"Ring Her Out!" - Soul Calibur IV Finals Discussion

Hm that’s a good point — I can kinda see with Hilde that while the release attacks are so sick, it’s kind of a double-edged sword because you almost have to use them or else you’re not playing right. People’s defense against it will get better and better.

Bottom line for me though is that the RO potential off one hit causes too much of a disparity between Hilde and the rest of the cast. It would be like Astaroth doing 90% from a throw. I’m not gonna fault people from using Hilde to win but like I said earlier, I’m all for Namco doing a patch to fix her.

HAhaaha, Richard Ri and I were like…since people hate Hilde so much for her cheapness…Why don’t WE create another scenario and side with evil…then came the “RING HER OUT” YESSS!!

thx for the props on the commentary, I was the SC guy for the live stream. I’m glad it helped give you guys some insight to what is a very solid game high level.

Thanks for watching and hopefully sc4 can be back next year ^^

Well that is really the only reason the game had hype, because there was a bad guy. Watching Omega the Zas player play a perfect round, get hit once, and lose, made a lot of people disgusted with the game, then KDZ comes around and plays flawlessly 2 hilde players in a row…thats hype.

Richard F’n Ri screaming out shit was the best part of Evo. Period.

Guy in front: Hilde’s a BITCH!
R Li: FUCK YOU! RING OUT THAT SHIT! KNOCK HIM OUT, CEIRNIAN!
Guy in front: She’s still a bitch!
R Li: Ring her out! RING HER OUT!
Left side crowd: RING HER OUT! RING HER OUT! RING HER OUT!..
Right side crowd: (weak ass boo)
R Li: FUCK YOU!!!

Richard had me laughing so hard, my eyes were tearing!

Fuck this game! It’s too hype at high level play!

The ring out mechanic isn’t the problem, at least not as an overall game mechanic. It really strengthens the spacing and ring control dynamic, and allows for clutch comebacks if the opponent isn’t careful. It also plays heavily into the throw breaking mixups in a lot of situations.

Hilde’s ring out distance isn’t even the issue. It’s that the ring outs come from such safe, powerful moves that also have extra properties such as tech crouch and auto GI that causes her to be such a problem.

Namco took doom combo out of the PSP version, but I’m not sure they even needed to. May have been better served to tweak the other properties of those moves. In any case, now it’s just a matter of whether or not we see these changes on console.

Too bad this game will prolly get the boot for Tekken next year. EVO needs more ring outs imo.

If we see a patch on consoles, it’s perfectly reasonable to believe that the interest will be strong enough to pull these kinds of attendance numbers again.

lol the problem isnt the doom combo

its evo allowing multiple button binds which allows for the gayest strategies ever:

pad hilde = map shoulders to A and B, like L1 to A and R1 to B. this way you hold the shoulders for the charge moves and you still get access to the face buttons on the pad which have a free A and B button.

you can use the face buttons (while holding the shoulders) to break throws and do pokes like 2a and what not when you are in trouble. pushing a face button does break the charge while holding the shoulders, but knowing this, you can easily just turtle up some more and gain access to the doom combo again in short time, all the while still having access to A and B moves.

its like being able to hold boxer TAP and still being able to use jabs, sweeps and throws (and tech throws zomg) and a 2-3 second TAP is death.

japan doesnt think this is a problem because no one plays pad hilde there. stick users galore.

anygay, evos over and cernians a choke master.

actually, last weekend there was an sc4 tournament in tokyo and a pad hilde won. nobody boo’d, but when he won rounds nobody cheered either. they cheered when his opponents won rounds though.

noel uses hilde, but refuses to use her on pad for the reasons mentioned. kilomili uses her too, but i cant recall if he uses a pad or not.

Most people who cry about Hilde’s RO’s don’t play the game seriously and have always complained about RO’s. If Hilde wasn’t around they’ll probably think Nightmare or Astaroth or some other character is broken because they can utilize an instant win mechanic. These are the same people who say that Marvel is bad because Cable can viper beam, don’t bother with them.

Cedric, even though my boys were booing the Hildes, I was pulling for ya. Still think the button maps should be illegal, but I’m not going to hate on the player for it.

GJ making Evo more hype, now go get 'em at Nats! =)

CHarles youre my hero for scIV finals, Was Aris commentating recorded anywhere?

dont understand why people were bitching about ring outs. if i were playing id do the exact same thing, ESPECIALLY if there was money on the line. fuck honor.

Truth. I hear they like no-throw Super Turbo as well. That shit is FAIR.

Edit – This is fucking roflgator. I have a crapton of negative rep for defending the Calibur community’s bannings (more for uniformity than anything) back before Evo, now I’m getting negative rep for defending Hilde being ALLOWED? SHIT IS TOO FUNNY!

-shrug- All those matches probably turned off thousands of people from playing the game. It just kills the interest in the series, period.

And at the same time, there were probably a bunch that got interested. I know I was entertained when Hilde was on stage and I hate SC.

I have to admit myself, after seeing the SC4 finals (and knowing virtually nothing about SC series), I was tempted to go to bestbuy and pick the game up.

You can probably find it for fairly cheap, it’d be worth it. There’s a lot of solid mechanics and mindgames going on that people just don’t see, for whatever reason. I guess if you wanted to cite balance issues as being a reason not to buy a fighting game, your choices would be pretty limited.
