This is an…extremely shitty thing that I didn’t expect to happen in 2015 despite expecting this year to be shitty. Weirdly I was thinking about him a week or so ago because I was reading through some notes I had taken from a two-hour long or so video that was just he and Sebiel talking with each other about game design.
It’s a damn shame too given the obvious amount of talent he had too on top of seeming like a legitimately nice guy from what little I knew of him. I first heard about him through Dead Fantasy as well, and while I didn’t expect him to ever finish Dead Fantasy after he thankfully got scouted, I didn’t expect it to be something like this.
Rest in peace.
Ugh. This is why I’m so paranoid about anytime someone gets anesthetized–it’s too easy for shit like this to randomly happen. It’s why I didn’t even let them put me under when I got my wisdom teeth removed, especially since my body already acts weirdly when it comes to medication.
If anything, then this manages to make his death even worse. Damn.
Someone replied on our front page article pointing out that Monty also used to be part of the Tekken community over at Tekken Zaibatsu and used to play alot back in the day at Tilt Arcade in Warwick, Rhode Island.
I was completely shocked when I first heard the news on twitter earlier. His work from Dead Fantasy to RWBY were incredibly amazing stuff which goes to show how talented that man is, along with the fact that he was an inspiration to me as well and it’s sad to hear that he is gone.
Funny how a death can make somebody famous, never heard of this dude or his work and now that Ive had a chance to watch some of it, well shit what a waste. RIP.
Wow so sad I’m speechless as this guy was so damn talented. Rip Monty. goes off to plug up external hard drive and watch everything in my Monty Oum folder*
I like RWBY more than anime “new” anime/toon show out there.
I know people since day one try to hate on that show calling it a video game and not a “real” anime…but if you ever watch it it has great fun fighting sequences and had alotta fashion sense and great character designs.
also
isn’t RWBY called RWBY because of colors involved with 4 different characters? Red, White, Black, Yellow?
at least my tablet’s homescreen wallpaper alludes to this.
I remember Dead Fantasy. Very good stuff. I’m also wondering, was Monty the same person who did this animated short where the main character had a fighting style combination of Akuma and Hworang from Tekken? I remember seeing it on SRK years ago but since then I can’t seem to find it.
like the interview gets very insightful at around the 10 minute mark. of how Monty went from working at Kinkos to being a game designer/animator.
fantastic interview while they play DOA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qc-IUQniAHo
Really sad. He was a really cool interesting person it seemed with great talents. Big Roosterteeth fan here, pretty upset by it all. It looks like he had some weird allergic reaction during routine medical procedure? Maybe reaction to anesthetic?
He reacted during a “routine medical procedure” so I think it’s more likely he had a severe reaction to an allergy scratch test. Either way this is really sad, you could tell he loved his work and was genuinely happy.
All of Monty’s work was amazing. The fight scenes in RvB were my favorite. Especially the Tex vs Reds and Blues episode in season 8. And the food fight in RWBY.
There was a fan made RWBY game that Monty announced at RTX back in July that he and the creator were going to complete. They had a demo on their site available for sponsors. I don’t know if its still there though.
when I think that this guy went from being a high school drop out working at a Kinkos to having his show(RWBY) …finding its way to being put on Crunchyroll is a huge accomplishment!
wow. just wow.
What an amazing feat of accomplishments in such a short amount of time.
Amazing guy. I feel like a really lazy do nothing right now.
