Wow, great turn out! I think I counted 14 people! Guys, this is what we need to keep doing. I’m going to continue to try and host these events as much as possible.
I think I’ve figured out a good way to organize it a bit better, but trust me, next time will be 100x more hardcore! So, work on your game and bring it next Wednesday! I think having only two set-ups would be best to help level every one up, because you’d have to play 100% serious. However, I worry about the players who are just starting… what do you guys recommend?
If you lurk on SRK, PLEASE get an account and post up! I want everyone to post and be active!
Thanks very much for hosting! And everyone who brought food! I like the idea of the two “serious” set-ups, with maybe a few others for beginners/casual/other games (cough-3rd Strike-cough). I will try to bring a more complete set up next week.
I think 3 tvs is perfect. One tv being used for people who are still learning. The other for practicing set ups/combos. And the last tv for our better players.
Also I do like scamps idea to have the beginners to be in some type of tourny to get out of the level they are in. Perhaps we can supervise one person and give advice while they play. Idk just a thought. Also if I was supervising one of you guys, sorry ahead of time but im kinda of a drill sergent. Haha. ;D
One more thing that was brought up. If you know anyone who doesn’t have an account please tell them to make one. It would help alot for our next get together.
No no Jose…your not a drill sergent unless your talking about how you take it…your a dick when it comes to teaching. But hey thats your style, I play not like other giefs I play high risk high reward, all my characters do. I wouldn’t mind supervising someone, but be sure you have your technical stuff down first, because without that the lessons that come after are what I’m all about.
I don’t like the TV Idea, separating players…no I don’t like it.
I’ve taught my friend how to get better. I don’t even play the character he plays and it works on how I do it.
Teaching doesn’t have to be one way dude. You do your thing and that’s fine I won’t criticize you
You with your ‘high risk high reward’ is more like high risk low reward. You let my third/forth character beat you. Come on dude I know your better than that.
If you don’t like the tv idea that’s fine. That’s why we are posting to see what other peoples opinion are on this matter. I see left you see right and that’s fine, again just talking here
Wooo, fighting words. This is Lee, btw. I am up for whenever there is a Street Fighter day/night (outside of work). I would be happy to host some at my apartment, when
I get my new TV I will send out invites. I like to play during the weekends. I work Mon-Fri 8-5, so anytime not during work and not super late, unless it is
Friday or Saturday (those days I can go till 5-6 in the morning (^_^) On teaching, I don’t mind how we do it either way because practice is important and
learning from multiple people is always good. I wouldn’t mind holding a weekly thing at my place actually.
I am contemplating making like a mini tourney hosted by me every other month or so. No entrance fee: I will supply the winner with a $30 prize.
People bring food so we can have a good time. No entry fee makes it so everyone can play and get better, it is a small prize, but I think it could be fun.
Having small tournaments is a good idea, but maybe you can make it $1-2 entry or something. That way people fight harder because something came out of their own pockets.
Also, putting up $30 out of your own pocket would be a cool bonus, but then people come to expect it from you and it also becomes draining after a little while.
My original idea for game night was to recreate an arcade environment. Basically, people put a “marker” or coin down, and it marks their place in line. The winner stays, the losers step off the machine and let the next person on. This would create a cut-throat environment, where every hit is extremely important. However, the issue I have is that it leaves lots of idling time, where people aren’t actually practicing and getting better. And that’s what it is all about, right? There are other issues as well.
For every set-up you have, you split the player base. So, it might be that “TV A” has myself, Jose, Chef Borjan, and Scamp all playing on it. Well, we don’t really rotate around to the other set-ups. So, how do we get better / get experience against everyone?
The skill level difference is noticeable, due to some players having been around for a long time, and some players being relatively new.
I would love to have the lights lowered, music thumping, 2 set-ups like an arcade going and a huge crowd of people gathered around it, with all the hype that is generated by good matches. However, I’m not sure if it is the best concept for the gatherings. I would like your guys opinion on this.
