Retro Gaming Thread

the creator just said something along the lines of him not wanting to work on the series anymore ,but that he didn’t mind if others (even fans) wanted to continue it.

3-button Genesis pad was for scrubs, it’s like people complaining about the Xbox/360 controller for fighting games when they should just get a stick instead. There were a bunch of 6-button pads available for the Genesis, and the default Sega one (precursor to the Saturn controller) was really good IIRC. Best pad for fighting games at the time.

Anyone else have one of these?

The official Capcom arcade stick for Genesis/SNES. I picked one up in a pawn shop for like $25 in like 1998, it’s how I made the transition from pad to stick. It was also really good IIRC, apparently the stick was a Seimitsu clone.

Hey! The 3-button Genesis pad was pretty awesome back in the day. Sweet & simple, functional, comfortable, elegant retro design, etc.

The 6-button does have a better D-pad though.

I thought the D-pad on the 6 button was the same as the 3 button?

Nope! The original’s d-pad is shaped differently, feels different in its operation, has a much stiffer feel to it, etc. Its decent but the 6-button’s D-pad is a welcome improvement. Same with buttons. They have a more pleasant, modern “spongy” feel to them.

The 3-button was(IS) like an 1980’s controller. While the 6-button is just made with more modern aspects in mind like ergonomics.

Yes it is definitely better, but the original wasn’t crap either. It was pretty decent and i still love its retro look. Not bad to break out on occasion.

Played a bunch of NES Sunsoft games when my internet went out. Batman: Return of the Joker is damn good despite a few flaws. If you can get over the fact that Batman is running around with a laser gun then you have yourself a fun Run n Gun. Graphics and music and controls are damn good. But the charge shot on all the weapons are worthless and starting at level 3 it gets extremely cheap and seems to predate IWBTG in terms of cheapness and memorization. But all the bosses are easy and there are simple passwords for every level. I am convinced that Sunsoft were working on an untitled Run n Gun title and decided to slap the Batman license on it but have yet to find any evidence.

Pro tip: pick the N gun and use auto-fire.

Other NES Sunsoft games:

Gremlins 2. Damn good despite some cheapness (especially the final level) but the controls, graphics and music are superb. Only problem is firing at an angle but otherwise if you fuck up it’s your own fault. Except that last level, that shit is evil. Only wish you could buy more then one item at the shop but otherwise damn good game and one of the few truly good licensed games.

Blaster Master. I’m sorry but the overhead levels suck. They’re monotonous and just not fun to play. The rest of the game is fine but come on, no passwords and no battery save?

Never played Fester’s Quest. Tempted to do so.

Non-Sunsoft.

Ultimate Stuntman. Imagine playing a “good” version of Action 52? It would be this game and for the most part it’s good, the controls and sprite work are surprisingly good. The problem is that you have 2 lives and no continues and the game throws you into new game modes (that each play entirely different) in every level and expects you to figure out what to do with limited lives, no continues, AND a time limit.

For something a little different: Castlevania hacks. There have been quite a few over the years and I never felt the need to play them but one day I watched this

And thought “Okay, there have to be at least a couple of good ones.” and tried more then a few out. And pretty much 99% of them are bad. Either the hack is just lazy or they just ramped up the difficulty. There’s three that I’ve played that for the most part radically changes things. They are Chorus of Mysteries, Castlevania Remix, and Overflow of Darkness. And unfortunately Chorus and Remix -while they change a lot of things- the changes are not for the better. The graphics range from being okay to significantly ugly and the new music in the case of Chorus made my ears bleed.

Then there’s Overflow of Darkness. The only one that has new graphics that look really good and it does not have new music which is not a big deal to me. However, the guy who made it made some HUGE changes to it that makes it feel like a brand new game. It is a very difficult game though but not quite at IWTBG or Battletoads level of difficulty.

Try it here: http://www.letsplaysnes.com/play-castlevania-overflow-darkness-online-nes/

And for some reason none of the rom sites have released the hack ready to go with the Castlevania rom and in order to use the hack you have to use the original Castlevania rom which is very difficult to find on rom sites. So here you go, the complete hack, no IPS, no rom hunting, no bs.

If you guys have the chance you should check out The Game Chasers. It’s a show that follows two texans hunting around for retro games. Good production quality, and hilarious at times.

Episode 8 from season 1

It’s set up too much like a reality show. I couldn’t finish one episode.

AVGN is one of my favorite show up in yt and even back when they weren’t in yt. So much nostalgia just watching James playing all those shitty games  .

Classic Game Room is worth watching if you don’t mind an obvious Genesis/Sega fanboy giving opinions. Still a good YT channel despite that.

road rash is where its at. punching post09ers while ridin :smokin:

Informative vid on the whole Universal Pictures (King Kong) vs Nintendo (Donkey Kong) lawsuit.

CGR has great videos. If you’re into Japanese stuff, lukemorse is another good follow.

still a better idea then a old man cyborg and a fucking kangaroo

Went without internet for yet another day and a half or so. Spent some time with the NES.

Vice: Project Doom. God damn man. This is the game Retro City Rampage tried to be (yes, I know it was originally supposed to be a NES GTA game but Vice is an obvious inspiration) and was overall better. Imagine a slightly easier Ninja Gaiden but you have a selection of ranged weapons you can use at any time and with a couple of Spy Hunter and Shooting Gallery levels and you have this game. Very fun, cut scenes on par with Ninja Gaiden, and great controls. An underrated NES masterpiece. Pro tip: the grenade is your friend during the boss battles.

Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti. It’s funny, I’m a HUGE fan of the Splatterhouse franchise and I played this one but I never took the time to beat it. And for the record I thought the remake/reboot was okay but I don’t like the Beat 'Em Up games of today and I HATE QTE’s. The cool thing about the Splatterhouse games is that every game in the franchise is good. There’s no “That one” that went in an entirely different direction and fucked up. This one is similar to the first two games but is scaled down for the NES but the graphics are easily among the very best on the NES and the controls are perfect. Ton of new levels and levels inspired by the first game and it’s fairly easy up until the last level. Really fun action/platformer worth checking out even if you’re not a Splatterhouse fan.
