RIP. Tough lost today, I grew up watching him. RW will forever be an all-time great comedian and actor for me.
Finally agree with you on something.
But it’s not just that, it’s just something that there’s no cut and dry treatment. With various physical ailments, there’s treatments followed up by alternative medicines to use in cases of allergic reactions. Pretty formulaic. Mental illness, on the other hand, of course there’s the potential for allergies, but then the fact that these different chemical treatments effect people differently. So you could prescribe Zoloft for someone depressed, and it may help, but then you have to go down the line in a trial and error style to determine what works if it has no effect or makes matters worse, meanwhile the sufferer goes through a roller coaster of sorts, and it’s not a fun one at all.
Doubly so when you get into stuff like Bipolar Disorder (of which Robin Williams suffered), schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder. Shit, there are people where chemical treatment doesn’t have an effect on. Then you have cognitive behavioral therapy, which can help some, but in the most severe cases, it is still recommended to use medication to elevate their levels enough to make them function and/or pull them out of suicidal ideations.
Even when they are properly medicated, there are still issues. There may not be as much stigma now (and believe me, if you look at some of the support groups for bipolar disorder, that one in itself has a HUGE stigma attached to it in the general public’s eye), but there can be a perceived stigma from the sufferer, perhaps a sense of paranoia that people are judging them because of what they’re going through. Plus, there’s a risk that people will come off their medication when they feel like they’re better, when in reality, their levels are properly balanced WITH the medicine and dropping off of the medication is only going to hurt them. Or, and this is a big one, is that a lot of people will feel drugged up and like a robot on the medicine, and would rather feel down than emotionless.
TL;DR: You’re partially right, but there’s more to it that makes mental illness harder to get treated for.
People doing what “feels good” rather than what actually helps? No way!
The surprising amount of people who view depression as mere emotional weakness and selfishness might indicate otherwise. I agree though, spreading awareness isn’t the ONLY thing, but without awareness, nobody would even care to lobby for beating back the healthcare tyrants. And as missing said above, drugs aren’t the only or even sometimes any cure.
Fuck man, too many of my childhood heroes are dying this year. RIP Robin Williams.
Depression+Addiction problem has to be one of the most deadly combination especially in this day of age. It’s a vicious cycle. Makes you question what else can possibly be missing in his life that it needs to this way? I’m sure he has money, family, friends and tons of fans around the world.
Third world countries and communities are shocked by the deaths of their comedians as well.
I realized it might be talking about Robin’s problems specifically, but I found it more likely that the pic is talking about everybody’s reaction.
Depression happens everywhere dudes. First world, third world, etc
Comedians are like neglected doctors…they treat our misery with the best medicine…but nobody’s there for THEIR misery. The doctors have no doctors for themselves.
actually, his family situation and money situation were pretty rough. He left his wife for his nanny, and his wife took him to the cleaners. I think he had two divorces, too, and that shit costs money. He was probably forced to work, instead of retire, just so his lazy ass women could keep up the lifestyle.
Something about this post annoys me, but I’m not sure what. So I’m gonna throw my thoughts at the wall and see if it provides me an answer.
Nobody is there to treat their misery? Is a comedian forbidden from laughing at a joke because of their profession? No. They can watch a stand up show and get just as much out of it as somebody else on a shitty day. Next, if he had problems with the bottle, he should’ve sought help. He his a damn millionaire. He could’ve afforded the best in rehab services. A doctor can’t treat a patient who doesn’t want help. He was a widely loved human being, there was nothing he couldn’t have if it would’ve helped him feel better. People around the world would bend over backwards to help the guy out.
Depression stems from the drink because it is a depressant. If rooted out the alcoholism the depression would be next on deck to be cured. I fucking loved Williams. But don’t be in here trying to make philosophical posts like an idiot teenager on Facebook.
the fact is a lot of comedians get into comedy, because that IS the only laughing point in their life.
Look at the list of comedians who have committed suicide over the years, not counting the ones that overdosed on drugs to the point where it’s the same as suicide.
Behind almost every comedian is a person who got molested, or bullied, or teased, their entire childhood.
Its so sad to hear that a man who brought so much laughter to people was crying on the inside. The one actor who could make any movie he was in 100x better will be missed by us all. RIP Mr. Williams and thank you for laughs that you us and the many more we will have from the brilliant performances that you left behind.
I hope this sends a message to those that are depressed, please…PLEASE get help. Talk to somebody, reach out and say “I’m hurting and I don’t know what to do!” so the people around you can help. Don’t fight this alone, get the help that you need because you are special to somebody. Everybody is special to somebody.
It’s so sad the so many comedians, that devote their lives to laughter, have to deal with depression.
I had the Mork & Mindy toy jeep given to me by my parents as my Christmas present back in 1979.
worst
Christmas
present
Ever.
Hated it!
Realized early on there was no Santa Claus upon unwrapping that present.
“If Santa was real”, I thought, “there would be no way he would give this, as a gift to a young boy.”
just wanted to share that intimate true story with all of you.
