I have no idea if the recorder was on.

Some critique from last night:

  • Darrikson, I think the biggest change you can make to your game right now is your risk / reward set-ups. Getting an instant overhead fierce while jumping towards someone is a great round ENDER, but not really great during the round, as I recover faster than you, and can punish hard. Also, the EX wall-lunge move is not a good idea 99% of the time. Sure, you’ll hit people with it, but in a tournament match, I think it’s small things like that which will add up and get you killed quick. Other than that, you have a nice speed to your gameplay which is good. You’ll be a monster in SSF4 with Vega’s buffs!

  • Jose, I don’t really have too much advice to give you, because you’re pretty solid. However, just try to stay 100% focused when you play. Sometimes you get a little loose and throw out a risky attack, or you let someone who is overly defensive break your momentum. Just focus on how to put the opponent in a situation where you can get them to do what you want. If I’m being overly defensive, you should either bait me, do overheads, or throw me. If you saw, I ate like 4 overheads, because I didn’t care. I just wanted to wait for the right moment I could react to, and punish hard. So, you should’ve baited my EX Messiah and punished, and got the momentum back. I’m not sure how that match-up plays for Fei Long, but you’re still a strong player.

  • Martin, you were off your game last night. I don’t think you’re used to an arcade style set-up, where every game is super important just yet. I know you’re fresh from your win in Washington, and I’m proud of you. But now, let’s take it to the next level, so you can win a big Cali tournament.

  • Chris, I didn’t really play you / watch you enough to give good critique. Sorry…

  • Danny, you did super good last night. But remember what I told you before; if you’re going to poke people to death, you should switch characters. A lot of your damage comes from just sitting back and punishing. But honestly, Zangief is all about being in your face and making you fear the SPD. I would recommend working on your offense more. I also know you were in Vegas this last week, so I’m not too worried about it. And PM me your phone number.

For everyone else, remind me if we played, and I’ll try to write up information for you on how you did, or where you can improve.

Oh, and what the fuck is with these poverty money matches? What is next, food stamp matches? Lint I found on the ground matches? I’ll seriously detonate a nuclear bomb on the next individual who does a poverty money match. $5 and UP, PLEASE. Make it at least the slightest bit hype!

Haha okay thanks Koogy. I tend to just like to get the first chip of damage and hang back and play with the patience of my opponents, and make them approach Zangief which puts them at an immediate disadvantage. But I guess for those times that I end up having to approach and get in is when I have the most trouble. (One of the reasons Sagat is so hard for me, because there is no way I can force him to approach me.)

Oh yeah Koogy, could you post a critique of Eric?

Also, Cameron says he will bring you your cable asap, Koogy.

Here’s some of my critiques from last night as well:

Raius - I think one of the biggest holes in your game is that you need to watch jump-ins. Sometimes you get too caught up in the ground game (which you’re quite decent at by the way). I ended up getting a lot of free jump-in’s against you. You should be able to react with a light shoryuken. Even if that trades, you will end up being in the favor because you can usually EX fireball or super or ultra me after trading. Also, something that would help you a lot is throwing jab fakes into your fireball game. The reason I was able to react to your fireballs so well is that I can just watch your character, and when I see a certain movement then I just EX Greenhand into you. If you throw jab fakes when I expect you to fireball, then that makes me have to second guess myself. Now, instead of watching just for movement, I have to watch for a hint of blue on the screen, confirming that there is in fact a fireball on the screen. I can still react to this, but it makes it a lot harder for me. A reaction to any visual sight for me takes about 200 to 220 milliseconds (About 12-13 frames). When I have to confirm the sight, it takes me about 300+ milliseconds. (About 18+ frames). When you fake me out and confuse me, you effectively buy yourself an extra 6 frames on every one of your moves, and you’ll then also be able to get away with more medium normals.

Darrikson - In general your footsies weren’t bad. You have a play-style that is in general hard for me to predict when you are zoning in and out. However, you should keep your unpredictability throughout your whole game. When you knocked me down, you would usually jump away claw. When you got knocked down, you would either jump away or back flip away sometimes. When you knock someone down, you want to keep them down and jumping away claw won’t score a knockdown. Remember your options when someone wakes up. You can grab (beats wake up lariat, and results in a knockdown), low-hit into combo (or even just roundhouse) (beats jump away, and combos will usually result in a knockdown). You can cross them up (doesn’t really work against Zangief because he can just mash on lariat). You might expect them to do something (like Wake-up grab from Zangief), so you can walk out of range, and then come back in with a big combo. Keeping people down is how you keep your opponent guessing and how you take out big chunks of damage.
In the same way, when I knock you down, I know that you will want to jump away or back flip. Standing by you and lariating will beat both of those options, and results in you being knocked down again. Know your wake-up options (jump away, back dash, backflip away, EX-anti air, block/do nothing) and try to get a read on your opponents based on their patterns.

I’ll hold off a while on critiquing everyone else because I wasn’t really watching anyone else very closely, and if I was it was harder to find flaws.

Wow, great critique ffoxxttrott! The consensus over the course of the night was that at this point in my evolution, I’ve gone from being too aggressive to being far too cautious with my shoryukens and late on my normal anti-airs, for exactly the reason you mentioned: way too caught up in fine tuning my ground game right now. I need to learn to play with hype around too, as it doesn’t take much to kinda fluster me, which I hate admitting, but it’s true. The mixing it up with jab fakes and such to get less predictable is a big help too. I’ll do my best to take everyone’s advice to heart become a player who can at least give you higher ups something to think about.

I think I lose focus way too easily.

Someone hook me up with some adderall.
