Considering you’ve been talking about RE2 in the lounge thread, I thought you’d appreciate Revelations somewhat return to oldschool RE.
Revelations is solid+the dodge mechanic is fun. I don’t think the game is amazing or anything, but it’s good. I should finish it soon, I’m practically at the end of it.
Capcom suits: what?! The game who’s advertising budget amounts to a single 8x10 coffee stained screenshot posted on the fence of an abandoned building didn’t sell?! Our fans are so ungrateful!
Revelations is solid. Very atmospheric, dodge mechanic is boss, cool enemy designs, actual level design unlike RE5/6’s straight lines(although Revelations does have a few levels that are literally straight lines.)
It’s supposed to be a return to oldschool RE with more modern mechanics and it kind of feels that way. It’s like a 7/10, imo.
except its NOT “old school” at all. far from those games. here I am just gonna quote this post from another forum. exactly I feel about the game.
"PREVIOUSLY ON RESIDENT EVIL REVELATIONS…A BUNCH OF SHIT HAPPENED THAT DOESN’T MATTER.
This game fucking sucks. The worst story, supporting characters, writing and enemy variety since RE1…however Revelations was made in 2012 on a stronger platform and much later in the series, so unlike RE1 it has no excuse for being this crappy.
I still need to make a GameFAQs topic about this. Ask me anything you want because I’ve finished it hoping for things to get better but they never did, then it ended. There are good parts, but many more terrible ones. And what kind of fucking Resident Evil game doesn’t even have a run button?
It’s a game loved by customization & point fags (that’s why people like Raid Mode so much) and tacked-on fanservice, just like Peace Walker."
It is oldschool in some ways. You actually need to explore, there are real puzzles to solve, there’s backtracking ALA RE1-3, etc. etc. Yeah it’s also modern in design, but I like what they did with this game. 7.5/10, giving a .5 score bump 'cause I have fond memories of playing it. Will stream the last few chapters some point in the future.
Backtracking can be good if done right. If I’m re-visiting an area and it’s completely changed+there’s new enemies/wacky enemy placement, that can be a good thing.
I wasn’t stating backtracking as a positive but more as it being a throwback to oldschool RE.
Backtracking in a Metroidvania style game is a perfect example of it being done well imo. Re-visiting the same area with a new skill that lets me access different parts of that area with a new skill=fine with me.
RE4 had it right…You backtracked into the village a few times but from different routes and as such the enemy layout and next route/destination was a new one keeping it familiar and fresh. RE4 was just too good! I could play that game anytime.
Metroid Prime was also a good game that made you revisit old areas but with new routes/new enemies keeping things fun but challenging.
I dislike having to return to old areas after a long stretch. I’ve gone through all this shit in the garden house just so I can gain a key to open the last three locked doors in the mansion. That shit was annoying.
