after ping gets accounted for. Even being off by a bit might send it off in a slightly different direction. I’ve blocked shots and realized my positioning was just a tiny bit too far forward but it was enough for the ball to hit the inner half of the car and bounce inwards to the goal instead of outwards.

Only thing I can’t exactly predict is bounce physics at times, and I mean like the height and angle when it hits the ground. So many different interactions that causes different bounces, like if it hits the ceiling it fast falls.

But yeah the more I play the game, the more difficult it gets for me. The competition in this game even on just casual matchmaking is intense. So much good players out there that are on consistently. Running into more Veterans where before I never even thought it was a rank, apparently there’s still higher ranks than that. Ranks are just based on time spent mostly but even still. I’m seeing more consistent off the wall plays, flying to beat 50/50 trades is pretty common, being in the goalie position is even more brutal as hell since everyone is much more coordinated and has plenty of anti goalie strats… etc…

Not counting the unpredictable factor of the ball going in 4-5 other parts of the goal, can sometimes be tough or impossible to react to. Recently realized that I’d have to take more risks myself to avoid those situations. It’s sorta the equivalent of “you can’t block forever”

Good thing is that the matchmaking is somewhat working, bad thing is that for the more slower learning players like my gf, they might have a hard time catching up. It’s such a simple game but it’s pretty brutal up here lol.

The more i play this game the easier it is for me, the problem is the worse my teammates are. Teamwork is everything at the higher levels

Finding those 2 teammates that u vibe perfectly with=Kreygasm

i haven’t played for a week and i just got back on again.
it’s like i’m back on square 1 , lol. can’t even friggin hit the ball anymore.

yea. I noticed people leveled up hardcore lately. Every match I play now is on some intense world championship thing when before it was like 4 awful people who just hit the ball randomly, and 2 other people who knew what they were doing.