As far as ranbats are concerned, I need to see the different options. I’m 100% for having tournaments with cash money, but players should pay their own way into the event. That way, they have something on the line if they lose.
I think we should have some noise while having the matches, this is not like golf right where you gotta be quiet when someone is playing on the field. Also it will keep newer players interested & make them wanna level their game up or at least how it was for me when I was younger. On the plus side I don’t see how this could be a negative thing having noise while playing some intense matches, I think it could bring the community together. Oh yeah I got a new job so I’m pretty much only availabe on friday afternoons and all night plus saturday & sunday afternoons. =( I was looking forward to helping out the community out. Also on small tournaments I think it’s a good idea to have like a dollar or two to enter but, don’t make it up $5 because of todays economy & all but, it’s totally up to you since it was your idea.
I would be happy to give pointers to anyone who will take them and seriously consider it. I tend to be a better teacher than a player anyway.
Noise is one thing. Hype is another. It’s a good idea to practice with a lot of noise and hype if you can, because that’s what a tourney is going to be like once you get past the first stages. And even if you’re in the first stages you might go up against the local hero and you can bet that crowd will distract you if you let it.
And all talk is good. The only bad thing is if someone takes it too personally and gets upset. You gotta call people out on what they need to improve on, and make fun of them if they never learn. You gotta work each other up so that they’ll work.
Jose and Martin need to bust out a money match. Also Rufus can’t beat Blanka. I barely even have to try.
Paul, I was just thinking of some kind of marker system myself at work today. I was thinking maybe if each person had a unique marker they could put there marker up on several different setups and whatever place became avaible first they could jump in there and then move there marker at the other station to the end of the line. If they were to be up at a station and were currently occupied on another station just skip them back to the end of the line again.
This would take some communication between people and would probably work best if people just put markers on 2 stations at once. This could work well if you were waiting for a station with like 6-7 people (the main couch station) and at the same time you could have a marker up at a station with maybe only 3-4 people so you could get in there while you wait and if you start owning there, when you come up at the other station they would pass you up and then other players from the big station would eventually cycle back through the lower stations. Just an idea not sure how it would work and you’d have a lot of people yelling “blue you’re up” or “number 420 where the heck you at?” so with music and the social scene that probably wouldn’t fly. Well just a thought I guess.
Other than that I thought it was fun but I didn’t play some people I wanted too like Martin, Eric, Jose, Scamp at SF4 but I got in this rotation with Chef Borjan and man he was doing good I really wanted to beat him and was getting zoned out a lot by Chun li and then I think Jose was doing well on the couch station too. I met some new people and that was cool to
I’m actually more for integrating newer players right into the mix with the better players. This game isn’t rocket science and imho they would learn way quicker than just playing with the same handful of new players. They would get exposed to the better game play way quicker.
And one more thing I have my yellow and green sf4 headbands and 1 wristband left from that old gamecrazy tourney and would like to put those up for belts. Like people would get these items and then have to defend them from challengers or something. So you might play harder to hold on to your items and if you were really good you could collect multiple items. But I would ask that whoever has the items at the end of the night hold on to them and show up next to defend them or something like that.
If any of you guys could think of some other incentives or rotation systems for players to get to each other and play more serious that would be cool, I just know time I really wanna play the people who were beating me like Chef Borjan and then beat some people down like Martin and Jose who try to take me out a lot. Especially Jose’s Fei which last time we played you remember those Ultra finisher rounds with Guile don’t you.
I actually like the ideas you are going with psychoballz. I do believe that in order for newer players to understand their weaknesses they have to play top players in order for them to get better and make them practice more. Also I don’t think seperating top players from newer ones will be good for the community because we all want to level up our game instead of being stuck where we all are currently. Also I do think we should have some kind of item to determined a local champion which is a great idea btw. I have a plastic championship belt which I’ll be willing to donate to the champion if it doesn’t sound silly to you guys to determine who’s #1.
